Viking Hits Townsend Inlet and Sinks

A sixteen meter Viking sportfish yacht with seven people onboard struck the Townsends Inlet Bridge, and later partially sank on its starboard side at the Avalon Yacht club, in New Jersey USA.  The collision with the Townsends Inlet Bridge happened on 2300 hours of Monday fifth June, and some fifteen minutes later the Viking yacht partially sank.  The causes of the collision are not reported, with the seven people saved from the yacht by the area Coast Guard, and Sea Tow and Northstar Marine assisting keeping the vessel afloat and then on recovering it, which they completed on Wednesday seventh June.  Due to the collision the bridge waterway was temporary closed on Tuesday morning with commercial divers and engineers inspecting and repairing the damage sustained by the impact.
This is the second time the bridge was struck by boat traffic in less to a year, with another collision occurring in July 2022, when a steel built motor vessel under charter with 22 passengers collided with the 1939 made Townsends Inlet.  The Townsends Inlet Bridge is located in New Jersey on the Atlantic ocean, linking Sea Isle City with Avalon Bay.
The Viking in this bridge collision is a first generation 52 Convertible produced from 2002 to 08, with a three cabin layout, and standard powered by twin Man 1050hp or optional 1300hp engines, these last reaching speeds in the mid thirties.  The 52 Convertible came about as a replacement to the first generation 50 Convertible and was replaced by the second generation 54C released in 2008.

Improve-it = Otam 80HT

Otam continue to evolve its 80HT and with this new unit confirmed sold and started construction in March has now arrived in its seventh hull, in twenty years and all fully custom units.  This new hull #007 as Otam likes to call is the most customized yet, although we should have gotten used to the Genoa based builder where each unit is more customized to the previous and an evolution of the species.  Calling it an Improvement is also wrong as each Otam even the smaller ones are all mostly bespoke creations and very-custom units with even the shell changing and evolving.  For example this Otam 80HT will be fully build in a Kevlar Carbon construction and will feature bigger windows, with this giving a lighter feel to the hard-top structure looking similar to that of the 58 more then the other previous six 80s.  Unchanged are the engines with the Otam 80HT powered by twin MTU 2600hp and Arneson surface drives good for a top speed up to 48 knots, as is the naval architecture by Umberto Tagliavini, with the basis coming from the Fabio Buzzi designed 80 Record from 2001 which eventually became the Otam 80HT hull number one when this unit was transformed to a pleasure super sport yacht.

Marine to the Max

MarineMax, the World's largest boat and yacht dealer for value and volume expands its dynamics when in July 2021 they acquired sport cruiser and yacht builder Cruisers.  It will be interesting how MarineMax will develop Cruisers into the future.  MarineMax knows a few things about product and how to sell it.  The US brokerage and dealer house has been Azimut's largest dealership, representing the famous Italian name in North America for over a decade, and was also instrumental in putting Galeon at the top of the sphere in the US.

Founded in 1956 Cruisers was one of the mass produced cabin and sport cruiser brands which had an important growth in the eighties and nighties in that twenty to forty feet plus size.  Other USA boat builders fuelling this express sport cruiser growth and change of boating life style in those times were Carver, Chris-Craft, RegalSea Ray, Trojan, and Wellcraft.

So far MarineMax has not changed any dynamics of the Cruisers brand. But it will be interesting what the future will bring, being that in recent years it was the name resisting and competing with the Euro-imports in the sport cruiser and yacht segment from twelve to eighteen meters in size.
