Next and third round for the 2009 P1 season is San Benedetto del Tronto, the city in Marche, Italy, in the province of Ascoli Piceno situated on the Adriatic Sea. San Benedetto is a key fishing port, and one of the main seaside resorts of the renowned Adriatic coast. Powerboat P1 arrived in San Benedetto for the first time in the 2008 season, opening last year calendar and receiving a fantastic reception from power boating fans. This Grand Prix of the Sea in San Benedetto del Tronto will also run in conjunction with the exciting Italian Powerboat Series (IPS).
In Evolution the local fans will surely have there eyes set on local team Metamarine, the company formed by Marco Pennesi in 2001, Supersport Class winner in 2004, and second runner up in 2008. So far 53 Metamarine after a terrific accident in the first round in Malta started the season all uphill, but a positive result in the Turkish Grand Prix second race placing third are showing the goods for this diesel powered boat. High expectations are also expected for the three teams showing big potential this year the 10 Cigarette Smash Poker, 77 Lucas Oil Outerlimits, and 33 Furnibo all coming from great racing in Turkey. Evolution Class leader 47 Silverline who are first thanks to there reliability is surely looking for ways to increase also the performance of the boat in order to keep the much sought after leadership. Looking for reliability is also 88 SNAV OSG who came from Turkey disappointed collecting no points and loosing it leadership, because of various technical gremlins. Same story for German team 66 Cranefields Wine who still are looking for the important reliability and speed elements.
Supersport Class is showing that 2009 will be a never ending battle up till the last second. The thinking is that this class this year has five possible winners, with the calmer seas showing fifth place standing but two race winner Team SW1 Capital having that little extra pace. The tie is so close that the division between the first three teams: 43 Seagull Chaudron, 38 Baia Attolini, and 44 Iko Casa are grouped in only a thirty points distance. In this class the reliability price goes to Belgian 17 Mas Force who are placed fourth. The two Al&Al team boats the new 28 Blue Shaft, and 22 Big Sergio are last. Worth to note that Big Sergio showed some great speed potential during the Turkish Power Pole. There is also a wild card from a known face with the 8 Ocean Dragon, Mercury powered Formula hull making its 2009 debut in Italy.
