Classic Boat Crashes Into Rockingham Jetty

A classic eleven meter flybridge cruiser crashed, and then partly sank into Rockingham Yacht Club Jetty, in Rockingham, Western Australia on the late night of 31 January.  The cause of the accident are not reported but chats on social media are saying the captain collided with the jetty for a couple times, before eventually hitting bottom, and then partly sinking grounding the cruiser in the spot.  The classic flybridge cruiser was still in the same spot, partly sank and tied up to Rockingham Jetty as at ninth February.
The classic boat in this sinking looks to be a Mariner 38 Mk.I as build in the seventies.  Mariner Boats in Australia was founded by Bill Barry-Cotter in 1969 who he will sell in 1978, to then found Riviera in 1980 and then sell again in 2002, to then establish his third boat building brand Maritimo, which today he manages with his sons.

Record Snowfall in Juneau Alaska Sinks Eight Boats

Record snowfall in between thirteen to 25 January in Juneau, Alaska has sunk about eight boats, and damage partly sank some more.  The first heavy snow storm arrived on the thirteen January and that did over half a meter of snowfall in one night.  Since then and for twelve days the storms did not stop, with January 2024 reaching over a meter and half of snow fall, sixteen centimetres less to the record set in January 2009, when 191 centimetres of snowfall was recorded for a whole month.  Of the eight boats that sunk two are pleasure boats, with the rest being mostly commercial fisher-craft.  Some pleasure boats suffered a partial sinking, also because most of these are kept in covered slips as the above picture shows.
Juneau is located to the South-East of Alaska, in the Gulf of Alaska, bordering to the North with the Bering Sea and to the Pacific Ocean in the South.  Juneau has a population of just over thirty thousand with temperatures that reach twenty degrees Celsius plus in Summer and going to below zero in the Winter months.

Classic Trojan Sinks in Pittsburgh

A classic nine meter Trojan partly sank on the morning of second January at North Shore, Pittsburgh, Pensylvania.  The Trojan cruiser partly sank only because it rested on the river bed which is just over a meter deep.  Following the sinking Pittsburgh authorities protected the sunk cruiser with boons to avoid pollution from spreading.  The Trojan cruiser was reported to arrive and moor in that particular spot only some days before it eventually sank.  This particular Trojan classic was reported sold in September 2023.
The Trojan in this sinking is an F-30 Sea Raider the full fiberglass version which arrived after 1974, as initially this series was build with a fiberglass hull and wooden super structure, launching in 1970.  The flybridge in the 30 Sea Raider was an option, to the hard-top express version.

Larnaca Marina Fire Totals Two Boats Damages Another

A fire which started on a flybridge cruiser of about thirteen meters in length at Larnaca Marina in Cyprus, at 13:26 hours of 21 December has totalled two boats, and damaged another.  Reports say the fire started on a thirteen meter flybridge cruiser, which then with the strong winds jumped to a sport cruiser of similar size to its starboard side, and while on fire also damaged a power catamaran on its port side.  The first two cruisers where towed outside the marina, while the power catamaran received important fire damage on its starboard side.  Larnaca Fire Station responded with two fire fighting vehicles, taking about about an hour to control the blaze, with the two cruisers being towed outside the marina already half burned, after which they sank from the flames and rough sea conditions of the day.  No one was injured in the fire, as the boats where reported unattended, with the cause of the blaze being under investigation.
The three boats in this fire are the Garroni designed Jeanneau Prestige 46 produced from 2003 to 2011, a Pershing 43 as designed by Fulvio de Simoni and produced from 2001 to 04, and a Leopard 39 Powercat as produced from 2012 to 22.  The boat ownerships are reported to be two of Cypriots and one of a Ukrainian national.

For this hit and run the Ponchatoula Police are asking about information in order to charge for damages.
The towed Chris-Craft in this accident looks to be a classic 37 Constellation.  Build in wood planking the Chris Craft 37 Constellation was produced from 1963 to 67, as replacement to the 36 Constellation, recognizable by the straight shear line, and then replaced by the fiberglass 38 Commander Express introduced in the fall 1964.

South West Florida Hit by Strong Low Pressure

A strong low pressure hit the South West Florida on Sunday seventeen December, with various streets being flooded in the area, a storm surge of one meter, over five centimetres of rain water, and winds up to Force seven Beaufort of intensity.  Punta Gorda which has still not recovered from Hurricane Ian from September 2022, was one of the most hit areas, along with Forty Myers, and Palm Beach.
Many weather forecast models are saying this and previous recent storms, along with a particularly unusually strong Pacific Hurricane Season are the affect of El Nino which finally has arrived.  The 2024 El Nino is forecasted to be a strong one, because of record heat in recent Summers, and also because it delayed by a year.
A classic Hatteras 53 Motor Yacht suffered the affect of the storm surge, with crew trying to resolve this.
This is a Chaparral 28/29 Signature which ended beached after breaking free from its mooring.
A first version Ocean Yachts 38 Super Sport also suffered the affect of the storm, and partly sank.

Tropical Storm-Force Winds Hits South Florida

Tropical storm-force winds hit South Florida and the Treasure Island on Thursday, sixteen November.  The winds started gusting at over fifty knots at around 04:00 hours of the morning with the storm calming down jest before 18:00 local time.  The storm caused a lot of damage in the area, toppled a lot of trees, destroyed tents, broke loose a few boats, and three hundred power cuts happening during the day.  In Jensen beach a catamaran ended slamming in a dock, while a ketch finished beached and aground and partly toppled into a seawall after it broke loose.  The picture above shows also a sport-boat-cruiser of about eleven meters in length which partly sank, and was hanging with the dock near Gateway Boulevard in Boynton beach.
The sport-power-boat-cruiser in the above sinking is a Formula 419 SR-1.  Designed by  Formula designer John Adams, the 419 SR-1 was introduced in 1991 as a flagship of the range, with triple engines for speeds up to seventy knots, and the trademark 24 degrees deadrise aft.  In 1997 the 419 evolved into the FasTech updated with a three-step hull, and produced till 2001.  Formula never really replaced the 419, with the 382 FasTech taking it's place as flagship,

Hurricane Norma 2023

Norma is the ninth hurricane of the Pacific 2023 season.  Forming from a low pressure appearing on the fifteen October to the Southern Coast of Mexico, which on the seventeen became a Tropical storm, and becoming a Hurricane the morning after of the eighteen. For the next 24 hours Norma will increase speeds from sixty to 112 knots becoming a category four Hurricane and causing chaos in the Southern Western Coast of Mexico.  Norma started to weaken on October 20, but made a second round of seventy knots winds on the 21st doing damage to the West-North-West of Cabo San Lucas, with a third round on the 23rd at Sinaloa near El Dorado.  After this Norma became a remnant low pressure.
Hurricane Norma has caused major damage to La Paz and Marina Cortez to the East of Baja California Sur, with about fifty boats reported lost or damaged.  Above is a photo screen from a one of the videos circulating on social media showing the damage to La Paz marina.  This video showed a few catamarans and sail yachts sank, with the above motor yacht looking like a Hampton 490 Pilothouse semi-sank, and other motor yachts showing damage to the bathing platforms and hull sides.
A video on YouTube by Your Saltwater Guide also showed a Cantieri di Pisa Akhir 30 S which was taken aground by the storms surge power.
While Alan Flores Ramos on Twitter showed the 2021 Ferretti Custom Line Navetta 33, hull #16 m/y Ricacha mostly sank vertically with its port side anchor out.  It is reported on some sources that Ricacha sought refuge in La Paz only for it to sustain damage in a collision and then sink.  The crew were rescued, with an operation to salvage Ricacha being underway.

Storm Babet

Storm Babet has made havoc in Britain, northern Germany and southern Scandinavia, with powerful winds, heavy rain and storm surges that caused floods, power outages, evacuations and disrupted flights, railway service and ferry lines.  Storm Babet made landfall on Thursday nineteen October, first arriving in the northern part of the United Kingdom, and continued making havoc in North Germany and Southern Scandinavia up till Saturday 21st October.  Gale-force winds whipped up storm surges on the southern shores of the Baltic Sea, breaking through flood defences in coastal areas in Denmark and northern Germany. In Flensburg, a German city just south of the border with Denmark, water levels rose more than two meters to the highest level recorded in a century.
Forming on the fifteen October Storm Babet also called Storm Viktor in Germany, is an extratropical cyclone which affected Northern and Western Europe, reaching speeds up to one hundred knots, and has caused nine fatalities.
So far we know that Storm Babet caused damage in the following German yacht marinas; Olympic port of Schilksee in Kiel, Damp, north of Eckernförde, and Wassersleben Marina in Harrislee near Flansbee causing damage to over 200 boats.  The storm in these harbours was caused on Friday twentieth October.

Liveaboard Sports Cruiser Ends Beached in Treasure Island Florida

A twelve meter Chris Craft sport cruiser ended beached in Treasure Island, Florida, when it broke it's swing anchored mooring in the Gulf near Caddy's, during a storm on the night of Wednesday eleven October.  The sport cruiser is a liveaboard for one person, who was not onboard when it all happened, but did see it from a distance and tried to paddle back onboard with no success, due to the strong current of the night.  The owner as the picture above has started digging in order to remove the vessel, before a notice of enforcement arrives.  After just over a month the Chris Craft sport cruiser was put on a trailer and towed away by the authorities on the sixteen November.
This Chris Craft in this beaching is a 412 Amerosport.  Produced from 1987 to 1990, the 412 Amerosport has an open plan layout sleeping four plus two and a single shower head compartment, and was standard powered by twin Mercruiser 454hp for speeds up to 27 knots.  The 412 Amerosport evolved into the 400 Express Cruiser in its last 1990 production year, same model but with more consverative graphics.  The Amerosport line from Chris Craft was introduced in 1987 with four 28 to 41 foot models, to compete with the Sea Ray Sundancer's who dominated the sales of the North American boating market in those years.

Regal Cruiser Lake Cumberland Night Cruising Ends Aground

An eleven meter Regal cruiser with two persons onboard, a man and a woman ended aground in Cemetry Island near the mouth of Beaver Creek, Lake Cumberland, Kentucky, USA on the night of Friday sixth October.  The Regal sport cruiser was night cruising at an important sustained speed, with part of the grounding being blamed for the lake being about six meters shallower to its usual standard.  The two onboard passengers where reported having light injuries during the collision grounding, while the sport cruiser sustained damage to all the running gear with a rudder pushing inside, and scratched and punctured the hull.
The Regal sport cruiser in this grounding is a 3860 Commodore model, produced from 2002 to 2007.  The Regal 3860 Commodore featured a two stateroom two heads layout, and was standard powered with twin 420hp petrol gas engines and or optional diesels for speeds up to thirty knots. Sportfish Cruiser Ends Aground in Portsmouth River

An eleven meter sportfish cruiser ended aground in Sandy Point Beach, Portsmouth River on the early morning of fifth October.  Reports say it was a foggy morning with very poor visibility when the grounding of the sportfish cruiser occurred.  Although some might say that the sportfish cruiser looks equipped with full radar and GPS equipment, so even in poor visibility this was not supposed to happen. Obviously in these cases quick judgement on social media is fast, but before a full story is known better be careful, considering that the sportfish looks to have drifted aground rather gently then going on it at a speed.
The sportfish cruiser in this grounding is a Stamas 370 Express, a model produced from 2000 to 2004 as an evolution of the 360 Express. The 370 evolution featured a raised bridge deck and a full transom design.  The Stamas 370 Express has a two plus two layout with a midships cabin which separated her from other similar sized sportfish boats.  The Stama 370 Express was powered by twin 370hp gas or 420hp Yanmar diesel engines, with the last giving speeds in the mid thirties.  The Stamas 370 Express was the flagship model when released and was replaced by the bit smaller 340 Express in the end of 2002.

Sea Ray Ends Grounded in Mississippi River

A ten meter Sea Ray sport cruiser ended grounded in Pool3, Mississippi river, Wisconsin side, near St. Louis on the morning of ninth September.  The case of the grounding are not reported, although the indications are for error in navigation, with the sport cruiser hitting some of the unmarked wing dams.  It is also possible that the sport cruiser was in a delivery following a sale seeing that it has no title on the back.
The Sea Ray sport cruiser in this grounding is a late nineties 330 Sundancer, the second generation series, modified from the previous with port holes replacing the view window on the super structure and the radar arch now forward looking.  The 330 was replaced by the 340 Sundancer in 2000.

Boat Aground in Policastro

A ten meter sport cruiser with five persons onboard ended on top of a reef near Policastro Bussentino, to the South of Salerno on the late afternoon of sixteen August.  The sport cruiser and the Neapolitan family was immediately assisted by Policastro Guardia Costiera, and the Sapri military squad.  A bit more complicated the safety of the sport cruiser which had to be removed with caution due to a breach in its hull bottom.  After some temporary repairs to the hull breach the ten meter sport cruiser was later towed to Policastro Busentino marina boat yard for repairs.
This grounded sport cruiser is a Galgiotta Camaro Even mt. 10,60 produced from 1987 to the end nineties.  The Camaro Even followed the styling of the larger Camaro Tris, and was powered by twin Volvo 200hp diesel engines on sterndrives. Replacing the CM Special , the Camaro Even was replaced by the more sportfish inspired Gagliardo 37 in year 2000.  Made in Naples, Italy Gagliotta is known for its fast deep-Vee seaworthy hulls, that received high praises even from the legendary Don Aronow.
