Project: Viking 37 Billfish

Here is the project for a new Viking 37 Billfish, which is in reality a new badge and a lightly modified Ocean Yachts with the same name launched in 2008 and proving itself as a popular model since.  The story goes like this, when the neighboring Ocean Yachts went bankrupt at the end of 2015,  and the subsequent sale to Dr.Troicki this year, Viking bought the molds of this model. The Viking 37 Billfish will be powered by twin 550hp Cummins on shafts, a big alternative to the five power options offered on the Ocean which also included the choice of IPS pod propulsion.  As the Ocean, the Viking 37 Billfish will also feature two option for the interior layout, with choice of an island double or three berths forward.  Design wise the difference I can note in the project is a new side window profile.  With the new Bertram 35 finalizing production and this rebooted challenge from Viking we might see a new niche in this size for classic looking sport-fish yachts at around eleven meters in size.

Project: Viking 48 Open

One platform and loads of different models coming from it, as Viking did with the 42 and 52, the same formula is used again on the new 48 series which now is added with the new Open project set to launch later on this year. The fourth 48 model series, the 48 Open distinct itself for being an open express type sport-fish with large exterior areas, differing from the SC and ST model for having a one peace hard top available as option.  The split level exterior indeed is huge and the free fish battle aft deck is added with a raised cockpit offering two large L-shape dinette's a central helm station, and two forward looking passenger seats to the sides. Below the 48 Open offers a four berth accommodation, with a forward owners stateroom, bunk twin guest cabin, L-shape dinette to starboard, with a galley and shower head to port side.  Power is from twin Man 1200hp which give speeds above 35 knots and cruise at around 30 knots.

Project: Viking 48 Convertible

Viking continues its inimitable program of introducing new models with the 48 Convertible set to launch and replacing the 46.  This new 48 Convertible is a handsome addition to the world famous Viking with exciting styling, an impressive three stateroom layout couple with the Gretna's known construction and attention to detail. Beginning with the same resin infused beam hull the 48 carries its breadth farther aft for more interior volume, a wider cockpit, and more running surface.  The lush interior abounds with hand-finished teak joinery and spacious appointments throughout the salon including a flat screen television with surround sound. An L-shape lounge and dinette anchor the area for relaxing, dining and entertaining. To port, the galley is accented with Cambria treatments, under counter refrigeration, a microwave/convection oven and plenty of stowage. Inviting accommodations in two staterooms include a queen-size bed forward with private access to the head. A starboard stateroom has upper and lower berths.  Powered comes from twin MAN 1200hp diesels which will the 48 Convertible a cruise at 30 knots with a top end in the mid-end thirties range. The raked entry and forward chine are designed to pierce through head seas and divert spray downward. Convex hull sections add curvature and form to the running surface, while molded running strakes accentuate lateral tracking and maneuverability.  As coming in all the Viking entry level below the 52, the 48 will be offered in Open, and SC and ST hard-top versions.

Project: Bertram 35

It's been one of the most awaited news since the beginning of 2015, when the Gavio Group, who also owns Baglietto and Cerri acquired the Bertram brand.  What was Gavio going to do with the company?  At first came a press release that the only interest Gavio has is to return Bertram into the echelons of sport-fishing.  It was a waiting time and after months asking questions, here comes the answer from Bertram, Gavio, and designer Micheal Peters.  This team made an unsuspecting choice of recreating the legend of Bertram and re-offer the 31 into a new 35 format.  Yes that 31 which sold over one thousand units in a production run of twenty or so years, and a classic boat since its launch. From a certain point of view it was a very interesting choice, and also a challenging one at that.  Today unlike the pioneering days of the 31, this size market is mostly dominated by fast triple or quadruple powered center consoles. But this some might say could also be a blessing in disguise, since the Bertram 35 which currently is under construction at Lynn Morse will have not much competition.  Design wise infect its main competitor will only be the Ocean Yachts 37 Billfish. It will be interesting times, and wishing Bertram the best of returns, since without this name, there is a missing protagonist not only in sportfishing but all the motor boating industry.

New Model: Hatteras 45EX Cruising

Seen for the first time during Fort Lauderdale boat show 2014, the Hatteras 45 Express announcement in Summer of the same year brought in two important news. The good news was the return of Hatteras in the sub fifty foot size since 1998, and to that of an express model from the North Carolina renowned boat builder.  The bad was that the Hatteras 45 Express meant that Versa Ccapital announced that it stopped to build Cabo, which was the most growing and admired name in sub-fifty foot sized sportfish cruisers in recent years.  The 45EX from Hatteras is based on Cabo well received 2010 launched 44 model and will be offered in two distinct versions; Cruising as pictured above and Fishing.  The main difference of these two models is that 45EX Fishing, is sport-fisherman rigged from the factory with tower, outriggers and the rest. Interior layout is offered in two versions; standard is a single cabin, with the optional being a twin with a bunk double berth.  Power is twin 1150hp Cat engines.

Project: Hatteras 45 Express

This project announcement from Hatteras came as a big surprise to me and brand fans alike. Hatteras has not gone sub fifty feet for quite some time, and its last model produced shorter to this size was the 43 Convertible Series II which ended production in March 1998. The Hatteras 45 Express will change this, and sees the legendary Carolina brand return sub fifty after sixteen years, with an express which outside seems to be based a lot on the Cabo 44 to what regards the looks.  The interior has a different layout and will be available with two options; single or two cabin layouts. The single cabin version features a large double size C-shaped settee.  Outside Hatteras is also offering two options; fully tournament sportfish rigged with tower, as will be hull one, or a more cruiser friendly version.  Hatteras also announced that they are already working on a 52 Express. The Hatteras 45 Express will launch and be presented in end October during the Fort Lauderdale boat show.

New Launch: Jarrett Bay 43 Hardtop Express Hull #53

It's been a long construction journey for this Jarrett Bay 43 Hardtop Express which started its life back in 2009, only to be halted a year later due to the recession. Come time the 43 Hardtop Express finds a new owner who jumps into completing hull number 53, and with this come a change of plans and design, transforming itself from an Open, to a Hardtop Express, and modifying the hull to accommodate ZF Zeus pods. In many ways the 43 Hardtop Express is Jarrett Bay most innovative build to date. The Hardtop which occupies the super structure makes it also look different to the other Jarrett Bay fifty plus custom builds. Inside the layout also brings some innovation mostly thanks to the use of the ZF pod drives and the engines located further aft which allow the space for a second twin berth midships located cabin. Performance wise the Jarrett Bay 43 Hardtop Express has still some nice numbers on its side, although not high as the usual custom sportfish boat of forty knots plus. Still the 43 Hardtop Express offers interesting economic runs at a cruise of 31 knots and a fuel burn of 5.5 litres per nautical mile.
Technical Data:
LOA - 13.1 m (43ft)
Waterline Length - 11.8 m

Water Capacity - 189 l
Accommodation - 4 berths in 2 cabins
Engines - 2 x Cummins QSC 600hp
Propulsion - ZF Zeus aft looking dual propeller pod drives
Speed - 31 knots cruise, 36 knots max
Construction - cold moulded epoxy with fiberglass, jig method

Project: Henriques 35 Express HT

Henriques has recently showed a rendering of a new 35 Express HT. It has proved to be a successful formula for the New Jersey based builder in recent times, and after doing the transformation with the 42 last year, and the 50 Henriques seem to be doing the same on this smaller model. The 35 Express HT should be based on the layout of the standard 35 Express model with the addition of a stylish three part Hard-Top covering the pilot house. Just to give an indication the interior layout of a standard 35 Express usually features a galley to port side on entrance, L-shaped saloon opposite, and a double berth plus bunk single to fore. Anyways as far as layouts go, Henriques has shown in its story to be pretty flexible with its clients in customizing boats as requested, so bare with us that this is just an indication.

New Model: Albemarle 360 EXF

It's been a recurring trend in recent years in Sportfish express models to include a  three part enclosed hard top.  Albemarle from the Carolina's, a renowned state of sportfish builders is next to do so. Albemarle starts this with its popular 360 model, now renamed as the Enclosed Express Fisherman for this version.  For the 360 EXF Albermarle also updated little changes to the cockpit layout most concerning the settee behind the center console helm station, and redesigned the dash layout now able to accommodate fifteen inch screens. The 360 EXF hard top also features the EZ2CY back drop to aft, which encloses to full the raised part of the cockpit. Accommodation layout of the 360 EXF mirrors that of the XF version with four or five berths possible below including a galley and a separate shower head.  Power options start from Volvo 435hp with IPS pods, and continue up to 660hp Cat engines.

New Model: Silverton 43 Convertible

Heading into ownership change now owned by the Egg Harbor Group, Silverton presents its first new models. The 43 Convertible is an update to the old model with the same designation but now features a revamp to the exterior which makes it a more cruiser friendly looker, with four large cabin windows featured in the lower deck.  But do not get delusional the 43 Convertible still features sport fisherman amenities as the free aft deck, the center console bridge, a nice range thanks to large short of two thousand liters fuel capacity, which with not much horse power should give interesting nautical miles. The layout plan of the 43 Convertible features two double cabin sleeping four below, a spacious shower head, C-shaped galley all located below.  The main deck offers an L-shaped sofa, C-shaped dinette, and an entertainment unit center to port side.   Power is twin Yanmar 440hp or option 480 units.

Project: Jarrett Bay 46 Walk-Around Express Hull #61

Jarrett Bay starts its sixty-one custom build with a 46 Walk-Around Express.  This new fully custom construction Jarrett Bay 46 Walk-Around Express will be as the title says of a walk around layout, with full deck utility and an easy passage way from stern to bow.  The exterior plan will feature a center located center console with a twin settee helmsman plus passenger, this resting to port side.  To fore of the helm station will be an L-shaped settee, and aft is the must have mezzanine.  No interior plans are shown so far. Power will be twin 1015hp Cat engines. A note shows how performance requirements have increased over time for Sportfish Cruiser and Yachts, with this new 46 having a total of 800 more horses then to a 1999 Jarrett Bay 46 Express Hull#32.

Project: Post 42 Open

Its a new era for Post who are presenting three important new projects. The Post 42 Open, is the first express sportfish model offered by the 1957 founded boat builder.  This new project  is built to showcase the new era of Post Yachts since a couple of years also located in Maryland, out from New Jersey and by the specification on the web site seems to be based on the hull of the standard flybridge convertible 42. The 42 Open will be the first Post to also be offered with pod drive propulsion, a center console style bridge deck, and functional interior layout options that utilize all available interior space. So far no layout details are shown of the new 42 Open, but Post do have a fame for offering comfortable and well laid interior layouts, without loosing touch of the fishing abilities served by its cruisers and yachts.

Project: Huckins 45 Sportfisherman

In the past August Huckins announced that it inked a deal to build a new 45 Sportfisherman.  In this new project Huckins says that its decades of industry experience will allow it to create a boat packed with features rivaling larger Sportfishermen.  This being a Huckins, a variety of custom requests will be incorporated. The two-stateroom, two-head boat with an expansive deck-house and climate-controlled bridge offers the ultimate in relaxation. Twin Cummins 425hp inboards will power this 45-footer to the fishing grounds at over thirty knots, and joystick maneuverability will pay off during the fight and back at the dock. A second helm station on the marlin tower plus full second-station electronics, 28’ Rupp outriggers, rocket launcher, rod holders, baitwell, ice machine that feeds into insulated bins for the day’s catch, extra built-in coolers, freezers, tackle center and bait center are all onboard. A day head has been thoughtfully incorporated to provide convenience for anglers and eliminate traffic through sleeping quarters.

New Model: Viking 42 ST

Viking reports the recent launch of the first 42 ST, these last initials standing for Sport Tower, and as any new model coming from New Jersey garnered significant interest, and this is very expected considering that this model will battle it versus other recently introduced three piece enclosed hard-top express Sportfish Cruisers as the Cabo, Tiara, or the just launched semi-custom build Henriques. Although less than half the size of its upcoming new 92 flagship, its nice to see Viking getting excited on its small ZF pod powered entry level which in its various versions, now counting four is very close to reaching forty builds, in a production of two years.  Not bad in the economic woes we had in recent years and with the consideration that each one of the small Viking's costs only a little under the million US$.  That is surely not cheap for a forty footer, but Viking claims it is building the best, and considering the various fans of the brand around which are not just owners but also captains and yard workers, why should we argue this.

New Model: Henriques 42 Express Hardtop

Basing itself on the popular 42 series from Henriques, the New Jersey US builder presents a new  Express Hardtop model in this line.  Interestingly the owner of hull number one of this new Henriques is on his third boat from the builder, and before this he owned a 42 Express; that is the model without the enclosed hardtop. This style of sportfishing cruisers coming to a more core builder definitely comes from what other brands have done in the last years to offer a fully enclosed three side hard-top deck allowing for a more practical use of the boat all year round. The Henriques 42 Express has its success for being one of the best sport fishing dedicated platform in its size, and with this version the builder definitely wants to capitalize more on the cruise side to owners who want to fish and cruise as possible.  Inside accommodation of the Henriques 42 is a sport fishing standard offered in an open plan layout, with a master double berth to fore, L-shaped settee, galley, and a shower head.  The exterior is typical sportfishing flavour offering a split level deck with the aft lower part fully dedicated to fishing.  Two steps up and you have the hardtop covered area which offers a large L-shaped settee, and three forward facing settees with the helm located centrally.

Improve-it = Carolina Classic 35

Carolina Classic has been very quiet in recent years in presenting new models, so when this small volume high quality US builder recently launched its 35 feet flagship with some improvements it was fair to give them some space on PowerYachtBlog.  This latest Carolina Classic 35 was recently launched with a new hard top design more extended then to the original.  This just launched 35 is powered by twin Cummins 550hp giving a nice cruise of 31 knots, and the solid ride this US builder is associated with.  The Carolina Classic 35 is the flagship of a four model line up of well build sportfish cruisers which start at 25 feet.  The 35 features a two plus two interior layout with a forward berth, L-shaped saloon, galley, and separate head.  The cockpit features a free aft deck space, with two step higher area offering a large L-shaped lounger, and the helm station to starboard. Her hull is a full solid fiberglass build something rare these days, and the V-shape keel with fine sharp entry closes at eighteen degrees aft.

New Model: Cabo 44 Express

Following on the success of the Cabo 44 Hardtop Express, the famous production sportfish is clever to present a full open version of this the 44 Express, which replaces the long standing 45 model.  With a hull designed by famous underwater lines specialist Michael Peters the main difference between its predecessor is the removal of the hardtop. But this little detail changes the whole concept of this sportfish cruiser, also making it become a more fisherman hardcore machine.  The elevated pod helm station comes standard with two seats with an option of third.  Inside is also the same ingenious interior with a single cabin and a fisherman utility room, or a two cabins choice in between the L-shaped settee and galley.  Power is for four engine choices from twin Cats 710 up to 1150hp, with MAN 800s in between.
