Engine: Cat C32 Acert 1925hp

Cat C-series, electronically-controlled, high-speed marine engines are recognised for their sustainable performance, combining high power, low emissions and state-of-the-art fuel consumption. At this year’s Miami International Boat Show, Caterpillar presented another high-performance rating for its C32 ACERT model used in pleasure craft applications. Produced to highest standards the Cat C32 ACERT is a vee-type, 12-cylinder, 4-stroke marine engine with 145 mm bore and 162 mm stroke displacing total 32.1 litres. With its new EPA Tier 2-compliant E-rating, this engine provides 1417 kW - 1925hp at 2,300 rpm. The new C32 ACERT rating with 1925hp is specifically designed for pleasure craft applications, has 15 percent more power than the former C32 version without ACERT technology. Introducing a smaller and more robust engine block, the C32 ACERT engine is designed to be particularly durable, reliable and fuel-efficient. It offers the latest Mechanically actuated Electronically controlled Unit Injection (MEUI) fuel system, Caterpillar’s latest ADEM A4 Electronic Control Unit ECU and responsive twin turbo-charging and after-cooling. In addition, maintenance and robustness have been improved for the C32 ACERT engines. All standard maintenance items are mounted on the service side for easy access. The gear-driven water pump is self-priming. A titanium plate heat exchanger with integrated fuel cooler offers extended durability. ADEM software, which precisely determines fuel delivery, air management and all other engine functions, has been modified for the increased power rating and EPA Tier 2-compliant emission levels. Multiple fuel injection inserts fuel into the combustion chamber in a series of accurately timed “micro bursts”. These features combine to provide lower specific fuel consumption, particularly at part load, and also reduce smoke and emissions while delivering reliable maximum power output. Improved performance from advanced Cat C-series engines not only means more power overall, but also better acceleration, more reserve and rated power available at a wider speed range. Needless to say for an engine with ACERT technology, the C32 ACERT operates virtually smoke free under steady-state operation as well as under acceleration.

Project: Beneteau 34 Swift Trawler

Beneteau presents the project for its third model and future entry level for its explorer type boat Swift Trawler range with the 34. Announced in Dusseldorf last January and presented also as a scale model during the show, the 34 Swift Trawler continues what we have seen with the previous models from the French builder, with US trawler looks, but also with accommodation layouts revolving an eye around European and Mediterranean usage. Looking very similar in the outside to the 42, the small Swift Trawler offers spaces associated with a bigger boat to its size. Its accommodation plan is a 2 cabin layout, with owner cabin to fore, a bunk double cabin to port side, and a complete shower head to starboard. On the main deck we have the main living area for the small Swift Trawler offering a saloon galley with a settee for 5 persons, c-shaped galley, and the interior all weather helm station to starboard. The extended flybridge as seen on the plan is the main surprise for its dimension, offering along the second helm station, and l-shaped settee also a tender stowage area. This is something unusual for a 34 feet cruiser. Engine choices has so far not been announced, but Beneteau did say that the choice is for a single engine with direct in line shaft propulsion, which according to the French builder will give the best economy but also the most stable ride to the 34 Swift Trawler.

Projects: WallyPower 125, WallyPower 55

After the launch of the 64 the past Summer, Wally continues to upgrade its Power range with projects for a 125, and a 55 designed to stand between the 64 and 47. Wally Power range has so far launched 6 models in the range including the deceased 70 replaced in 2007 by the 73, and has 8 other model in project stages including the WallyIsland 99 metre Super Yacht. The 125 Power, look similar outside to the 118 first model of this successful range, but offers much then sees the eye differences with a more comfortable 4 cabin interior, a sport bridge above the hardtop, and a more economic performance. Power is from twin MTU 16v4000 M93L 4615hp which will give a 42 knots max, 35 knots cruising, and an economic cruise of 30 knots giving a range of 600 nautical miles. The new WallyPower 55 completes the power range filling the gap between the 47 and the recently launched 64. The 55 model introduces the full-open concept: the boat is super sporty and aggressive featuring a huge windscreen that replaces the hard top, and surrounds the entire cockpit area. The innovative propulsion system is made of four engines Volvo D6 of 435hp each, coupled with the IPS600 to offer great manoeuvrability, and 30% increased performance together with 20% increased range. The predicted max speed is over 40 knots. The cockpit features two comfortable and symmetrical seating and relaxing areas, one on each side, completely sheltered by the windscreen, which if desired can can be covered by a bimini or by a hard top as an optional, sheltering the open areas from the sun. The vast aft “beach” of approx 10 squared metres offers a Terrace-on-the-sea feeling. Another innovation is the immense hydraulic retractable aft passerelle, that serves as boarding platform and swimming ladder depending on the position, like the one of the 118. This also serves also to handle and lift onboard a jet ski from the water. The interior layout features a salon, two or three cabins with en-suites depending the choice, a galley, and a crew cabin with en-suite. The WallyPower 55 is built in the new yard specialised in the production, located in Forlì, Italy and the first unit will be launched in the summer of this year.

New Model: Magnum 70 Lazzarini Pickering

Magnum launched its new 70, hull number 011, at the end of February. The boat, designed by the famous architects Lazzarini Pickering, is a big departure and turn around from the standard Magnum 70. She has no portholes but, instead, is outfitted with large skylights made of a special glass to bring enormous amounts of light into the cabin. These skylights automatically tint according to the amount of sun hitting them at any one time. This was designed in order to keep the interiors cool regardless of the sun’s position or strength, and to keep a comfortable temperature inside without the use of air-conditioning, thereby saving energy, something Magnum is committed to. This technology has been available for quite some time in the eyeglass market but it is the first time it has been used on a yacht. Other news is the central radar arch which extends a sun protection awning when desired, and the lines of the windshield have also been softened up versus the previous Pininfarina design. The boat, which has two cabins and a large master suite, was built for a private client who will enjoy her in the Mediterranean this summer. Equipped with the 2000 series MTU engines, each producing 2400hp, the new Magnum 70 runs approximately 61 knots in many sea states which normally keeps other boats in harbour, let alone touch high speeds. The owner bought her for the seaworthy Magnum trademark so that he could cross the Med in security far from land with absolutely no fear for his safety or that of his family.
