New Model: Atlantis 58

Atlantis presented in Cannes its new flagship the 58 which makes itself the biggest model of the range ever built by the Piacenza, Italy based builder.  Before to this the biggest Atlantis build was the Stefano Righini designed 55 which started production in 2004, and was stopped in 2009. The 58 model which measures over 61 feet takes also place of the 54 as the biggest model of the current Altantis line up, and follows the new lines as started last year by NeoDesign of Salvetti and Biaggi with the 48.  The 58 also continues the We Are Open Atlantis philosophy for a very fresh exterior aft deck, although since then the builder part of the Azimut Benetti Group is also now showing rendering for an option of a four part patio door dividing the cockpit area.  The lower cabin plan apart having a C-shaped saloon, and galley in standard form offers three double cabins, with a full beam owners suite.  But the option exists here too for a replacement to the third cabin, with an office, or a gym.  Very original idea and rare to find for an open sport yacht of this dimensions I must add.  Power options are twin MAN engines of considerable power for the size of the Altantis 58 with standard being twin MAN 1000 or optional 1200hp.  Hull one which is powered by the bigger option has since its maiden voyage in early September from Savona to Cannes, and Genoa done recently a long trip up to Turkey which in its first sea trials delivered three extra digits to the predicted top speed of 38 knots.

Improve-it = Cabo 36 Express

Launched in 2009, Cabo 36 Express comes into the 2011 season with a new engine propulsion set up featuring ZF famous pod drives unit.  This will result in the 36 Express having easier marina handling, better mileage to the liter, and also better performance.  Power for the new set up will be from twin Cat engines delivering 460hp each.  So far the Cabo design team did renovate or modify the interior and cockpit plans with this new engine propulsion set up.  That means that the lower deck is still the same layout plan sleeping five in a three berths plus two coming from the convertible C-shaped saloon.  The 36 Express is the second Cabo to receive the pod treatment after a standard shaft propulsion set up, having the US builder also added this option on the 40 Express.

NAJAD AQUIRED
A consortium consisting of the boat manufacturer Nord West and Orust Yacht Service has acquired Najadvarvet, which went into liquidation on 9 August. The acquisition applies to the entire operation in Henån on the Swedish island of Orust, with production, winter storage and service. During the last fiscal year, Najadvarvet produced 25 high-quality sailing yachts and also had a significant level of service activity at the facilities in Henån on Orust. North West operates on nearby Vindön and last year they manufactured 37 high-quality motor boats.  Nord West foresees significant synergies resulting from the merger. The companies have the same industrial base and have grown out of the craftsmanship and maritime expertise established in Orust over generations.  Benny Martinsson founder and owner of Nord West said he is very pleased of this acquisition, and also advised he intends to continued the expansion of Najad line of sail boats from 35 to 57 feet.  Najad’s harbour facility has been managed by Claes Samuelsson for many years and he will now work with entrepreneur Bertil Karlsson to make an even greater effort in the areas of winter storage, servicing and insurance repairs in Henån in order to meet customers wishes for a comprehensive solution for boat users. Najadvarvet was founded in 1971 and has manufactured over 2,000 yachts. The company became bankrupt after a vigorous expansion in 2005-07, during which the company’s product development, investments and sales doubled. After the peak year of 2007, when sales exceeded SEK 300 million, the company was hit by the financial crisis in 2008, when sales fell sharply. Despite significant capacity reductions, the company was forced to file for bankruptcy in early August 2011.  The new owners wish to sincerely thank the lawyer Jan Save from the law firm Hammer, lawyer Lars Zetterberg and his colleagues at the consultancy Ackordscentralen and also Najadvarvet’s previous owner, Animatrix Capital, for their professional work to close the deal, thereby safeguarding Najad’s long-term future and the possibility of regain its position as one of the world’s leading yacht manufacturers along with Nord West.  Nord West was founded in 1985 by Benny Martinsson and has 130 employees. Sales last year amounted to about SEK 360 million. The company is family owned and consists of boat building and maintenance at Vindön/Orust, as well as a facility in Lysekil for hull construction and plastic fittings. Today the boatyard is one of the most modern in Sweden and sells boats around the world.  According to Claes, the work of winter storage has already started and, if you have not yet decided where to service your boat this winter, both motor boats and yachts are welcome at Orust Yacht Service. Benny explains that new boat production will begin shortly, and the team looks forward to re-launching Najad at the autumn boat shows in Hamburg and Stockholm.

New Model: Unica 50

It's been a long time coming for the Naples, Italian based builder Unica to presents its second model the 50, and now finally in 2011 it has arrived.  The new big Unica, just as the smaller 42 is a design of the famous Brunello Acampora's Victory studio who for the 50 presented a hull of open boat inspiration but without forgetting pure cruiser roots both inside and outside.  The Unica 50 surprises for many aspects of its construction, from the spaces above and below decks, and a high technological Kevlar construction.  The standard interior plan offers a three cabins layout, with an owners suite to fore, C-shaped saloon, L-shaped galley, and a second guest head.  An important is that the interior can all but be personalized as it features no structural moulds, meaning that in the construction process the Unica team have quite a big liberty to modify the layout of same.  Power for the Unica 50 comes from standard Volvo 435hp in IPS pods which give a 36 knots max speed, and 30 knots not only thanks to the efficiency of the propulsion, but also the high tech construction which weighs the Unica at just fourteen tons with these engines.  Alternative is for a high performance twin MAN 800hp engines, with the Award winning Flexidrive surface drives being available.

Project: Estensi 360 Goldstar S

Following the launch of its new flagship the 640 Maine, Estensi shipyard from Italy returns to concentrate on its traditional down east looking Goldstar line, and presents the project for the 360 S.  This model will be the entry level of the Goldstar Sport line which will now feature five cruisers and yachts from 36 up to 54 feet, and is planned for launch in the coming Spring of 2012.  The Sport line represents a more modern take on the lobster boat looks with designer Zuccheri presenting a sloop stern, and sleeker upper structure pilothouse.  Contrary to what one would believe the 360 Goldstar S will also feature a different hull to what the Classic version offers, with a wider beam by ten centimeters, and longer waterline length.  Her interior will offer a lower accommodation deck with a two double cabins plan, and L-shaped galley.  The main deck saloon will offer the living daily relaxing area with a C-shaped saloon, opposite entertainment unit, and the helm station to starboard.  Power to the Vee shaped planning hull will be from standard FPT engines 270hp or optional 380 in traditional line shaft propulsion.
