New Model: Viking 82SB

Since presenting the Sky Bridge option some ten years ago, Viking has always kept it part of the Enclosed Bridge family.  Meaning that a Viking with sky bridge was an Enclosed Bridge model with that option being ticked. Things have changed in 2024, as Viking is rightly now making the Sky Bridge as a different variant of that model. The Viking 82 Skybridge is the first of the new models, although on its website the SD model has appeared also on the 90, and now stopped in production 72 and 80 models.  The Viking 82SB, is an interesting model variant and deserves its own designation.  See it that if you like the salon-like features of an enclosed bridge but also want to run the boat from an open bridge occasionally, the 82 Sky Bridge model is for you, providing the best of both worlds. The elevated bridge’s port-side console has a fully equipped helm with a recessed black acrylic panel for flush-mounted MFDs. Guests can enjoy the view from a forward L-shaped lounge, with easy access to a forward refrigerated drink box and a sink.  This Sky Bridge also makes fish and tuna searching much safer and easier.

Project: Viking 50 Convertible

During the Miami boat show Viking announced and showcased the renderings for an upcoming new 50 Convertible.  The third generation 50 Convertible will be the first of a quadrumvirate of fifteen meter Viking's to come in the Open, the Sport Coupe/Sport Tower, and the Billfish sharing the same hull but different in the rest.  The 50 Convertible comes as a replacement to the third generation 48, which saw eighty boats delivered in the Convertible, Open, and SC/ST.  The 50 Convertible is set to debut for the 2025 Fort Lauderdale boat show, a model that shares design traits with the latest larger Vikings: flush foredeck for increased safety; modified upper chine and aggressive strakes for improved spray deflection and a dry ride, stylish feature lines on the hull, deckhouse, and bridge; and recessed salon windows highlighted with radiused perimeters. The flybridge features a streamlined walk-around center console with a recessed black acrylic dash holding two touchscreen Multifunction Displays. The captain has excellent sightlines to the cockpit, and a dropdown electronics box can be integrated into the fiberglass hardtop, just forward of another space dedicated for teaser reels.  A lounge with armrests and drink holders is integrated into the forward section of the console, with storage beneath. Additional padded bench seating is to port and starboard. Immediately to starboard of the helm is a refrigerated drink box. The 50's length-to-beam ratio has been optimized for maximum speed and a soft, dry ride.  To maximize strength and minimize weight, specific construction materials and methods are utilized to build the Viking 50. The hull along with all tankage and structural bulkheads are resin-infused to optimize the fiberglass-to-resin ratio, achieving exceptional strength.  Additional construction techniques, such as Light Resin Transfer Moulding, along with the incorporation of various core materials, with specific densities based on their location and the use of carbon fibre increase overall build quality and ensure industry-leading fit and finish. Significant weight savings have also been achieved with specially selected interior woods. Throughout the hull, a modified vinilester-epoxy resin is employed for blister protection and improved structural performance. The business end centres around the twelve square meters cockpit, which is equipped with large, insulated in-deck fish boxes that can be refrigerated. The transom holds a live well that doubles as a fish box or a place to store gear. Anglers have toe-kick space in every direction and rounded coamings for comfort. The boat is engineered for the installation of a Seakeeper 10 or 14, with the unit mounted in a dedicated space on centreline in the lazarette, protected by a watertight lid with compression latches.  There's a freezer under the mezzanine's lounge seat, along with a cooler beneath the step. On centreline, you have access to the engine-room. On the port side, there’s additional cooler storage and a tackle cabinet. The flybridge overhang provides shade. The cockpit also features a transom door with a lift gate, recessed stainless steel cleats with corner hawse pipes for easy line handling and power cord management. The coamings are fitted with four flush-mounted rod holders (with the option for more) and optional haunch rod holders. Accommodations Step into the salon, and you'll be delighted by its open-concept, contemporary design that accentuates the natural light flowing through the large windows. The interior's horizontal grain walnut can be ordered in high gloss or satin. In keeping with its clean, spacious styling, the salon features overhead strip LED lighting bordered by walnut. To port, you'll find an L-shaped lounge and a walnut cocktail table.  New to this size of Viking is a raised dinette, which provides excellent visibility outside and storage for rods in a slide-out drawer below.  Another convenience is the standard icemaker, located at the inboard end of the peninsula-style galley's countertop. There’s also a refrigerator and a freezer under the counter, each with two pull-out drawers. The galley is appointed with a stainless steel sink, a Miele four-burner cooktop and cabinet storage above, that includes a standard microwave oven. Viking interior designers are constantly striving to provide you with the utmost comfort while maximizing the interior volume. Depending on your choice of accommodation plan, you can comfortably sleep up to nine people on the 50. The master stateroom located at midships to port-side is appointed with a walkaround queen bed, and an ensuite head with a large shower.  A spacious forward stateroom can be appointed with either a queen bed or a crossover arrangement featuring a double lower bunk and a single upper bunk. The second guest stateroom, located aft on the starboard side, features upper and lower bunks and private access to the guest head, which is shared with the forward stateroom. Storage is plentiful throughout the staterooms, with cavernous compartments beneath the queen berths, hanging lockers and other cabinet spaces. The Viking 50 Convertible is to be powered by standard Man 1000hp or optional 1200hp engines.  Speed data is not yet specified by Viking says exceptional, so to the least this should be in the high thirties.

New Model: Viking 74 Convertible

During the 2024 Fort Lauderdale boat show Viking debuted its new 74 Convertible.  This new 22 meter sportfish yacht replaces the 72 model after 75 units sold and a production run of eight years.  The second generation 74 Convertible has some big shoes to fill, that is why she is in fact an evolution of the 72  rather then a revolution, with design tweaks improving comfort and space, from a larger cockpit, to a bit of a higher flybridge improving ergonomics, and more space inside.  This size extension gives the option in lieu of the standard three double cabins layout for four staterooms plus crew cabin for two at midships.  The fourth cabin replacing the tackle room to starboard.  There is also a few options in the 74 Convertible from a three berth cross-over berth forward, to an L-shaped saloon open galley or a C-shaped saloon.  The 74 Convertible is powered by seven engine choices from smaller Man 1550hp up to twin very fast 45 knots topping MTU 2635hp, which was the power plant as fitted to hull one.

Project: Viking 74 Convertible

Viking never stops and on the heels of the 82 Convertible’s introduction the past Spring and in celebration of its sixtieth anniversary, the New Jersey based sportfish yacht specialist is proud to announce another tournament champion destined for greatness, the second-generation Viking 74. The 74 Convertible follows the iconic Viking 72, a 45-knot speed demon that saw 75 hulls built and sold. The goal with this new model was to design and build a 74-footer capable of similar top-end and cruising speeds. The team, which has been working together for more than 25 years came through big time, introducing a series of refinements. For instance, the 74’s strakes and chines are aggressive for increased spray deflection and lift, and the boat’s length-to-beam ratio was dialled in for excellent ride quality. In comparison, the Gen I Viking 74, built from 2004 through 2008, had a top speed of 37 knots with twin 2000hp MTUs, which reached forty knots when the 2400HP engines became available. Today’s 74 has the advantage of more horsepower with the 2600hp MTUs and hull design improvements. In addition, it’s available with the Advanced Viking Propulsion System which utilizes struts and rudders with modified twisted shapes that minimize hydrodynamic resistance, improving performance. Building materials and methods are also chosen to maximize strength and weight savings, with the hull, tankage, and structural bulkheads all resin infused, optimizing the fiberglass-to-resin ratio to bring the build to its greatest strength. Other construction processes, such as Light Resin Transfer Moulding, and the use of a variety of core materials, with specific densities for their location and carbon fibre contribute to overall build quality and industry-leading fit and finish. Significant weight-saving gains have also been made with the use of specific interior woods. A modified vinylester-epoxy resin is used throughout the hull for blister protection and structural performance. As any sportfish its all about the cockpit and 74 Convertible will have a twenty square meters cockpit, what is 25 centimetres longer to that of the replacing 72’s. The business end includes two full-length insulated in-deck fish boxes with split lids to port and starboard. A single hatch on centreline provides excellent access to the available Seakeeper. The walkthrough transom door with lift gate is on the port side, and the raised transom fish-box/live well is offered in two capacities. There’s an abundance of storage in the mezzanine; to port side is a tackle cabinet, an ice chipper storage box and a refrigerated step box. Access to the engine-room is via the centreline mezzanine steps, and there are two freezer boxes to starboard. The mezzanine seating boasts premium outdoor upholstery and has dry storage underneath. Guests can relax in the shade provided by the flybridge overhang. Mezzanine air conditioning is also available. The 74’s flybridge is designed with a high platform helm, which provides excellent cockpit visibility for the captain. The walkaround center console’s recessed black acrylic dash holds flush-mounted multifunction displays. The helm is clean, streamlined and operator-friendly with dual radio boxes with split lids housing instrumentation and controls, a helm pod, single lever electronic controls and a stainless-steel steering wheel. Air conditioning can be added to the helm, as well, which accommodates three Release Marine helm chairs with teak ladder backs. The console’s forward section is home to an integrated full-length lounge with a standard freezer below. There are also standard dual freezers forward , a feature carried down from the 82 to allow separate storage of different baits and/or food. The forward flybridge is equipped with a convenient sink and refrigerated drink box. Seating modules to port and starboard each hold back-to-back lounges with storage underneath. Enter in the cabin and into the salon from the mezzanine through a port-side electric sliding door. The interior’s horizontal-grain natural walnut is available in satin or gloss finishes. The in-house woodwork features meticulous joinery that includes dovetail drawers. A large sofa to starboard includes rod storage below and is accompanied by a walnut hi-lo table. Directly across from the lounge is an entertainment center, with a TV that rises from within the cabinetry. Forward on the port side, the raised dinette includes a walnut table, wraparound seating and rod storage in a pull-out drawer below. The galley is offered in two configurations: The standard U-shaped layout allows for a larger wraparound lounge, while the optional open galley features an island counter and is open to the lounge on the starboard side. With either arrangement, the galley has two under-counter refrigerators and one freezer, all Sub-Zero with ample countertop space and a second dining area with a raised bar and three stools. Galley highlights include Amtico flooring, a Miele four-burner electric cooktop (with optional conventional oven), a stainless-steel sink, a microwave/convection oven, a trash compactor, upper and lower cabinetry and drawer storage. A pantry forward of the galley provides additional storage. The 74’s standard accommodation plan consists of four staterooms, each with an ensuite head with separate shower. The forepeak layout also features a standard rod and tackle room, located on the port side. The crew quarters can be accessed via a separate staircase at the foot of the companionway stairs or through a forward engine-room door. The spacious master stateroom features a king walkaround bed with storage underneath, two oak-lined hanging closets and space for up to a large TV on the forward bulkhead. A walkaround queen bed (with storage underneath) in the forward stateroom is standard, while a crossover arrangement (with a full-size bunk and upper bunk) is optional. The starboard and crew staterooms are appointed with upper and lower berths and hanging lockers. If maximum sleeping capacity is what you’re looking for, a fifth stateroom (with upper and lower bunks) is available in lieu of the rod and tackle room. The five-stateroom layout with the forward crossover arrangement provides berths for eleven people. The engine-room to be finished in Snow White Awlgrip for easier maintenance is a marvel of marine engineering. It’s equipped with chilled water air conditioning, ventilation and fire suppression systems, a pair of 29 kW generators with voltage and electronic frequency control and is engineered for the installation of omnidirectional sonar. Optional equipment such as water makers and water purifiers and ice machines are expertly installed in the engine-room as well. The standard SeaStrong seal-less pumps in our Centralized Seawater System reduce complexity and increase reliability and component longevity throughout the boat. The 74 is also offered with the Clearline System, which uses chlorinated water to prevent marine growth in seawater plumbing lines. Set to make her world premiere at the 2024 Fort Lauderdale boat show this fall, the Viking 74 Convertible is standard powered with twin Man 1550hp, with six other options which go up to twin 2635hp MTU's as fitted to hull One.. The Viking 74 will also be offered as an Enclosed Bridge model, with tuna tower or Sky Bridge option.

New Model: Viking 90 SB

In the early part of 2023 Viking launched its new 90 SB flagship, a 27 meters super sportfish yacht with all the birds and whistles.   A replacement to the 92 which debuted in the fall of 2014 and produced till 2022 sold in 21 units, of which sixteen where in the Enclosed Bridge variant.  The 90 is also the third in size Viking ever made if we add the 93 MY which sold in only one unit in 2017.  Following the introduction of Selective Catalytic Treatment Viking would have continued production of the non stop selling 92, but the new rules needed the New Gretna to go back to the drawing board and make a flagship with a 24 meter hull length.  The 90 looks all based on the 92 with an identical beam and will offer a five double stateroom layout with an owners master stateroom at midships.  A crew cabin with separate shower is located aft.  Beside the Sky Bridge version off hull one the 90 is also available in Enclosed Bridge or open Convertible version, with this being sold as hull number four and has started construction in the fall of 2022.  Available with three engines from standard Cats 1925hp, or optional 2433hp, and MTU 2635hp with these last fitted to hull one.  The 90 has so far sold in fifteen units after its debut at the Viking VIP preview in end January, and World launch in the Miami boat show in February 2013.

New Model: Viking 54 Open

The largest express-style yacht Viking has ever built, the 54 Open series consists of three models; the 54 Open, 54 Sport Coupe and 54 Sport Tower. The Open Series made its world premiere at last year’s 2021 Fort Lauderdale boat show with the Sport Coupe version featuring a custom radar mast atop a three-sided fiberglass deckhouse. A few months later, Viking showcased the 54 Sport Tower for the first time with the gorgeous FarNiente at the Miami boat show.  At the Fort Lauderdale 2022 in end October Viking completed the circle presenting the 54 Open which featured a custom Palm Beach tuna tower, and unlike the Sport Tower and Sport Coupe, this model has a three-sided wraparound windshield with space between it at the hardtop, allowing a more open-air environment on the command deck. The 54 O can also be delivered without a tuna tower as a sleek express yacht.  The 54 Open’s fiberglass windshield frame is designed and fabricated in-house at Viking adhering to strict tolerances, what is a single-piece fiberglass part perfect windshield.  Above is a shot of the show-bound first 54 Open in its final stages of construction, with a tower designed and fabricated at PBT in Riviera Beach, Florida. Atlantic Marine Electronics, another Viking subsidiary, has pre-installed the wiring for the tower electronics. The first Viking 54 Open also received a teak cockpit sole.  Back in New Jersey, the next 54 Open which will also be fitted with a PBT tower, is in the mechanical department ready for its powerplant of twin Man 1550hp and gyroscopic stabilizer Seakeeper 16 installations.

Project: Viking 90 Sky Bridge

Like with any of its models Viking proposes different versions on its platform, and so will be the case with its new upcoming 90 flagship model, which will replace I would say temporary the 92 after 21 units delivered.  Unlike the 92, the new 90 will have a load line of less to 24 meters making it abstain to Selective Catalytic Reduction rules which entered force in 2022.  Selective Catalytic Reduction units need further engine room space and redesigned layouts, with Viking being very vocal against the new rules to fit mandatory converters, and working a lot to delay the entry from 2020 to 22. The Viking 90 will offer a six stateroom layout, highlighted with a full beam owners stateroom at midships.  The Sky Bridge project will differ from the other standard Convertible and Enclosed Bridge versions for offering a fully equipped second helm station up top.  The Sky Bridge replaces the full-tower and makes it safer to reach then a Tuna tower helm, with the advantage that a fully fitted helm station can be equipped.  The Viking 90 is scheduled to debut in early 2023.

Robert T. Healey 1929 - 2021

Robert T. Healey Sr., the co-founder of the Viking Yacht Company who helped build the company into an industry leader and led the fight that repealed the Federal Luxury Tax on yachts in the early 1990s, passed away nine December at the age of 92.  Bob Healey Sr. and his brother Bill established Viking Yachts in 1964, and the company went on to become the largest manufacturer of sport fishing yachts in the world. But that success may have never been achieved without the determination and perseverance of Bob Healey. When a federal 10 percent luxury tax was imposed on yachts in 1991, thousands of people were laid off and hundreds of companies went out of business. Viking nearly went bankrupt, closed a plant in Florida and laid off all but 65 of its 1,500 boatbuilders.  Bob was instrumental in organizing a national, grass-roots campaign to fight the tax. He took the industry lead, organizing busloads of out-of-work boatbuilders to converge on Capitol Hill for demonstrations, and setting fire to a boat on a barge in Narragansett Bay as a highly effective symbol of protest. The tax was repealed 20 months later in 1993.  With Bill’s help, Bob privately funded the company out of his own savings, allowing Viking to tool up new models. The company came out of the gate running when the tax was finally repealed – and they never looked back.  Bob graduated from Camden Catholic High School, attended St. Joseph’s College in Philadelphia, graduating with a B.S. in Political Science, and earned a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He practiced law in Camden County, N.J., for 25 years before retiring as a senior partner in the firm of Healey, Mueller and Tyler to devote himself full time to business interests.  In the 1950s, his brother Bill joined Bob in the real-estate development business. Among other projects, the two brothers acquired and developed the Bass River Marina in New Gretna, N.J. In 1964 a small, local builder of wooden boats, Peterson-Viking, was having financial trouble, and the brothers agreed to buy the company, changed the name to Viking Yachts, and relocated the business to their property adjoining the marina. The boatbuilding business soon occupied much of their time, so the brothers sold the marina and concentrated on building yachts. Bob was the company lawyer, moneyman and Chief Executive while his brother built the boats.  Committed to their mantra to build a better boat every day, Bill and Bob pushed Viking to the pinnacle of their industry with more than 5,000 boats delivered. They successfully steered the company through the ups and downs of economic cycles. As Viking's Chairman of the Board for 57 years, Bob Healey Sr. diversified their financial interests into multifamily, industrial and commercial real estate, oil and gas exploration and development, and the financial management of the Healey family assets.  Together, Bill and Bob Healey achieved many milestones. In 1996, they founded the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA), a non-profit organization formed in 1996 to promote sustainable fisheries and a healthy marine environment. Viking has contributed well over $1 million to the RFA. In that same year, the brothers established Viking Sport Cruisers, a company that has been highly successful distributing British-built, high end cruising yachts, built to Viking's specifications, through its dealer network in North America. Bob, Bill and Pat received the Ernst and Young 1998 New Jersey Manufacturing Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Fifteen years later, the family would earn a second award from Ernst and Young. Ironically, the Healeys bought back Bass River Marina in 2002 and reopened it as the Viking Yachting Center.  They were inducted in 2003 into the National Marine Manufacturers Association Hall of Fame for their outstanding contributions to the marine industry.  In honor of their service and commitment to the marine industry for more than a half a century, Bill and Bob were honored with the 2019 IBI-METSTRADE Boat Builder Lifetime Achievement Award, which was accepted by his son, Bob Jr.  Bob received many more awards for his achievements, including induction into the NJ Marine Trade Association Hall of Fame and the Rowan University Milestone Award. Bob also channeled his financial success into philanthropic interests, which included building schools in impoverished areas of Mexico, and providing housing, medical assistance, education, food and clean water to the people of war-torn Sierra Leone through the Healey International Relief Foundation. A devout Catholic and product of Catholic school education, Bob brought his business skills to the challenges facing Catholic schools in the U.S. and formed the Healey Education Foundation and the Catholic Partnership Schools in Camden.  With his wife Ellen, Bob founded the Gleneayre Equestrian Program for at-risk youth. The program uses the powerful connection between horses and people to support learning, growth and healing.  For his philanthropic  efforts, Bob received the Lewis Katz Excellence in Education Award, the Beacon of Light Award, the Catholic Charities Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio Award for Leadership, an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Scranton University and the Shield of Loyola Award from St. Joseph's University.  Beloved husband of Ellen J. (nee Baldino), loving father to his seven children: Lizanne H. Jenkins (Thomas), Christine L. Healey, Caroline H. Adillon, L. Toland Sherriff (Robert), Robert T. Healey, Jr. (Bobbi), M. Alexis Iaccarino (Jonathan) and Leigh H. Hughes (Gabriel), and adored grandfather of his sixteen grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Louise L. (nee Lucas), and his two brothers, Patrick J. Healey and Edward J. Healey. He is survived by his brother William J. Healey, and many nieces and nephews.

Project: Viking 90 Convertible

The Viking 92 was arguably the greatest large sportfishing yacht of all time, with 21 boats delivered in seven years of production. The six-stateroom world-traveler merged convertible performance and fishability with megayacht luxury, proving that a Viking of its size could excel on the tournament circuit while providing the pinnacle of comfort. Driven by its mantra to build a better boat every day, here comes Viking again with another example of excellence in boatbuilding design, engineering and innovation. The legendary New Jersey boatbuilder is proud to announce the all-new Viking 90, a yacht that will redefine the capabilities of the luxury convertible sportfisher and become the new benchmark in the genre. The 90’s profile represents a synthesis of design traits from the 92, 80 and other modern Viking sportfishing yachts, as well as subtle motor yacht influences. Carefully placed feature lines, deckhouse windows and portlights with chamfered edges and Viking’s signature hull-side vents are just of few of the 90’s aesthetic high points. Viking will offer three models of the 90; Open Bridge, Enclosed Bridge and Sky Bridge, all utilizing a spacious six-stateroom accommodation plan highlighted by a full-beam master suite. The Open and Enclosed Bridge 90 can be outfitted with a tuna tower from Palm Beach Towers (PBT), and all three models can be equipped with a custom electronics, communications and entertainment package from Atlantic Marine Electronics (AME). Both Viking subsidiaries, AME and PBT ensure turnkey delivery. The cockpit and dual mezzanine stress a sense of togetherness with a focus aft – where the action is. From the salon, a 40-inch-wide electric-powered single door opens with a touch of a button. The upper mezzanine’s port side is home to an L-shaped aft-facing lounge with available air-conditioned backrest and a teak table. On the starboard side, there’s a versatile cooking and refreshment hub (with an additional aft-facing seat) that can be personalized to the owner’s liking with a grill and icemaker or refrigerator. A large lounge on the lower mezzanine looks upon the cockpit, with its shapely fiberglass module holding storage underneath and tackle drawers on each side. The mezzanine provides centerline engine access to the crew quarters and engine-room, and is also home to an oversized freezer (port) and two refrigerated boxes (starboard). The cockpit measures 224 square feet, with a 203-gallon transom fishbox/live well and a pair of full-length 103-gallon insulated in-deck fishboxes. Access to the Seakeeper 35 is provided by a single powered hatch on centreline, a watertight design introduced with recent Viking 80 demonstrator boats, and the cockpit sole is built with reinforcement for a fighting chair, rocket launcher or table. Viking owners and enthusiasts will be enamoured with the accommodations of the new Viking 90. The combination of interior volume, a flowing open layout and several design nuances create a fresh soothing ambiance throughout the vast living spaces. Stepping into the salon, a new horizontal grain natural walnut interior greets you with warmth and style. Interior doors featuring both horizontal and vertical grains as well as ebony inlays add to the visual appeal. Guests will appreciate the spacious lounge that begins at the salon door and wraps around the port side. A starboard-side entertainment center features a 65-inch pop-up HD TV. Forward, the large starboard wraparound galley is open to a raised U-shaped dinette to port (with rod storage below). The Viking 90 offers five guest staterooms, each with its own private head and shower, crew quarters with immediate access to the engine-room, a pantry with an additional crew berth and a day head. Spanning the 23-foot, 2-inch beam, the owner’s suite boasts a king walkaround bed, a walk-in closet, a dressing table, a lounge area, a full-size credenza under a bulkhead-mounted 65-inch HD TV and his-and-hers private facilities with separate access. The Viking 90 will make her world premiere at the 2023 Miami Yacht Show.
