Project: Azimut 76 Magellano

Azimut presents the new 76 Magellano with a World wide presentation upcoming in the next Genoa boat show.  The new 76 is a further development of the 2009 acclaimed Ken Freivokh designed 74 which also the first Magellano.  An extension to the appreciated Bill Dixon dual mode hull and total redesign of the interior from the main to the lower deck characterizes the new 76.  Some important changes are; astern galley on the main deck now located to starboard instead of port side, bunk fourth cabin, two crew cabins with removal of lower galley, and reduction of tender garage space.  Fuel capacity has also been increased in the 76 Magellano by over 300 liters to 7500, with a loss coming of the same ammount in water.  Power is twin MAN 1000hp which should give the quite heavy 64 tons loaded a max 22 knots speed, and 17 cruise.

New Model: Mochi 64 Dolphin Cruiser

A new and much awaited launch for Mochi Craft, who just put in the water the latest of the planing line, the 64 Dolphin Cruiser. In the last days of July, the technical launching operations for this new Mochi have been carried out at the dock of Cesenatico Italy. This new model is the tryed and tested result and collaboration between the famous architect Brunello Acampora from Studio Victory Design one of today's best hull designers, and Norberto Ferretti Advanced Yacht Technology and the Centro Stile Ferrettigroup, and is a further development of the 64 Dolphin. This team has designed all the Mochi Dolphin down East lobster inspired cruisers and yachts. After all technical operations are completed, the second Dolphin Cruiser will move to France, where it will be presented as a world premiere at the 35th edition of the Cannes show, from 11th to 16th September, and after this going to one of the largest boat shows in Genoa Italy at the start of October. As expected with a hull having the signature of Victory design sailing excellence is a big part of this new model, mixed up with comfort and a further touch of Italian innovation are key-words of this new 64 Dolphin Cruiser. A painstaking care for on board finishing is the characteristic of the brand: from deck gunwales to lifelines in solid teak with a natural finishing, to the master craftsmanship featured in the cleats obtained from one single block of steel, bearing the engraving of the dolphin. Wide glazing of the 64 Dolphin Cruiser offers extended views of the sea, and the external light enhances the volumes on board. Light is the protagonist underdeck as well, thanks to the typical glazing on the hull. The distinguishing feature of the external layout is the wide flybridge, extending towards the stern, covering the cockpit which is a major difference in this new Cruiser series as shown in the previously launched 74. Inside the 64 Dolphin Cruiser presents three double cabins, with a full beam owners room to midships. Another nice very Italian yacht feature of the 64 Dolphin Cruiser is the seperate galley to starboard on the main deck, with an eight persons dining table opposite to port side. Power is from twin MAN 1100 or 1224hp engines which give max speeds up to 31 knots with the large choice.

Project: Jeanneau 42 Voyage

Jeanneau presents the Tony Castro designed project for the new 42 Voyage, set to be unveiled at the end of 2012 at the Paris boat show.  This Jeanneau 42 Voyage project takes the French company to a new direction offering looks reminiscent of a trawler.  Lets say the new Voyage will be the first challenge at least in the looks department to a known Italian firm as the hull and engines power seems more that of a planning boat.  Not much details are given for interior space and layout but we do know that the 42 Voyage will offer two separate cabins.  Power will be twin 380hp Cummins with line shafts which give speeds up to 28 knots.  The 42 Voyage will also have a wide range of cruise speeds available upwards from 15 knots.

Improve-it = Fipa Maiora 29

Efficient Propulsion, this is how the Viareggio based Italian yard Fipa Maiora named its latest 29 model launch which has mostly the exterior lines similar to the previous sister ships of this line with the rest being quite a revolution for the yachting industry. This new Fipa Maiora 29 will feature the use of Fortjes 4000 Reintjes pod drives in replacement to the standard line shafts used usually on this model, which in combination with 1920hp MTU should save about 30% in consumption at cruise of 23 knots.  Top speed for this new Fipa Maiora 29 is 28 knots.  Another feature of this Maiora 29 is the use of active fin stabilizers for better stability at anchor and under way.  Constructed in Kevlar this particular new Maiora 29 was finished with bleached grey oak, matched with Ivory colored leathers interior.  Four double cabins serve the owners and his guest, with the master stateroom located to midships.  Two crew cabins with a small galley, and relaxing sofa are located to midships in between the engine room and owners stateroom.  This latest Maiora 29 will feature a stern and bow deck garage.  The aft will host a rib tender, while the garage to fore has a space for two jet bikes.  It will be interesting how other owners perceive this revolutionary new Maiora 29, which also breaks a lot of moulds not only to Fipa Italian yachts but to yachting in general.  Well done Fipa Italiana Yachts and Maiora!

The Next Revolution

Sleek flybridge boats with low profile upper structure was the one in the nineties.  Hard top sport yachts, and how some of these actually give comfort of a flybridge without the top deck and upper helm was the one in the past decade. Now whats next?
I think many users are looking at a boat which can offer the goods of a planning boat, and a semi displacement with some revolution looks.  Azimut always very attentive to client trends was among the first to offer something of this calibre with its Magellano line and its patented hull shape, but another long time builders in more explorer orientated cruisers are improving there current models to this style of boat.  A worth note here goes to the small Grand Banks 41 Heritage now to be revamped as 43 in the coming fall and its ZF Zeus pods power, and the upcoming Nordhavn 52 Coastal. Another interesting offer was also the Mochi 23M Long Range which I am still surprised not to see the Italian builder as yet not presenting smaller sized models with the same concept.
The French giant Beneteau Group which in the last years has upgraded its power line impressively is also making interesing attempts at this market, although a glimpse in new modern ship looks to challenge the Magellano recently came from the upcoming new Jeanneau 42 Voyage which apart its looks is on facts a planning boat.  But the most interesting offer from Beneteau will come from its new 50 Swift Trawler which is to be powered by Volvo IPS pods, and will have a main deck worthy of its name and lower cabin area to challenge the more modern looking boats.
It will be interesting what the following to this type of boats will be in the market. So far my estimate is that they hold like 10% of the current market share which is about double to what it was like five years ago.  So growth is there but how much can this become will be the buyers to decide.  The thing is that they still remain the boat for the mature boater who in most cases comes from a motor and sailing experience.

Formula 2013 Photo Shoot

Formula boats recently took a few team members to the beautiful island of Bimini in the Bahamas for the Model Year 2013 photoshoot season; however, the first go-around wasn’t much to write home about. The first trip was mid-June and spirits were high. The boats looked beautiful, but a tropical storm moved in, forcing the crew to stop their boating efforts from Miami to Bimini. A “Plan B” was discussed, which involved boating near Key Largo, Florida—they desperately wanted to make the photoshoot work! Everyone loaded back up on the boats and the company van and headed in the direction of Key Largo. Once everyone arrived and checked in very late, they made it to their rooms for some shut-eye. The morning arrived quickly and they were on the docks by 8 a.m., only to be hit with more rain and cloudy skies. It was heartbreaking, but “Plan C” had to be addressed, which was to head home and discuss a new date—so that’s what the crew decided to do! After regrouping and changing calendars, boats and much more, the crew headed back to Bimini in mid-July. The second trip, we are happy to say, was a complete success! Although the temperatures were extremely muggy and hot each day, it was hard to complain after all the work it took to try again, and, after all, the Formulas were gorgeous and glistening in the Bimini blue water, it really makes one appreciate every moment of each day on and off the water!

Mulder Cooperation with Omega Architects

The construction of the new 30-metre Mulder 98 Flybridge is currently in full swing. In consultation with the client, Mulder Shipyard commissioned Frank Laupman of Omega Architects to design the interior of this boat. Omega has previously designed the interior of the second Bellagio, which was recently sold by Mulder Shipyard. The Bellagio is constructed under the Built by Mulder label. Work is presently ongoing on the 30-metre aluminium hull of the new Mulder 98 Flybridge. Once the hull is completed, the next step will be the installation of the piping for the various systems. The entire interior of the yacht will be ‘floating’ in order to ensure optimal sound and vibration insulation. The interior consists largely of American walnut, both stained and natural, and the design comprises striking contrasts in both colours and materials. For instance, there are many leather panels, while various brushed stainless steel details create a modern ambiance. The entire interior is built in house by Mulder Interior Construction, guaranteeing perfect workmanship and quality. The construction of the first Bellagio is in full swing and the yacht will be completed in the course of this year. Furthermore, a second Bellagio was sold last month to a client in Russia. This yacht will have an interior designed by Omega Architects, just like the Mulder 98 Flybridge. The interior will be bright and modern, with a very open character. The second Bellagio will be used by the owner for daytrips. Mulder Shipyard has high expectations from this new model. Mulder Shipyard is currently working together with several other naval architects in addition to Omega Architects. This portfolio of designers makes it possible for the yard to translate all the wishes and ideas of its clients into a superlative design in the best possible way.

Sunseeker Needs Bigger Quay

The latest milestone in Sunseekers illustrious boat building history took place last week when the completed hull of the first 155 Yacht moved location within our Poole Quay facilities. The operation involved meticulous planning and execution with literally no room for error given the monstrous dimensions involved. As expected, the move went without a hitch and Hull #1 is now safely in the 'fit out' stage of her build. This yacht represents many 'firsts' for Sunseeker, not least of which is the fully painted finish she'll be receiving later in the build. Because of this, a clear gel coat has been used in the hull construction, the resin showing through and making the hull appear brown in colour. With the almost unlimited colour choice available, we're keeping the finished colour for this particular yacht under wraps for the moment. The Sunseeker 155 Yacht is the largest to date undertaken by the Poole Shipyard, which can now soundly lay claim to being the only production boat builder in the world to be manufacturing a range of boats from 40 to 155 feet in length under a single brand.

New Model: Maritimo M58 Motoryacht

Maritimo shows up its second in large size Motoryacht model which follows by fifteen feet the M73 flagship.  This new Maritimo presents itself with the usual traits from this down under builder with sport fish looks combined into motor yacht practicality.  This proven with the comfortable and easy to access walk around side decks, and internal stair case to the raised pilot house.  Other very nice touches in this new Maritimo are the aft galley, and the relaxing view area behind the helm in the raised bridge.  Three double guest cabins serve the owner and his friends.  Impressive in size is the owners suite to midships; which features among other things a beauty desk, and an office. Fair to say the third bunk cabin is stealed from some more space by the owners suite.  Power is from twin Volvo 800hp engines with line shafts.  An impressive for an eighteen meter motor yacht 5000 liters fuel capacity supplies the Maritimo M58 Motoryacht.
