Nordhavn Aground in Ocean Reef Florida Keys

A 24 meter Nordhavn super yacht titled m/y Jess Jonn ran aground in Ocean Reef on the Florida Keys to the Southern part of Miami on May eight.  The causes of the grounding are not confirmed, though in some forums and people knowledgeable of the area are suggesting then when tide is on the low side it is suggested you stay on your port side pushing to the red markers in that channel. Another unconfirmed rumour is that the owner was operating the yacht at the time of the accident.  Thankfully the grounding seems to have made little or no damage to M/y Jess Conn as she was reported back underway on the 14th May heading North.
M/y Jess Conn is hull one of the Nordhavn 80 which launched in 2021.  A design of Vripack the Nordhavn 80 was presented as a project in 2017 filling the gap between the N76 and N86 models, with a three double cabins six berth guest accommodation and two or four crew berths layout, and is powered by twin Deere 375hp.  Nordhavn has so far sold five N80 units.

Cantieri di Pisa New Web Site

Cantieri di Pisa presents its new World wide web showroom.  Founded by Gino Bini and Antonio Sostegni unofficially in 1945, and officially in 1956 Cantieri di Pisa started life in the commercial harbour of Pisa, and will move in 1959 on the limits of the Arno river, a place which as at today is still home.  The first yachts are wooden sailing yachts; the 20mt Tyrsa in 1945 and the 30mt Kerilos will follow in 1950.  In 1961 the 10 meters Jupiter is launched, starting the motor boat semi-series which interestingly are always named to celestial bodies, constellations, and planets from our solar system; Akhir, Kaitos, Kitapha, Pegasus, Polaris, and Saturno the names being used.  Pierluigi Spadolini will be the architect of all the Pisa motor boats up till the early noughties with Carlo Galeazzi taking design duties in 2008 with the Akhir 108 model. Cantieri di Pisa had various owners onwards from 2001 when German fund investor Dresdner Kleiwort Capital takes 51% of ownership, with Bini and Sostegni keeping the remaining.  In 2004 Camuzzi Group takes 91% of ownership and follows a year later with a total buyout.  Onward from 2010 Cantieri di Pisa enters in crisis with various owners being rumoured of buying out the company every season, eventually Alessandro Falcai buys the yard in 2015 and sells to Sea Finance in 2018.  Since 2021 Cantieri di Pisa is owned by current owner Enrico Gennasio from Alfagomma Group, a fittings firm from Lombardy in Italy who branches out in all industrial sectors.  Over its half a century plus of history Cantieri di Pisa has build over 600 yachts, in semi-custom or custom made to order builds, at first its construction was strictly in wood, but in the nineties the yacht builder made a switch to fiberglass, first as a choice and then totally switching to the material.  The Akhir series which launched with the wooden 16 motor yacht in 1972 proved a successful line which expanded over the years in always bigger sizes and updating styling with the S update to 22 model in 1986 proving a popular one.  Another timeless looking classic Cantieri di Pisa is the seventies introduced Kitaplha 15 which still gets admiring views whenever one gets to see a well conditioned unit.  Cantieri di Pisa largest ever build is the Carlo Galeazzi designed Akhir 153 which launched in 2012 and built in only one unit.  Currently Cantieri di Pisa offers five models in three lines, starting with the Tender 50 of the Chase Boat line, going to the 80 GT and 80 Veloce of the Fast Commuter, and the Akhir 110, 122, and 140 of the Flybridge series.  Cantieri di Pisa new web site takes you around with the following buttons; Home, The Fleet, Custom Division, Services, History, and Contact.  Cantieri di Pisa is also on social media with bottom page links taking you to its Facebook, Instagram, and Linkedin pages.

New Model: Zeelander 5

Zeelander debuted its new 5 model duing the 2023 Palm Beach boat show held at the end of March at Palm Harbor Marina. The new Zeelander 5 is a natural evolution of the Z44, although this is not just redesign and hull extension as the 5 apart presenting a more contemporary look is also about a meter longer and thirty centimetres wider. The curvaceous Zeelander silhouette is still instantly recognisable, but compared to the Z44, the shearline is more voluptuous than ever, and now follows an elongated ‘S’ shape. The traditional yacht features bigger windows in the wheelhouse and in the hull. Zeelander has succeeded in eliminating mullions altogether around the helm, for true, unencumbered 360-degree vision. The beautifully sculpted wheelhouse can now be fully enclosed with a door and window, or opened up to a refreshing breeze, making her as suitable for cool climates as for warm. The Zeelander 5 offers effortless boarding through doors in the bulwarks, a new sun-pad on the foredeck, and a bathing platform that is almost twice as big compared to the Z44. The extra one meter of hull length has been put to striking effect in the generous master cabin, with its separate shower and head. Peerless interior styling of the yacht can be fully personalised or owners can choose from four carefully curated moodboards. The Zeelander 5 has a maximum speed of forty knots courtesy of three Volvo Penta 480hp with IPS drives propulsion and at the same time manages to be 2dBA quieter than its predecessor.

Project: Magazzu M16

Magazzu have leaked information of a new M16 currently in build.  Designed by Claudio Magazzu the M16 is to be the second largest Magazzu build to date, following the MX-18 Coupe which apparently has been so far delivered in only one unit.  The new M16 seems also to be a new M-range, which is a departure from the long standing MX range.  The M16 is a walk around design with a central console, and a hard-top which covers a third of the deck. A construction detail will be the rigid tubes and the cut-out in the bulk heads which give side views and an environmental contact.  A central helm station will feature a wet-bar behind, with a dinette aft, and a central sun-pad.  To foredeck is another sun-pad with two opposite settees further forward.  The interior is reported to offer a two cabins layout, both with en-suite shower head, and a saloon in between the cabins.  The Magazzu M16 will also offer a novelty in its power solution and is to be powered by twin Volvo 600hp with IPS pod drives.

Designer Brand

In a press release received nineteen April, World famous from Venice Italy yacht designers Nuvolari Lenard have announced to enter super yacht building with there own brand.  Called the Nuvolari Lenard Yachts this new range is to be build in Turkey by Mengi-Yay and will feature four models from 47 to 65 meters. Two units of the smaller 47 meter S1 model are currently in build, with the second in size 52 meter 50 Plus model also starting construction.

Designer branding is not entirely new as in the past, in the late eighties to the nighties we have seen another Italian designer, Paolo Caliari do this, with his Caliari Yacht series launching an 80 model with a bigger thirty meter being in project which never materialized.  Caliari yacht was a company with Mochi as its main share holder, though all the four 80s made are reported to be made at Cantieri Navali Santa Margherita,

Both designers are among the most famous in the period they operated.  Paolo Caliari curriculum apart having a whose who list of yacht builders from the seventies and eighties, was a guaranteed success, and many of his designs for Mochi and Leopard are regarded timeless today and having shaped the yacht design of that present, and future.  The same can be said of Nuvolari Lenard, who burst in the scene in 1993 with the VZ 18, followed by the Sarnico 45 in 1995.  Nuvalari Lenard will then take design duties at Mochi the fall of 95, which will make them enter super yachting with the 25 Mega launched a year later and Palmer Johnson from 1998 onwards, which will make them design the 59 meter and the Sport series which debuted with the 105 in 2002.

But probably the most successful designer branding was Hunt Yachts, of credited deep Vee inventor Ray Hunt with the Bertram Moppie in 1960.  Founded in 1998 Hunt yachts was first a subsidiary of  C. Raymond Hunt design but in 2013 it was sold to Hinckley Group.  Another similar fate to Hunt was also made by Hargrave, another designer who is famous for his work for Bertram competitor Hatteras.  Hargrave was founded in 1997 but unlike Hunt has concentrated mostly in building super yachts above 24 meters in size.
