Super Yacht Saved from Fire in Aventura Florida

Fire fighters from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to a 24 meter Lazzara super yacht which caught fire in Williams Island, Island Boulevard, Aventura, Florida on 0600 hours of the morning of Sunday seventh January.  Fire Rescue received a call from a nearby condo which reported that they heard an explosion first, and saw the yacht on fire some seconds later.  When arriving on the scene the Miami-Dade Fire fighters found a fire on the fore-deck of the yacht, with this controlled and put out.  No injuries where reposted with the yacht being unattended during the fire.  The cause of the fire are under investigation.
The yacht in this is fire is a Lazzara 80 SC model as produced from 2002 to 2006 to an inhouse design with interiors by Christian Delashmutt.  Lazzara build five 80 SC and twenty 80 Sky Lounge, for a total of 25 hulls of the series.  The Lazzara 80 SC and 80 Sky Lounge came out as a replacement of the 80, and evolved into the 84 in 2006.

Spencer Yachts New Web Site

Spencer Yachts from Wanchese, North Carolina presents its new World wide web showroom.  Paul Spencer got his hands in boat building in 1996 when he founded the company with his name in that year.  Like other custom sportfish builders from Carolina, Paul Spencer entered boat building from a charter captain career and out of necessity of building his next boat, replacing the getting tired ten year old 55 foot single engine charter vessel build by his father in law Sheldon Midgett in frame and plank wood.  Paul's idea was to follow in the footsteps of local Carolina captain Buddy Cannady who build a boat, kept it a year or two and sold it.  For doing this Paul mortgaged his home, and build his first shed without electricity and water, and in 1997 launched Spencer Yachts hull.one, the 59 feet sportfish yacht powered by twin 800hp Cat engines originally titled Sizzler, which Paul designed with help from Mike Lohr, and only kept for a Summer.  Hull two comes the following year, an order from the family who bought hull one, what will be a two feet bigger and more luxurious fitted sportfish yacht.  Up till 2000 Paul will build a sportfish yacht a year, but things will get busy from 2001, when the five boats a year average build schedule starts, making Spencer Yachts as the most busy of the custom cold moulded build sport fish yachts delivering over one hundred builds in under twenty years.  Spencer has since 1997 build boats and yachts from a 26ft semi-production centre-console, and custom builds from the twin outboard powered 37ft hull.71 to the 87ft hull.78 in 2012 and the 90ft hull.86 from 2014. Paul Spencer unlike most custom sportfish builders also likes to experiment with propulsion building both jet drives and IPS propulsion custom builds for customers.  His first IPS pod boat came in 2007, in the early years of Volvo's inboard propulsion system with the 43 Express hull.43 which was followed by seven other IPS pod hulls including the triple powered 70 Volvo hull.76 launched in 2010.  Spencer also entered jet propulsion in 2019 with the 50 Jet hull.104, which was followed by hull.222 63ft sportfish yacht in 2021, with both units reaching fifty knots top speeds.  Today Paul runs Spencer Yachts with the help of his children Paul and Cliff.  Spencer new website takes you around with the following buttons; Custom Yachts, Marine Services, Fabrication, News and Events, Media, Store, and About Spencer. Spencer Yachts is also in social media with bottom page button taking you to its; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube pages.

Cruise Liner Breaks Mooring and Damages Marina in Siracusa

Gale force winds followed by a tornado gusting fifty knots of wind on 12:50 hours of Saturday sixth January broke the mooring lines to the MSC Sinfonia cruise liner, with this ending on the Marina Yachting pontoons, Porto Grande, Siracusa, on the East side Ionian sea of Sicily.  With the collision MSC Sinfonia is reported to have sunk two boats, caused damage to other boats and yachts, and to the marina.  No one was injured in the collision, with the 275 meters, 58174 gross tonnage cruise liner needing four tugs to put her back in its place.  MSC Sinfonia was on a technical stop in Siracusa, boarded only by technical crew and without any guests onboard.
In the below photo we can see a Conam 52 Chrono and a Sacs Strider 45 Gran Turismo involved with the pile up at Marina Yachting, following the collision by the cruise ship.  Marina Yachting in Siracusa opened its doors in the early 2000s, and has accommodation for up to 150 boats and yachts.

Jerry Husted 1928 - 2024

Jerry Husted the Nordic Tugs founder died at 96 years old on second January 2024.  A pioneer of cruising tugs, Jerry Husted introduced the 26-foot Nordic Tug at the 1980 Seattle Boat Show, the origin boat of the cruising tugboat genre. During the energy crisis of the 1970s Husted concluded that powerboaters needed a vessel that wouldn’t cost a fortune to buy and operate, what was the company introductory statement. He built a 26-foot boat with a traditional workboat profile and introduced it as the Nordic Tug at the 1980 Seattle Boat Show. Powered by a 3-cylinder, 36-hp Volvo diesel, the boat had a range of 600 miles at 6.5 knots. The price was $29,900.  By the end of the 10-day show, Husted had sold 33 boats; by the end of the month following the event, he had orders for a total of 54 even though the price had increased to $39,900 after the show.  Nordic Tugs has since built more than 900 boats from 26 to 54 feet. Husted gave up the helm of Nordic Tugs in December 2007, although he remained with the company until three days before his eightieth birthday, in 2012. Known as a hands-on executive, he sea-trialed all but a handful of Nordic Tug models.

Classic Trojan Sinks in Pittsburgh

A classic nine meter Trojan partly sank on the morning of second January at North Shore, Pittsburgh, Pensylvania.  The Trojan cruiser partly sank only because it rested on the river bed which is just over a meter deep.  Following the sinking Pittsburgh authorities protected the sunk cruiser with boons to avoid pollution from spreading.  The Trojan cruiser was reported to arrive and moor in that particular spot only some days before it eventually sank.  This particular Trojan classic was reported sold in September 2023.
The Trojan in this sinking is an F-30 Sea Raider the full fiberglass version which arrived after 1974, as initially this series was build with a fiberglass hull and wooden super structure, launching in 1970.  The flybridge in the 30 Sea Raider was an option, to the hard-top express version.

New Model: Wally Why100

For the end of 2023 Wally ended it's fantastic year by launching the first unit of the Why100 in the beautiful Venice setting. The one hundred, an acronym for its gross tonnage volume rather then size is the small of the Why series, which debuted in 2021 with the Why200, and today features three models which start from twenty and go up to 29 meters in length.  For the WallyWhy100 Luca Bassani presented something different, a bridge to the Power series in design and target usage, offering a less volume focused product then the two other larger Why models.  A hard-top sport yacht with spacious accommodation and a re-invented and un-edited main deck layout, the Why100 is unique in this segment for the very forward helm station which extends the use of the main deck pushing the pilot house for over two-thirds of the length, and presents an exterior sun-lovers aft deck which offers the same spaces of similar sized yachts.  The design of main deck is also un-edited with a central circle dinette. Below the lower deck of the WallyWhy100 offers three double cabins with an owners full beam stateroom at midships, a VIP suite to port side, and twin berth guest cabin to starboard.  A galley with twin bunk berth crew cabin is located forward with a separate excess to port of the central helm station on the main deck.  The WallyWhy100 is powered by twin Volvo 900hp or optional 1000hp engines with IPS pod drives propulsion for top speeds up to 27 knots from the large power option.

Sport Yacht Ends on Sandbar in Perdido Key Florida

A sixteen meters Cruisers Yachts sport yacht started the year in not a good way, as it ended aground on the sandbar of Perdido Key, to the South West of Pensacola in Escambia County, Florida, on the afternoon of first January.  Many locals from the area complained that the sandbars of Perdido Key, with most of these becoming bars from small islets by Hurricane Ivan from September 2022 are not marked, making it tricky and difficult to navigate and avoid.
The Cruisers Yachts in this grounding is a 540 Express model, as produced from 2004 till 06.  The 540 Express was offered in two or three cabins layout and is powered by twin Volvo or Cat 715hp engines for speeds up to the low thirties.  Cruisers flagship model at release the 540 Express came as a soft evolution of the 5470 launched in 2002, and was renamed as 560 in 2007 before replaced by the 540 Sports Coupe in 2012.

Best of 2023

Some supply chain normality starting coming back in 2023, which allowed for the arrival of  out of the box evolutionary thinking models to come from the popular and those less known names.  Obviously supply chain delays and disruptions have been a headache for all boat and yacht builders since 2020, that is why some of these models have been in waiting and delayed for a year, or two.  For example the 2023 best of the year was announced in 2020 for a 2021 launch but ended launching in late Summer 2022.  A similar story comes from Pershing's first GTX range model, project presented in 2020 for an end 2021 launch only for it to arrive in mid 2023, and Sunseeker's Superhawk 55 announced in 2021 to arrive a year later but then launching in early 2023.

PowerYacht best of 2023 is the Holterman X-treme 105. I could tell about the innovation of the X-treme 105, from its eleven meter record tender carrying ability on a 32 meter super yacht, to its twelve squared meters which holds nineteen tons of water aft deck swimming pool.  But the most important note in the best of 2023, is that you do not need to be a corporate giant to make a product, in this case a futuristic explorer looking super yacht, full of innovative features which stands out from the crowd.  You just need a buyer with a plan, a builder interested in building it, and designers who listen and transform dreams into reality.

The others.

Albemarle 53 Spencer Edition. It's the first ever custom to production sportfish builder collaboration. Albemarle largest ever build brings custom features and looks as an off the shelf available production product.

Arksen 85. A UK brand with cross-over marketing into Apparel, Overland, and Marine launches its biggest explorer super yacht. Fully custom build of aluminium this is serious globe trotting with a range up to six thousand nautical miles in 27 meters of size.

Centuno Navi Vespro 16.70m. Marco Arnaboldi is a naval architect ambassador to jet propulsion, re-enters yacht building with Centuno Navi in 2022. Vespro is the debut model of Marco's new firm, a 57 knots fast yacht with a futuristic T-top and an extendable aft deck.

Coronet 35 Suncruiser. Coronet is a pillar in motor boating history, and in this third re-start shows respect to its roots and 21 Daycruiser classic model.  No two without a three!

Ferretti InFynito 90. The first Ferretti InFynito makes a clever re-use and planning of the fore-deck, it's stand out feature covered-open area which gives privacy yet full views.

Fratelli Aprea Lancia 52. In English Lancia is a launch boat, as used by mercantile ships of days gone by to drop goods and people to land. Fratelli Aprea Lancia is a centre console-sport yacht hybrid, with the looks of a Gozzo, and the stern of a down-East lobster boat.

Pershing GTX116. Announced as TO project in 2020, the 35 meters GTX is a super sport yacht from Pershing which debuts a new range rethinking exterior spaces. The first GTX is also Ferretti's Group first Asymmetric yacht.

Riva 82 Diva. The name carries it's weight, that is why this new Riva looks your traditional flybridge pocket super yacht outside, but then re-invents the stern with a beach sunbathing area that extends space with side drop-down bulk-heads.

Legend Rethought. Sunseeker Superhawk 55. The Hawk range, which debuted in 1987 with the 37 Tomahawk, has been Sunseeker high performance range for sport-powerboat-cruisers able to reach fifty knots or more of top speed with the big gas-guzzling power option. Things change and after twelve different models and 36 years Sunseeker re-invent the Hawk as a day-entertainer. The biggest ever Hawk has smaller wings but a bigger belly.

PowerYacht wishes to all its followers, friends, readers, and visitors a Healthy and Prosperous 2024 year.
