Motor Cruiser Burns Down in Trapani

A ten meter motor cruiser with thirteen persons onboard caught fire while being on charter on the morning of twelfth June.  The ten meter Italian build ArsMare cruiser was on charter duty navigating in Sicily to the South West of Trapani,  near the island of Formica when fire started coming out of the engine room.  A call for assistance was made, with military and Coast Guard responding immediately and taking to safety the thirteen passengers including of which where three kids.  With fire alarm on, the Italian Finance Police and Fire Fighters Squad went to the rescue of the motor cruiser, with little success and the boat succumbing to the flames and ultimately sinking.  The ten meter ArsMare cruiser was chartered for an excursion to the popular Egadi islands, which never happened.
The boat in the fire is an RS 31, a ten meter motor cruiser from ArsMare, an Italian boat builder which grew to fame in the late eighties and nineties with its medium sized fisherman cruisers.  The RS 31 was was one of ArsMare most popular models for its cruise comfortable interior accommodation and a free aft deck ideal for fishing.  The ArsMare RS 31 offered an interior for two cabins sleeping four below deck, plus extra two berths in a convertible dinette on the main deck.  The Ars RS 31 was shaft propelled and powered by twin Iveco Aifo 220hp, and 240hp.  The RS 31 was replaced by the more sportfish focused RS 33 ST in 1996.  ArsMare was located in Livorno, and was co-founded by Luigi Prosperi, who is also known for having managed Mochi Craft from 1990 to 1996, and founded Cayman Yachts in 1990.  ArsMare was sold to the Monaco Marine Group in the late nineties, changing the name to Ars Monaco after the sale.

New Model: Overmarine Mangusta 104 Rev

The first hull of the Mangusta 104 Rev, the innovative model representing the new era of Mangusta Maxi Open Line of super sport yachts, was launched the morning of 28th May. This is a super sport yacht that made the news even before hitting the water; indeed, the 104 Rev was moved to the launch venue at night, driving through the narrow streets of Viareggio and stirring the curiosity of many locals, who thus had the privilege of getting a preview of the first hull in the new Open line.  The Mangusta 104 Rev is a revolutionary yacht, currently the entry level in the iconic Maxi Open range, in which Overmarine has been an undisputed leader for over 35 years, with more than three hundred yachts built in this timespan. Thanks to the joint work of the Group’s Engineering Department and designer Igor Lobanov, this vessel’s sporty and slender lines preserve the Mangusta DNA, but reinterpret it in a modern key.  Hull one has been sold to an American client, who was charmed by the new Maxi Open range; a success proving that the American market is increasingly thriving and keeps an eye on the innovations introduced in the Mangusta fleet. All Group lines including the latest models, are now represented overseas.  Other distinctive elements on this cruiser are the wide glass surfaces flawlessly integrated in her powerfully aggressive profile; a true engineering masterpiece. These see-through surfaces result in outstanding visibility while also allowing the vessel to be classified in the BV and MCA classes for commercial registration.  Light pervades all interiors, not only on the main deck; where the cosy, sophisticated salon is surrounded by ceiling-high windows but also on the lower deck, which can accommodate up to ten guests in four cabins; full-beam master stateroom, a VIP cabin, and two guest cabins.  As is the case on each and every Mangusta yacht, the exteriors and interiors form a smooth, harmonious continuum, maximising the concept of lifestyle meant as an unforgettable onboard life experience. The owners and their guests will be able to enjoy maximum relaxation and privacy in the many areas available onboard, including among others the comfortable sunbathing area, located forward, and the sundeck, which is seamlessly integrated in the profile and unravels around the radar arch, resulting in an essential, assertive look. Seakeeper gyro stabilizers allow her to deliver impressive performances and comfort both when cruising, even in choppy seas, and at anchor.  Hull one is to be delivered to her owner by the end of July. The next, available for sale, is scheduled for delivery in summer 2022.

Project: Cayman F580

Cayman continue to upgrade its line and the company which was reborn in 2017, has been a success story.  Here Cayman is showing the F580 project, and as most of the new projects which the company shows in recent times is currently under construction in Italy, and set for launch in Summer 2021.  The Cayman F580 is a flybridge motor yacht coming from a design of Ferragni, who presents a sweet looking seventeen meter motor yacht, which in the rendering strikes a balance of modernity without exaggerations.  The Cayman F580 will offer a main living on the main deck with astern galley layout, while the lower deck offers a three double cabins three heads layout.  Exterior entertainment areas are three; aft deck, flybridge, and foredeck.  The Cayman F580 will be powered by twin Man 800hp engines.

New Model: Nor-Tech 560 Sport

Nor-Tech present its new flagship, the 560 Sport, part of its Center Console line up. A semi custom offer the 560 Sport, is offered with various options open or closed bow, and larger or smaller cabin. An unusual feature in the Nor-Tech 560 Sport is the only 12-foot beam which allows for trailer travel without the hassle of escort vehicles.  But be sure to have a strong car for this as she still weighs sixteen tons.  The Nor-Tech 560 Sport is powered by quadruple 550hp Cummins which allows for top speed up to seventy knots and a cruise of fifty.  The Nor-Tech flagship is also available with outboards called the 550.

Project: Otam Custom Range 115

Following in the wake of the award-winning first unit in the Otam Custom Range the 35m Gipsy, designed by Tommaso Spadolini, , the Ligurian shipyard now present another fully engineered 115-foot proposal. However, the only thing the two projects have in common is their length overall, with this new design arriving as one of the fastest alloy super sport yachts on the water capable of reaching 44 knots.  The exterior lines by BG Design Firm, the same studio behind the new Otam 70 HT, are inspired by the aeronautical and automotive worlds to reflect the brand’s racy DNA. Design details include the chromed ventilation vents in the transom and the air inlet on top of the hardtop.  The deep-V hull has been developed by Umberto Tagliavini Marine Design to provide excellent seakeeping, comfortable entry into waves and high speeds. Extensive Finite Element Analysis nsures a rigid hull that is not prone to flexing or twisting, while Computional Fluid Dynamics serve to optimize performance and handling at sea.  Clients can choose between a 3-engine configuration with MTU 2600hp engines and a KaMeWa waterjet central booster for a top speed of 44 knots and a cruise of 32, or twin units of the same engines for a top speed of 35 knots, cruising at 28.  The four stateroom standard layout comprises an airy, open-plan salon and dining area behind the wheelhouse on the main deck where the extensive glazing is designed to provide panoramic sea views, even when seated. There are two ensuite guest staterooms on the lower deck, a large VIP stateroom and a full-beam master stateroom amidships, together with a gym or SPA or a big pantry for best service on board. Otam is to build what Clients desire and request with limitless solutions can be designed the reflect a Buyer’s preference in full.

New Model: Bering B77

The first Bering B77 explorer, was launched at the Bering Yachts facility in Turkey. This is the first of four launches in the Antalya Free Zone planned by Bering Yachts for 2021, including the launch of a Bering 70, Bering 92 and Bering 76 in the second half of the year. As a semi-custom project, the first B77 has been conceived as the perfect long-range voyager with enough power, supplies and entertainment for a family of intrepid travellers. Designed in-house by Bering, this steel-hulled yacht blends a classic exterior with the most up-to-date specifications. Inside, the three-decked Veronika is roomy enough to accommodate six guests and up to four crew, although she can also be sailed shorthanded. With a massive 170 GT of volume, she outperforms most other yacht brands below 24 metres. The launch of the heavy displacement B77 was facilitated by the brand new 560-tonne capacity travel lift provided by the Antalya Free Zone marina. The first Bering B77 will undergo sea trials before transferring to Australia to start high-latitude exploration cruising.

Project: Pershing 6X

Pershing present the 6X project.  A restyling of the successful 62 model which the company launched in 2013.  The 62 is one of the most successful Pershing's, and was also itself a development of a model which born in 2005 as 56 model, then developed as 58 in 2010, 62 and now in 2021 redefines itself as the 6X.  The 56 was also a hot seller selling seventy units in a production run of five years, making it the second best sold Pershing ever behind the 50/50.1 model.  The Pershing 6X  expresses the boldest and most daring side of the brand’s character, the side that always appeals to people who love excitement on the water. Compact but in no way incomplete, it packs all the best of the brand’s leading-edge technology into a compact form factor. As all Pershing since 1985 the 6X is again a design of Fulvio de Simoni, with the Ferretti Group engineering doing the naval architecture and the rest.   Pershing 6X has an eye-catchingly sleek and streamlined appearance, with exterior styling that shares the same family feeling as the other Generation X models. The new yacht turns heads with its highly aerodynamic profile and large glazed surfaces in the hull that flood the lower deck with natural light.  The main novelties include style features that clearly reflect Pershing’s approach to design in recent years, further improving functional and comfort-related design goals without affecting outstanding performance. They include the new styling of the big aft sun pad, the carbon and teak table in the cockpit dining area, and the chaise longue with reclining backrest positioned forward.  The 6X though is the most conservative of all X and the only one not featuring the wings which join the top of the hard-top with that of the shipside, a feature Pershing introduced with the 70 in 2014.  An important new feature on the main deck is the helm station, made up of a dashboard with two 19-inch monitors, carbon fibre control panels and an electro-hydraulic steering system. Also available is an innovative joystick coupled to the surface drive with various advanced operating modes, including ‘easy handling’ for ground-breaking manoeuvrability in ports and confined waters. A large sunroof opens over the dashboard to take cruising enjoyment to the next level.  The first Pershing 6X unit has a layout with three cabins - owner, forward VIP and starboard guest - and three bathrooms with separate shower. The guest bathroom, which can be entered both from the cabin and the lobby on the mezzanine, also acts as day toilet. On the left side of the hull is the galley, strategically positioned to benefit from various sources of natural light, including a ceiling window. The version for the American market has two cabins; owner and VIP with a living space replacing the guest cabin.  Both versions have a crew cabin entered from the cockpit, with a single bed and integrated bathroom.  Among the other novel features are new rectangular portholes that look even more like real windows.  The materials used for the interiors of the new 6X are in perfect Pershing style, with extensive use of plain and lacquered wood for the furniture, parquet floors, Mastrotto and Poltrona Frau leathers, and mirrored panels in the owner’s cabin. The lighting system features new horizontal LED bars in the ceiling that match the decor based on alternating smooth and undulated surfaces.  Pershing 6X confirms the outstanding performance standards set by the brand since the end nineties with a top speed of almost 48 knots and a cruising of about 42 knots, with a pair of twin Man 1550hp.

Becoming Too Exclusive

It is a pity to see in recent years Magnum Marine being mostly a service yard in Florida.  What used to be the most exclusive name in the Nautical World is now renowned mostly as a legend.  Yes Magnum still builds a boat a year, and the company has also launched the Sport 27 model a couple months ago.  But this is far away from the successes of the past, where with the 53 model the company sold over fifty units and till the end of the nineties was among the most sold sport yacht above fifteen meters.

So what went wrong with Magnum in the last decade or shall we say two decades.  I think one of the biggest mistakes is that Magnum has become to difficult in selling boats and has outpriced itself out of the market.  Yes a high end boat like Magnum cannot be cheap, and it is fair for it to be priced at the top end of the price range.  It is also normal for it to be a very exclusive product for the few.  But sometimes in all these things one has to strike a balance.  

We can look at the rise of custom high end sports fisherman in the last two decades; Bayliss, Jarrett Bay, Spencer, all with nice order books of three to five boats a year.  Are they priced competitive? Yes, compared to themselves but still more expensive to that of a production sportfish yacht.  A mirror  success is that of Italian builder Otam.  Otam strikes directly at Magnum as it is a direct competitive product, which has been doing very well. Consider that Otam has sold six of its 80 model, including the custom 85 GTS off shot from the same hull.  Magnum has sold only two, of its 80 with the first delivered in 2000 and the second in 2008.  I think the preparation of the Italian yard in actually serving the client for his custom yacht is one of the reason of the success.  Also Otam is not afraid to search in other market segments as for example they did with the SD35 in 2016.  Of the performance orientated yard only Alfamarine did something similar in 2003 when they delivered the fully custom 140.  

To be fair Magnum was not afraid to offer different products in the past and the 35, 38, and 40 used to be offered in flybridge and sportfish versions, and the 53 was also delivered in a couple custom flybridge units as well.  

Magnum is trying to relaunch itself in recent months, a dealer overhaul has just happened and the company has finally launched the long announced Sport 27 model.  A second unit with outboard power is reported under construction, and a plan for an electric power zero emissions version are in advanced stages.  The company has also showed plans for a fully outboard powered 44 Banzai model.  With the 27 Magnum seems to be more looking at its early Don Aronow past, rather the Theodoli one of high end offshore sport cruisers and yachts.  Question comes automatic if this is the direction Magnum should really take.

Canados Nearly Sinks in Castellammare di Stabia

A 26 meter Canados super yacht hit a reef outside Castellammare di Stabia, to the South of the Gulf of Naples on the early afternoon of 30th May.  No one was injured in the accident, the Canados super yacht was lucky to have find assistance and was later towed to a shipyard for repairs.  The damage is reported to be of minimum average entity, though the 2021 season might have to be called off for the super yacht.  The towage operation involved a big barge with crane and a tug boat on the same day, and was completed on late evening.   
The Canados in this accident is an 86 model, a success story for the Cantieri Navali di Ostia, selling in 46 units in a production run of thirteen years.  The Canados 86 was born from the 82S with the first unit of this sold to famous Formula One drive Giancarlo Fisichella in 2002.  A smaller offshoot 80 model using the same shortened hull was also made. The Canados 86 was a semi custom 26 meter motor yacht with a four double cabins layout, and two crew cabins. Possibly calling it semi-custom is a bit short as viewing of these super yachts have always showed one to be different to the other. Power was from Cat, Man, or MTU engines from 1400 to 1800hp with speeds reaching 33 knots with the larger engine option.

Hatteras Acquired by White River Marine Group

Sunreef Wins UIM International Award

Sunreef Yachts has won the Union Internationale Motonautique Environmental Award. The shipyard’s in-house engineered solar power system has been voted as the most innovative green motoryacht technology. Sunseeker Famous Five Premiere

Sunseeker is delighted to officially reveal the Sunseeker ‘Famous Five’ in a magnificent, all-new display of the Manhattan 55, Predator 55 EVO™, 65 Sport Yacht, 88 Yacht, and 90 Ocean together for the very first time off the coast of Dorset, England. The five new models dominated the waters as they sailed to Studland Bay in perfect formation against a breath-taking sunrise.  Revealing not one but five new models reflects the extraordinary pace of product development and a feat never before seen in the company’s history. To celebrate their arrival, a special guest and friend of the brand, actor Hugh Bonneville, recently visited the boat builder in Poole to support a very special launch video. The sheer expanse of Sunseeker’s presence, with its legendary shipyard set against the backdrop of the town’s historic quayside made for an ideal filming location.  Hugh commented: “A few years ago, I joined the Sunseeker team at the London Boat Show and quickly came to understand that this company is so much more than a brand - it's a global family. Tiara Lands Best Industry Product

The recently launched tiara yachts 48 ls was recognized by boating industry as one of the 50 top products of 2021. The top products program annually selects the marine industry’s most innovated products and services to recently hit the market based on their impact on the industry, innovations and how they advance the product category, or in some cases, create a new segment of its own.  The 48 LS, the largest outboard-powered vessel tiara yachts has ever built, expands upon the legacy of the luxury sport series, combining the outdoor amenities of a day boat with the onboard accommodations of a weekend cruiser.  Exclusively built and engineered for the Mercury Verado v12 600hp engines, another 2021 top product award winner and highest-horsepower outboards in production today, the 48 LS can reach a top speed of 60 mph. the triple v12s are combined with the tiara yachts integrated electronics package, including Garmin marine navigation, for unprecedented control and performance.


Viking Wins Marlin Madness

Congratulations to the Viking 55 Walk West on their win in Marlin magazine’s Marlin Madness. It’s been a long road with 64 seeded battlewagons fighting it out in four regional divisions but in the end, it was a Viking that “walked away” victorious. Owned by Riley Rhodes, the Viking earned their spot in the mix for their 2020 Texas Legends Billfish Tournament win. With captain Raleigh Morrison at the wheel, Justin Waight landed a record-breaking 737-pound blue marlin – the largest to ever be weighed in Port Aransas. “It was epic and euphoric,” Riley said. “We knew it was a big fish, but we didn’t know it was that big.” Great job to all the teams that competed and thanks to all of you for voting Viking to the top spot!

Viking at Louisiana Gulf Coast Billfish Classic

Viking went one, two and three at the recent Louisiana Gulf Coast Billfish Classic. The Viking 61 Devotion, above, released four blue marlin to win the Top Release Boat division. Captain Jason Hallmark put angler Brandon Rayborn on a pair of blues, and Matthew Parson and Josh Tice each added a fish to the tally. C-Student, a Viking 66, took 2nd Place Release Boat on time with three blues. The Viking 62 Contrapption was right behind them in 3rd Place with a trio of blue marlin. Scott Cooper, fishing on the Viking 80 CE, weighed the 2nd Place Tuna with a 127.8-pound yellowfin.

Viking Dominates The ShootOut

Talk about domination! In Skip Smith’s The Shootout – Production vs Custom, anglers on Bob Genord’s Viking 80 Miss Victoria released five blue marlin, seven whites and a sailfish to claim Top Billfish Release Boat. Colton Resor released eight of those fish for the Top Angler honor. Gioncarlo Ratti, fishing on Ricardo Cilloniz’s Viking 72 Anakalea, weighed the 2nd Largest Blue Marlin. The Heaviest Mahi went to Viking 62 Reel Life angler Mike Espinosa with a 34.2-pound fish. The Abaco-based invitational tournament saw 142 billfish releases in three days of fishing.

Viking Vaccine Program

Viking is proud to have hosted its first COVID-19 vaccine clinic with over 200 employees receiving their first dose of the Pfizer inoculation. In conjunction with AtlantiCare, Viking’s Health Services turned our multi-purpose room into a finely tuned injection distribution site. A second clinic is planned in two weeks with additional dates to be scheduled at both the New Gretna and Mullica facilities. Viking has worked hard to slow the spread of COVID-19 and now we're stepping up our efforts to do our part to help end the pandemic.  “In my 32 years at Viking, our vaccine rollout to our boatbuilders through our Health Services department and AtlantiCare is the most rewarding and significant program we’ve accomplished. Our employees are the most important asset of our company and we must do everything in our power to make sure they are healthy,” said Viking’s Executive Vice President Drew Davala.

All eyes in the sailing world turned to the Italian Riviera last week, where the Regate di Primavera – Splendido Mare Cup marked the explosive return of Maxi racing to the Med. Held in the sheltered waters of the Gulf of Tigullio from 5 to 9 May, the invitation-only event gathered some of the world’s most prestigious sailing yachts.  And none more so than the towering elegance of the Wally fleet, which was represented in style at this year’s event. Kauris II (24.31m) and Ryokan 2 (24m winner of the coveted Compasso d’Oro International design award) showcased the yard’s enduring aesthetic appeal and evergreen design, where clean lines, perfect proportions and performance all combine to create emotions that only Wallys can.  «Now more than ever, people are appreciating the value of owning a yacht. Now known as the Regate di Primavera - Splendido Mare Cup, the event has been running almost non-stop since 1980 against the backdrop of the town known as the “Pearl of the Mediterranean”. Last year naturally saw a hiatus due to the pandemic, but Wally owners have been eager to restart racing and are supporting this year’s maxi events.  Wally is also doing its bit to bring these magnificent yachts back to the race course with the return of the exclusive Wally Class. Counting among its number some of the most iconic sailing yachts of the last four decades, the Wally Class fleet runs from 24 to over 50 meters in length and includes some breathtaking recent deliveries that define the state of the art in performance, interior fit out and sheer flair.  Wally Class events will unfurl majestically over the course of the next six months.
