War in Ukraine

It seems the second decade of this millennium cannot be to peace with itself, and after a two year war with an invisible enemy, the Covid-19 Virus and its various variants, here we are in the largest conflict in European land since World War Two.

The economies of war are complicated and this time they come in a period already struggling with uncontrolled inflation, and supply disruptions as affected by Covid-19.  The boating market and the super yacht market are coming into this strong, with demand surpassing supply as it has never been seen.

Still we have to wait what happens to this demand, with Russians today making an important part of the market of yachts above fifteen meters in size, as they do for super yacht above eighty feet.  Some builders are exposed to Russia more then others, and with all these sanctions being imposed and getting worse I cannot see how builders can really complete a sale with a Russian in the near future.

It is difficult and strange times, and from a certain point of view beside the technology we have in our hands this war will slow down globalization and take back the World to the Cold War times.  Even if the War in Ukraine finished today, the aftermath and supply disruptions and the division on the global stage will be felt for years to come and possibly even decades.

It is a global reset of things, but very different from to that we ever imagine, as it is one which takes us back to the past.

Nordhavn owners and non-owners alike are eligible to participate in the event, which aims to showcase the video talents of all who have a passion for showcasing Nordhavns on film.  “We couldn’t have been more thrilled with the level of quality and enthusiasm behind each of the videos from the first Nordhavn Film Festival,” said Nordhavn’s vice president Jim Leishman. “I suspect the creativity and effort that go into the video submissions for the next film fest will match or even surpass what we saw in 2019.”

Nordhavn Announces Partnership in Cubar 2022 Event

The legacy of Nordhavn lies within the extended cruising adventures that are the hallmark of the company’s purpose-built power yachts and their intrepid owners. It is tied to the brand’s many en masse voyages including the Great Siberian Sushi Run and perhaps most notable, the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally, an 18-boat trans-oceanic group crossing. In the spirit of this tradition, Nordhavn is pleased to announce its collaboration with the San Diego Yacht Club on the 2022 Cubar Odyssey, a multi-motoryacht cruise of the Baja Peninsula happening October 30 through November 13. Nordhavn will be the key sponsor of this year’s Cubar event, partnering with SDYC on kick-off festivities and event promotions. The Cubar Odyssey is a bi-annual power boat rally that emphasizes camaraderie, organized excursions and safety in numbers. An acronym for Cruise Underway to Baja Rally, Cubar boats follow a course from San Diego to La Paz, Mexico, with stops at some of Baja’s beloved coastal spots along the way. Originally conceived in 2007 under the name Fubar, the current iteration has been produced and hosted by SDYC since 2015. Participation in Cubar is limited to powerboats with a minimum range of 450 nm and has consistently been a big draw for Nordhavns. This year, the brand is represented by eight of 50 participating boats. “We are very excited to partner with SDYC on the 2022 CUBAR,” said Nordhavn vice-president Jim Leishman. “It has the essence of a Nordhavn event and aligns with our mission to promote safe, enjoyable cruising. It’s the perfect vehicle for anyone looking to baby-step their way into grand adventure.” Leishman knows from experience, having personally participated in the original Fubar back in 2007 aboard a client’s Nordhavn 55. There are three warmup events happening throughout the year, culminating with a kick-off dinner at Nordhavn headquarters in Dana Point two weeks prior to departure.

Pearl Healthy Order Book

Pearl has established a reputation as the Atelier of Yachting, offering clients an exclusive experience and personal attention. The shipyard’s commitment has been tested by growing demand in the market boom. As of now, 20 units of the new Pearl 62 have been sold along with six units of the new Pearl 72 ahead of its launch, scheduled for the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.  On the topic, Managing Director Iain Smallridge remarked, “Last year wasn’t without its challenges. One might think Pearl is just riding the wave of renewed interest in yachting, but it’s really been a balancing act. We wanted to take maximum advantage of the momentum, without letting that wave wash away what makes our brand unique. That’s why we’ve channeled the success of this year to improve all aspects of our business. Expanding the network and bringing in new talent is paramount, especially as we prepare to launch several new models over the next three years. As with the Pearl 62 and the 72, each design is going to bring something new to the market. We can barely wait to share them with our clients, stakeholders and friends.”

Mr Lloyd is personally invested in R Marine Perth with a clear vision for the future of the dealership.  Mr Lloyd and the R Marine Perth team hosted the first event of 2022 for the dealership, a raft-up on the Swan River with the city skyline as the backdrop.  The raft-up at Matilda Bay comprised 33 motor yachts ranging from classic Rivieras to the latest models up to 60-foot, as owners took advantage of a fabulous summer’s day. It was the first on-water event hosted by R Marine Perth in almost two years.  The R Marine Perth event was enjoyed by 400 Riviera owners, their families and friends, some of whom were on their first ever raft-up experience.  Attending her first Riviera event on her 6000 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition, Argyle, was Paula Harry who appreciated the raft-up being held on a Friday while the children were at school. Paula and her husband Adam often spend weekends with their children on their yacht on the Swan River or offshore at Rottnest Island.  A musical trio and a roving saxophonist added to the day’s celebrations, while one motor yacht provided a slippery dip for all to enjoy.  Aaron McNally, owner of Riviera 51 Flybridge, Longshot, enjoyed being on the water again with the Riviera family.  It was such a great day that Aaron didn’t leave until 11pm that night, well after the last of the motor yachts headed home.  New Riviera owner Aidan Jenkins, aboard his 4800 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition, Ocean’s 8, spent the afternoon entertaining four couples aboard.  Aidan describes his 4800 Sport Yacht as perfect for his family’s style of boating in Perth.  Stephen Marley’s 5400 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition, Nangeenan, is his third Riviera motor yacht and the raft-up is one event he says owners look forward to each year.  The R Marine Perth team is looking forward to hosting future events for motor yacht owners, taking advantage of prime boating conditions in Perth throughout the year.  Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst congratulated the R Marine Perth team for a magnificent raft-up.

Viking Lightning Protection

The Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics (AME) has become the exclusive marine distributor in the United States, Mexico and Costa Rica of a comprehensive system that helps protect boats against the devastating effects of lightning strikes. “As ship systems become more sophisticated and interconnected, lightning strikes are having a greater impact,” said AME General Manager Todd Tally. “We believe we have found a system that will be a game-changer in our industry.”  AME has partnered with Dinnteco International – a family business based in Spain with more than two decades of experience in lightning protection  to offer its DDCE (Electromagnetic Charge Compensation Device) lightning protection technology. AME made the announcement at the Palm Beach International Boat Show last week.  Dinnteco DDCE innovative lightning suppressor protects structures from lightning strikes by slowly and continuously neutralizing electric charges. “The device is constantly collecting the ions from the atmosphere and bringing them to ground while avoiding the creation of an ‘upward leader,’ which would result in a lightning strike,” said Todd.  For sportfish yacht applications, the DDCE will be mounted on a custom carbon fiber pole on top of the tuna tower.  A second lightning suppressor called the Dineol will be necessary on yachts with outriggers. Both the DDCE and the Dineol guard against direct lightning strikes. A third element, a Dinfil, protects the boat against indirect strikes. “Most of your larger yachts will have two Dinfils, which will be connected to the grounding system of the boat,” said Tally.  AME spent over a year researching the topic of lightning protection and has the utmost confidence in the Dinnteco technology. The next Viking demonstrator boat, an 80 Convertible, will be outfitted with the system. In addition, owners of a 68 and a 72 on the Viking production line have requested the DDCE package for their vessels due to lightning incidents with their previous boats.  AME will be installing the system on new Vikings in its role as master dealer, but “we’re also interested in facilitating relationships with other companies so they can become dealers,” said Todd. “For instance, we have already partnered with ComMar Sales, LLC marine manufacturers’ representatives.”

Viking Veteran Retired

After a 26-year stint, Keith Cranmer retired from the Viking Yacht Company as Warehouse Foreman. “Keith is the hardest worker I know,” said Pat Klevinsky, Warehouse Department Manager. “Thank you for all you've done for Viking. We admire your dedication and energy to this department and everything you do.” After Keith purges all the part numbers from his head, he's looking forward to spending time with his family – especially his grandchildren.

Improve-it = Cheoy Lee CLB88

Cheoy Lee presents an improved CLB88, the 27 meter super yacht flagship of the B seriies and designed by world-renowned Milan-based Jozeph Forakis. The CLB88 has already won a Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. What’s more, it was also a finalist for Boat International’s Design and Innovation Awards in 2021. A deeper colour scheme characterises the first interior package. The palette, which features teak and walnut, gives the interior a real sense of gravitas and masculinity. However, Cheoy Lee realised that some may prefer a lighter touch and Forakis envisioned a second palette made up of soft greys and fair oaks. Such a palette plays well with the natural light welcomed on board through CLB88’s expansive windows. The overall effect is an inviting, bright and modern feeling, like the faint recall of a summer beach holiday. Forakis is also excited about other new developments on the super yacht. Think integrated carpeting in the after section of the salon and an abundant use of Corian. Fenix, a new matte laminate that utilises high tech nanotechnology, will also feature.
