Boat Review: Cabo 52 Express

Presentation
Launched in 2005 the Cabo 52 Express represents the US, California, Adelanto builder way of keeping up with clients who always request a bigger Sportfish Yacht, having at the time upgraded from the 45 Express. Designed by Cabo with Michael Peters, the 52 Express is still as at today the bigger sized boat from the 1991 founded company, sharing its flagship status with the 52 Flybridge launched earlier on this year. Further on, the last fall of 2008 the 52 Express has also been upgraded with a new three cabin layout, putting this open express Sportfish Yacht a tad above its competitors, along with the fittings which have a fame from the many of being a benchmark in the current production boat building offer. The 52 Express makes also its job of a big game sportfish yacht to perfection offering plenty of space on the aft deck, forty knots performance with excellent sea keeping qualities, and a spacious well laid below decks for long days fishing or cruising.
Accommodation
Welcoming you onboard in its huge aft cockpit, all free spaced for the fisherman minus the fighting chair in the middle. Here it is full with fishing amenities finding a bait prep center with covering lid, a rigging board, ice box with refrigeration plates, voluminous tackle storage, and a fifty gallon circulating bait tank with a large drain molded into the transom. Move more forward to this and the comforts for the guests start to appear in the form of an L-shaped settee to port, and a wet bar opposite. The helm station is located centrally for optimum visibility in every part with its central adjustable Stidd seat, and two further companionway seats. Command station console has plenty of room for a complete array of modern marine systems, engine electronic controls, color digital read outs, plus an array of custom switch panels with warning lights, and Palm Beach pod mounted single lever electronic controls for responsive easy maneuverability.
On the central starboard side is the entrance to the lower cabin deck available in three different versions. The first two are very similar minus the fore cabin, welcoming you with an l-shaped saloon settee to port, spacious l-shaped galley opposite, and day head to starboard just by the stairway. Cabins on the standard version are an en-suited owners stateroom with a central queen sized berth, and a twin bunk to port. The other version distinguishes itself for being what I call a buddies boat having the owner stateroom to fore replaced with three single berths in a vee shape. The new third cabin version changes most of the layout below from the standard version, offering a C-shaped galley, and L-shaped saloon all to starboard. To port side is the three cabins, starting with a double berth, guests shower head, and the double bunk cabin. To fore is the master en-suite with central double queen sized berth which does not loose much in size from the actual two cabin version accept in its en-suite head, which is slightly smaller.
For the technical heads this is a real dream boat, offering an engine room with its entrance on the main deck just behind the fighting chair, featuring an impressive seven feet of height, all ultra labelled systems from electrics to hydraulics, and machinery to make many engineering rooms look empty. Performance
Cabo entrusted the underwater sections to renowned hull designer Michael Peters, who offered a modified vee with a deep entry forward, and a medium sixteen degrees deadrise aft. The medium vee compromise is good to flat rough six foot seas going upwind, and give also a comfortable less rolling slow speed beam seas ride. Performance figures are actually impressive, thanks to the lighter weighted cored construction and very big MAN, MTU, and Cat engines. Standard engine is twin MAN V12 1360hp, with options going for MAN V12 1550hp, Cats C32 1570hp, and the bigger C32 1675hp. With Cats C32 1570hp the top speed is forty knots, and a 36 knots all time cruise. MAN V12 1550hp are very close to this being two knots shy away with a top speed of 38 knots. The MANs but do give a better 557 nautical miles range at twenty knots, versus the 452 miles of the Cats C32 1570hp.

Competition
Cabo did hit the competition when on the fall of last year it presented a three cabin optional version to its 52 Express. Most similar in terms of looks and concept is surely the Viking 52 Open, followed by the Carolina flared Buddy Davis 52 Express. Competitively priced with more economic to run smaller engines is the Riviera 48 Offshore Express. A similar sized custom build currently in construction is FandS Hull.15 54 which looks good, although if you can wait for minimum a year a handful of builders located on the East Coast would be glad to build you one. Competition criteria is for a sixteen metres open express Sportfish Yacht.

Conclusion
Cabo has been a welcome addition to the sportfish boat market since its inception in 1991. It started its path by launching a 35 Express, challenging the East Coast builders of Carolina and Florida back in those days. While the purist may have overlooked it at the time, Cabo did create what today has become a benchmark of quality being it a sportfish boat or not. This West Coast boat builder is also among the few sportfish builders who does not shy away from modernity, being one of the first of fully coring its boats, and so far according to the company the records did prove them right having no blister related complain in its eighteen year building history. The 52 Express stands at the top of Cabo's ladder being today its largest build, and it does represent a top choice in engineering, attention to detail, and superior accommodation layouts. High performance which can never miss in a Sportfish Yacht is also there offering speeds of thirty knots plus with the smaller engine choice, and over forty with the bigger options.

New Model: Jeanneau 8 Leader

Jeanneau continues the upgrade of its Leader line up presenting its second model in the range which will compromise three all new models for the 2010 season. The new 8 will be the smallest of the Leaders measuring a tad five centimetres short of nine metres. Designed by Garroni who his work with Jeanneau has been much appreciated in the Prestige line, here he follows the upmarket brand of the Beneteau Group, with similar exterior lines but also the interior echoes the prime yacht range. Inside the 8 Leader has a comfortable four berth interior, offering a comfortable vee shaped saloon which converts to a double, and a door separated mid ship double cabin. The lower deck also has a fully equipped galley, and a shower head. The cockpit outside is also well laid out offering a C-shaped settee, a sun pad to port, and a double seated helm station to starboard. Power is two choices from Volvo offering a single petrol engine 5.7GXI 320hp, or a diesel D4 option of 260hp.

Engine: John Deere HazLoc 6081AFH75 375hp

John Deere Power Systems is pleased to announce a new patented PowerTech HazLoc diesel engines. Built upon John Deere's proven 8.1L platform, the PowerTech HazLoc 6081HFH75 diesel engine received United States Coast Guard, Marine Safety Center certification for Class 1, Division 1 (Zone 1) Groups C & D hazardous locations. The PowerTech HazLoc electronically governed diesel engines are certified for use on board USCG–certified subchapter D & O vessels. As electronic engines have become more commonplace, engines installed in these marine applications are required to meet Class 1, Division 1 (Zone 1) weather-deck requirements for electronics as directed by the USCG in United States-flagged vessels where there is the possibility of an explosive atmosphere in normal operations. A Class 1, Division 1 (Zone 1) area is defined as being within a 3-meter (10-foot) radius of any source of gases that could create an explosive atmosphere, including tank vents, sounding tubes, valves and pumps. Any engine that operates in these conditions must meet these requirements. John Deere is the first diesel engine manufacturer to receive USCG MSC certification for Class 1 Division 1 (Zone 1) group C & D hazardous weather-deck locations, for electronically controlled engines. The new PowerTech 6081AFH75 also has 8.1L of displacement and offers up to 280kW or 375hp at 2400 rpm. It is a 6-cylinder, electronically controlled engine with an air-to-coolant aftercooler and a water-cooled exhaust for use in marine auxiliary applications.

Project: Arcoa 40 Fishing

A further project from Arcoa, adding to the already three presented this year. This project the 40 Fishing as the title says takes a different route for the French builder, presenting here a Sportfish Cruiser in medium sized forty feet package, versus the Traditional lobster look of most of its range. There is little details so far available, but what can be seen is that the 40 Fishing will have a tuna tower, and a further lower extended aft deck for game fishing. The shear line of the 40 Fishing takes a lot from the traditional lobster design of the other Arcoa models but in particular resembling the 39 and 44 Mystic, as does the coach roof of the pilot house. Scheduled launching for the 40 Fishing is for the fall of this year, so its just to wait a bit more to see the definite version and have also full details.

New Model: Azimut 38 Flybridge

Thanks to Clipper Marine, Azimut distributor for the UK and Balearics, who hosted the global launch of the new Azimut 38 Flybridge last Friday at the Southampton Boat Show 2009, we can bring the first online photo of this much waited model. The Azimut 38 has been designed by Stefano Righini who here presents similar ultra modern lines citing the 43 launched in 2004 but with greater sweeping windows. Planning, craftsmanship, decor and attention to detail inside has been taken care of by Carlo Galeazzi combining key attributes for a stunning motor cruiser which is the entry level in a fleet going up to 116 feet. The 38 sky light within the master cabin allows natural light to flood in, while the second cabin has panoramic water line windows providing spectacular sea views. Each of the two cabins has access to en-suites and wardrobe facilities. The main saloon has a large dining area incorporated into the layout as well as ample storage in the port side cupboards and a spacious galley equipped with fridge freezer and electric hob. The 38 Flybridge is fitted with a pair of Cummins QS5.9 355hp engines, which give an all time cruising speed of 26 knots, with a max of 32 knots. The newest model from the Italian brand has huge potential for strong sales integrating the innovative design seen in Azimut’s larger builds into a smaller more user friendly version which is sure to be a favourite with stylish motor yacht enthusiasts across the global boating fraternity.

Powerboat P1 - Sicily GP, SNAV OSG & Seagull Chaudron 2009 Champions


SNAV OSG and Seagull Chaudron were crowned Powerboat P1 World Champions for 2009 after Sunday’s sizzling season-finale at the Sicilian Grand Prix of the Sea in Siracusa. The race for Evolution and SuperSport gold went tantalisingly down to the wire with both class champions having to wait until round ten’s checkered flag to finally toast victory. Triumphant Evolution Class pilots Giancarlo Cangiano, Giovanni Carpitella and Hannes Bohinc have rarely been matched on the waters this season, winning exactly 50% of the races and claiming a podium finish in all but two in 2009. Heading to Siracusa needing to overhaul Racing Silverline’s 75-point lead, Messrs Cangiano and Carpitella backed up Saturday’s Sprint victory with second place during Sunday’s Endurance Race to finish runners-up in the overall Grand Prix of the Sea and consequently pip the British team at 2009’s final hurdle. One half of this year’s silver medalists, Jan Falkowski complimented OSG for their efforts, agreeing that the best team won overall.
Angelo Tedeschi cemented his place amongst the powerboat racing greats after scoring his third consecutive SuperSport Class World Championship title. The Italian, who has been part of Powerboat P1 since the first-ever race in Italy seven years ago, attributed their season’s success to the team’s consistency and diligent preparation. The Ukrainian Spirit’s victory was also a feather in the cap for Ilmor Engines, and the Chaudron 41 feet powerboat, who like Tedeschi, claimed their third successive championship.
Evolution Race 10
The Belgian 33 Furnibo boat took the chequered flag in the Endurance race at the Sicilian Grand Prix of the Sea, but it was 88 SNAV OSG who dramatically took the Powerboat P1 World Championship title in the final race of the season. Needing to merely complete the 76.59 nautical mile course as the team were already expected to claim an additional 50 points for reliability Giancarlo Cangiano and Giovanni Carpitella understandably drove a cautious race in order to protect their points haul. Pierre Colpin and Frank Hemelaer in their Fountain Furnibo hull took charge of the race from the start lap and proceeded to dominate matters for the entire 15 laps, recording a top-speed of 110.1mph in the process. Their maximum points total ensured Colpin and Hemelaer finished the season in third place in the overall standings following the untimely withdrawal on lap nine of the 77 Lucas Oil Outerlimits boat. Despite their approach, Cangiano and Carpitella were never in danger of relinquishing second place and ultimately the Championship. After another display of raw pace on the start lap, the Searex Racing Team's 66 Cranefields Wine boat saw them vie for the leadership of the race. Sigi Greve and Gino Passchier were passed on the second lap by 53 Metamarine and eventually forced to retire on the tenth lap owing to more technical difficulties. For Drew Langdon and Jan Falkowski, who had led the Championship since Istanbul in June, it was heartbreak as the race proved one too many as the 47 Silverline boat finished sixth. 10 Cigarette Smash Poker did not make the start line owing to engine problems. Cigarette also got penalised yesterday 200 plus 90 points for a breach in the power to weight ratio.
Supersport Race 10
A second place finish proved enough for Tedeschi and team-mates Aaron Ciantar and Viktor Shemchuk as the challenge of 38 Baia Attolini bravely faded at the final hurdle. Starting the Endurance contest 11 points clear of Stefano Acanfora, Roy Capasso and Renato Guidi, Seagull drove a risk-free race to ensure the title stays with Tedeschi and his team for at least another 12 months. It was 26 Team SW1 Capital who continued their sensational run of end-of-season form as Daniel Cramphorn and Kim Collins made it back-to-back double Grand Prix of the Sea victories. The British-born team led the 71.76 nautical mile race from the outset and were seldom threatened by their open-canopy rivals, a result which sees them move into third above non-starters 17 Spirit of Belgium. Baia Attolini finished the 14 lap race in third place despite incurring a one minute penalty for overspeeding while PowerPole sitters 44 Iko Casa ended the season with a hard-earned fourth place. 22 Big Sergio finished fifth and 28 Blue Shaft was forced to retire with an unspecified technical problem. The sun has set on Sicily and a landmark 2009 year for Powerboat P1.

Powerboat P1 - Sicily GP, Sprint Race Contenders Make It Closer


SNAV OSG closed the gap to just 35 points in the Evolution Class after a barn-storming win in Saturday’s Sicilian Grand Prix of the Sea Sprint Race which saw arch-rivals and fellow title contenders Silverline cross the finish line in a lowly sixth position. The result leaves the World Championship on a knife edge in the closed-canopy category which promises to deliver a dramatic climax to the Powerboat P1 World Championship 2009 season in Sunday’s Endurance Race. Cranefields Wine roared into an early lead on the opening lap reaching speeds in excess of 115mph but as in PowerPole, the Germans suffered engine problems and were forced out of the race early. From there, the sleek Outerlimits hull, piloted by Giancarlo Cangiano and Giovanni Carpitella, raced into the lead before powering home to claim victory in the penultimate race of 2009, keeping their hopes of a championship crown very much alive. Cigarette Smash Poker’s Luca Formilli Fendi and Matteo Nicolini retain a fighting chance of winning the World Championship title after finishing second ahead of Belgium’s finest, Furnibo. Marco Pennesi steered the returning Metamarine Pignolo into a respectable fourth, one place ahead of Lucas Oil, who were some way ahead of the Silverline British duo, Drew Langdon and Jan Falkowski. In the SuperSport Class the title will go down to the wire as Baia Attolini claimed second spot and are now only 11 points behind current leaders Seagull Chaudron who ended the race in fourth. Team SW1 Capital roared home to their third consecutive victory, marking a remarkable debut for team sponsor-come-navigator Simon Luhr. Italian entry Saho, were responsible for keeping the contenders to the SuperSport title apart by taking a third place finish, however, as a wild card entry they received no championship points and Seagull Chaudron were promoted to a third place finish ahead of the all-female crew of Ikocasa. Last over the finishing line were Federico Montanari and Alfredo Zanardo in Blue Shaft, with fellow Al & Al team Big Sergio and the Sprit of Belgium boys both failing to register any points as neither boat completed the race.

Projects: Sunseeker 80 Yacht, Sunseeker 88 Yacht

As advised in the preview of the two new Sunseeker Predators, the British builder will present two new models in its Yacht range too, one which is totally new and the other a further development of the 86. With this Sunseeker makes it a total of five new models at Southampton, a record new boat showing for a single boat show. The Sunseeker 80 Yacht project will enjoy the same attention and scope for personalisation currently experienced on all the models in this range. This new model will be the latest model to join the Yacht line, and will also be Sunseeker answer to owners wanting a Super Yacht status boat of just eighty feet which is possible to operate by owner with minimum crew. Below deck arrangements are for two layouts, offering three full beam double suites, or a two double guest cabins and two twin guest cabins arrangement. Crew accommodation is situated aft. Speed for the 80 Yacht are of an estimated 25 knots cruise which give a range of around 350 nautical miles, and a wide open throttle speed of 30 knots. The lower interior wheelhouse located on the main deck provides large yacht facilities including a fully integrated monitoring system. The 80 Yacht will also catch attention for its large flybridge providing separate helm position, ample seating sunbathing space, and is available with an optional hardtop featuring the opening sunroof. At the stern, a large up and low bathing platform provides space to carry a tender or jet ski. The Sunseeker 88 Yacht, is not a completely new model being a further development to the highly successful 86 Yacht offering enlarged crew quarters aft, and an alternative guest cabin layout. The new 88 Yacht will have a 23 knots cruising speed, which give a range of 350 nautical miles, and a top speed of 30 knots.

Powerboat P1 - Sicily GP Power Pole Furnibo & Iko Casa Fastest


The Powerboat P1 world title contenders did little to ease tension ahead of tomorrow’s Sprint Race as Seagull Chaudron and Baia Attolini were pipped to the post in the SuperSport Class PowerPole by the ladies from Ikocasa.
In waves estimated to be in excess of six feet, Scandinavian Grand Prix of the Sea Endurance Race winners, Furnibo, topped the bill in the Evolution Class qualifier as World Championship hopeful’s SNAV OSG suffered a cracked hull in practice. Current championship leaders Silverline lost power on their final practice lap and as a result neither team was able take to the waters for the critical qualifying session.
All-female outfit Ikocasa put the recent disappointments in Italy and Sweden behind them to claim top spot, coming home by over five seconds ahead of fellow Chaudron manufactured Seagull Boat. The Ukrainian Spirit recorded a time 10 seconds ahead of all-Italian rivals, Baia Attolini, in the Donzi Marine hull.
In the Evolution Class only the returning Metamarine Pignolo and Furnibo recorded qualifying times. Elsewhere Cranefields Wine managed to fire their engines but their miserable sequence of bad luck continued as they suffered another technical fault and had to return to the pits.

New Model: Portofino 11 Coupe

After presenting the Portofino 11 Fly in the fall of 2008, the Ligurian boat builder gets things more exciting by presenting the new Coupe version. A more aggressive looker and single lower helm version of the 11 Fly. Portofino is not new to this solutions having offered in the past various top side configurations to the smaller 750, 10, and 37 models. Designer Zagano for the new 11 Coupe launched for the first time this Spring offers an all year usable Sport Cruiser with a panoramic glass hard top, together with a patio door solution. For the rest this boat is the same as the 11 Fly, with the lower deck offering two cabins. Owners cabin to fore, double bunk guest cabin to starboard, and shower head to port. A further double berth can be obtained by converting the c-shaped saloon settee to starboard on the main deck. The galley is also on the main deck to port, this solution offering a better convivial area along with more comfort for the fortunate chef. Power is twin Volvo IPS350 260hp each, or IPS400 300hp with this later option achieving a top speed of 34 knots. Portofino also thought to use a registry length of under ten metres in this case of 9.48 metres, which makes the 11 in both its versions in no need of a maritime registration in Italy.
