Azimut Yacht Fire in Aventura Florida Leaves One Injured

A 21 meter Azimut motor yacht went ablaze and severely injured one person on 1925 hours of Friday second September in 1520 Island Blvd, Aventura, Florida.  Miami-Dade fire rescue responded to the fire with twenty persons from both land and water.  One man which is reported the only person onboard the yacht was air-lifted to Ryder Trauma Center with severe burns.  The fire was extinguished at about 2200 hours of the night, with it not spreading into other yachts and the marina.
The yacht in this fire is an Azimut 70 a model produced from 2008 till 2015 to a design of Stefano Righini.  Released in the fall of 2008 as a replacement to the successful 68 Plus and Evolution, the 70 was also an evolution of the 68 with a larger fourth cabin, and the choice to separate or open the galley on the main deck.  The Azimut 70 is powered by twin 1360hp Man engines which give her speeds up to 32 knots.  She was replaced by the Righini designed 72 in the fall of 2015.

Super Yacht Capsizes and Sinks in Kythnos

M/y 007 a 49 meter super yacht went aground and later capsized and partly sank in Kolones Bay, Kythnos island, part of the Cyclades archipelago of islands in South East Greece on the night of second September.  The super yacht reportedly ran aground breaching the hull in the process and causing a high influx of water and tilting to port side, with the yacht later capsizing about fifteen meters away from the beach.  It is said but not confirmed that the captain was trying to beach m/y 007 before it capsized.  The super yacht had five passengers at the time of the accident, which are all reported safe.  No pollution is reported.
M/y 007 is a 2006 Aegean Yachts build in Turkey to a design of Yavuz Mete.  Launched as Amazon A in 2006 as a 32 meter, she was first extended to 42 meters, and then again to its current 49 meters size.  Build of steel she is powered by twin Cats 650hp engines which give her a top speed up to twelve knots.  Refitted in 2012 and 2018, m/y 007 was last reported sold in 2012 and was not currently listed for sale.

Project: Amer 950

Amer present the project for a new entry level 950 super yacht.  Coming from a design of Ganto studio the Amer 950 also marks Permare first fifty years of activity and ten years of IPS system installation and collaboration with Volvo. A hull that deviates from the traditional lines of Amer to favor generous internal and external spaces, following the concept of adaptability and high comfort of the wide body main deck with a suspended flybridge as introduced with the 120 flagship launched in 2021, and here repeated on a smaller scale. The Amer 950 responds to a stylistic need that favors airy and generous spaces, side and bow balconies, connected to the master on the main deck, which allow continuous ventilation of the spaces on board and views from all angles. The width of the flybridge and its versatility are an interpretation of living navigation and anchoring in the bays from a privileged point and in total privacy, giving the feeling of walking on a stage overlooking the sea. On board the Amer 950 has an integration of systems that makes it extremely simple to use: from dynamic mooring to easy connection and the setup for easy mooring. The hull has a design that foresees onboard energy efficiency and the insertion of solar panels that take advantage of the flat surfaces. The flexibility of Cantiere Permare gives space to the creativity of demanding owners to design with four or five cabins layout available. The Amer 950 was created to be powered by twin Volvo 1000hp engines with IPS pod drives, good for 26 knots max and a 24 cruise with low fuel consumption and ample autonomy.  For those who want more performance a triple 1000hp engines version is also available.

Sunseeker Yacht Destroyed by Fire in Saint Mandrier

M/y Black Diamond a 28 meter Sunseeker super sport yacht went ablaze while berthed at the IMS shipyard in Saint Mandrier, on the early morning of Friday second September.  Explosions where heard at 0100 hours before the yacht went ablaze.  Forty fire fighters flighted the flames up till the early morning in order to avoid the fires from jumping onto other yachts and the yard facilities.  The yacht is now a wreck and mostly submerged, with only the hull remaining.  Black Diamond is reported as arriving at Saint Mandrier on the 28 August.  No one was reported injured in the accident.
M/y Black Diamond is a 2010 Sunseeker Predator 92 Sport, powered with the large MTU 2400hp engines and surface drives option for speeds up to 42 knots.  Designed by Don Shead and presented in the fall of 2008 the Predator 92 Sport was Sunseeker first model to feature a mini sport bridge up top, a style which eventually the Poole based builder named the Sport Yacht range.  Sunseeker sold ten Predator 92 Sport replacing it with the larger 101 Sport Yacht in 2013.

New Model: Azimut Grande 26M

Catch me if you can, Azimut's story for over three decades as it re-invents motor yachting in various forms and sizes and in design and engineering.  This new Grande 26M follows that script for the others to follow.  Replacing the nimble and sporty 25M as the baby Grande, opening the door to the big Azimut super yachts build in Viareggio, the Grande 26M comes with two important innovations; a selling one the Flex Deck, and a technical one thanks to the use of new ZF pod drives as propulsion.  The Flex Deck is the selling innovation expanding the aft deck area with the beach/garage area door going up and extending the floor, and creating a terrace on the water.  The second innovation, the technical one is the use of ZF pod drives.  Back in 2009 Azimut was heavily involved in testing the ZF pod drives with reported tests going on a 62S fitted with ZF4000 and twin 1200hp engines.  Somehow the 62S with ZF never materialized, and the 62S Italia ended up remaining on shafts and Azimut switching to triple IPS on later S models.  The results of those tests seem to have arrived, with the new Grande 26M fitted with new large ZF pod drives which look to be an exclusive to Azimut for the moment finally arriving on a production yacht.  Azimut is saying that thanks to its search for light weight materials and efficient propulsion the 26M Grande delivers 20% less consumption to similar sized yachts.

Lobster Cruiser Ends Aground in Skye Scotland

A fourteen meter traditional cruiser with three people onboard ended aground in the West of Skye, to the West of Scotland on 1230 hours of September the first.  The traditional cruiser was apparently speeding at sustained planning speeds entering into a channel, but ended up too far inshore, hitting the reefs in this navigational error.  Stornaway Coast Guard received a mixed call for assistance with the Burra Lifeboat having problems in finding the three crew, as the boat ran aground in a communication black spot. No one was injured in the accident with the boat taking a lot of damage to its central keel, chines, propellers, shafts, and hull side.  Surprisingly the P-brackets which hold the shafts resisted the collision and did not penetrate the hull, in part thanks to the protection the central keel provides.
The fourteen meter traditional cruiser in this accident is a Rapsody 48 Offshore model.  Inspired to a traditional down East lobster boat, the Rapsody 48 Offshore was produced from 2000 up to 2008, offering an interior with two double cabins sleeping four, and is powered by twin Yanmar 440hp good for 28 knots of top speed.

New Labels Added to Out-News

Unfortunately it was a busy Summer with an accident of some sort happening on the water every day, in a a sad turn of events as the sea and cruising is a place to chill and relax.  Fire was the main protagonist but the most shocking accidents came from a couple of crazy collisions where some people lost there lives, and both happening in July, one off the coast of Tuscany and another in Sardinia.

Seeing all this and that Out-News or Bad News travels much faster then Good News, here at PowerYacht we added six three new labels; Boat and Yacht Damage, Boat and Yacht Salvage, and Boat and Yacht Wreck

This labels represent the outcome for the boat or yacht in the accident.  Damage means there is a chance even a small one for it to be repaired. Salvage means that the boat may still be mostly in a repair state, although this is very difficult and costly to achieve.  Wreck means that the boat or yacht are totalled and chances of repair are non existent.

Ferretti Unveils Infynito

Ferretti Yachts presents Infynito, the new range of yachts created to complement the current flybridge offering and explore the essence of the sea. The project’s aim is to develop iconic trendsetters designed to propel the brand into the future. Infynito introduces extraordinary features that innovate the yachting experience and a style that gives shape to owners’ new needs: seamless contact with the surrounding environment, even more sustainable materials and navigation, plus custom detailing, where minimalism and representation make way for harmony, essence, sophistication and a direct link with the sea and the sky. The key innovation is visual continuity between interiors and exteriors, connecting the boat to the horizon as never before. This is how the experience becomes infinite: with no more limits and boundaries, the view sweeps far and wide and navigation is purer, more personal and more introspective. The understated design is clean and balanced, expressing new values that point the way to the more natural and sustainable approach to cruising increasingly embraced by owners. Infynito styles itself as the range inspired by explorer vessels, boats designed for long voyages and to welcome guests in total comfort, giving the owner that “just like home” feeling in the intimacy, safety and relaxing atmosphere of a space that embodies this concept. It also introduces F.S.E.A. (Ferretti Sustainable Enhanced Architecture), a package of environmentally friendly cruising solutions. They include a solar roof that generates electric power to charge the onboard batteries, and hotel mode operation, a technology that creates an atmosphere of total relaxation on board, with zero emissions thanks to a special lithium battery pack. Finally, the crucial choice of greener materials: ecological paints, sustainable teak, recyclable fabrics and leathers. Another key point is the development of the Main Deck, where the view sweeps seamlessly from interior to exterior and from bow to stern. The design of this space, one of the new range’s most distinctive and iconic features, includes FY’s ground-breaking “all season terrace”, a spacious and atmospheric area that is hidden from prying eyes when the yacht is moored on the quay and functional at sea in all weather conditions. Ferretti Yachts Infynito is the result of collaboration between the Strategic Product Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. The exterior design and hulls are by Filippo Salvetti, while the interiors are the work of Ideaeitalia.

Viking at 49 White Marlin Open

The 49th annual White Marlin Open (WMO) saw a slow week of fishing for the 408 battlewagons vying for a piece of the $8.6 million prize money. Tournament Director Andy Motsko said that 1,504 billfish were taken in 2019 compared to this year’s 59 blue marlin and 155 whites – which is 1,290 fewer fish! But the fifth and final day saw $6 million change hands. And Vikings rose to the occasion! Keeley Megarity, fishing on his Viking 66 C- Student, weighed one of only four white marlin brought to the scales - a 71.5-pound fish. The white was caught on Day 4, and by the end of the five-day event claimed 2nd Place White Marlin. Captain Ken Blackman was at the helm. Frank Sinito Jr. had a strong tournament while fishing on his Viking 62 Irene. Not only did Frank land the Top Dolphin (59.5 pounds) he also released three white marlin earning him 10th Place Angler, a stellar job considering the enormous field of anglers. Third Place Wahoo went to Patrick Brown with a 51.5-pound fish. Patrick fished on the Viking 55 Irish Twin. Over 1,000 pounds of fresh tuna, mahi and marlin were donated to the Maryland Foodbank. Not a fish was wasted! The Superbowl of Sportfishing always brings plenty of thrills to the dock. It also brings a heck of a lot of anglers! Given the 408 registered boats, we figure there were 2,448 anglers*. Normally we cover places 1st through 3rd but the top 20 finishes at the WMO are the upper echelon of sportfish – we’re talking the top 5%! So, let’s take a look at the crème de la crème of the WMO. Fifth Place Top Boat (top 1.22%) and Fifth Place Release Boat was Michael Jordan’s Viking 80 Catch 23.
