New Model: Nord West 430 Flybridge

Nord West will launch a brand new 430 Flybridge motor cruiser at the boat show in Gothenburg taking place from the 2 till the 10th of February. The yard is well known for its production of high quality boats and will now launch a new, slightly larger powerboat to the multi prized 420 with the same high standard, smart design and luxurious comfort that can be expected from the Orust production builder. The 430 will feature the latest in technology installed: twin Volvo Penta IPS engines with joystick control for easy manoeuvring and through a touch of a button or the intuitive DPS system holding the boats position through a series of GPS signals. Nominated as the ‘Motor Boat of the Year’ in both 2007 and 2008 the Nord West 420 has been the inspiration for the now bigger sister together with the 430 SportsTop, which is the yards latest newest model with its successful sports design.  For the first time the yard will now present the new Nord West 430 Flybridge in the same generous hull as the SportsTop and with the remarkable seagoing capabilities and low fuel consumption of the famed 420.  To put it short the 430 hull is a tweeking and slight improvement of the 420 praised underwater shape.  The yard would also like to highlight improvements they have been working with such as reduced sound levels and vibrations. Much of the equipment onboard which normally is extra options on most other manufacturers are in fact standard on all Nord West models. This makes the Nord West 430 Fly on of the most comfortable boats on the market today. The 430 Fly represents the first new model that has been developed since the acquisition of Najad and the interior design will demonstrate how the merging of two strong brands lift each other to new levels of perfection in both design and technique. Smart solutions and spacious storage facilities and a fantastic craftsmanship is the hallmark of this yard. The owner of the yard, Mr. Benny Martinsson, who stands behind the design together with the yards own and very capable development team, have put emphasis on the social space in the cockpit, saloon and on the flybridge. Well sized cabins with more natural light invites for a more comfortable and harmonic atmosphere, and at the same time the new Fly is developed for an active boating life where you can feel comfort for a very long time. Power from this new Nord West model comes from Volvo 370, 400, and 435hp units in both stern drive or IPS pod propulsion.

New Model: Riviera 63 Enclosed Flybridge

Riviera launches the new 63 Enclosed Flybridge with a raft of engineering and design enhancements based on its predecessor the 61 and the updates on the recent 75 flagship. Riviera  describes the new 63 as a luxurious and highly capable long range offshore vessel, with many popular design cues taken from the fleet’s prestigious flagship, the 75. The new 63 features a galley positioned central to the party, a cockpit that is an extension of the live-aboard space inside, a master stateroom that is bathed in light and fresh air, an enclosed flybridge that serves as a sky lounge, and refinements to the hull that further enhance performance and sea keeping ability. The new galley is positioned aft, adjacent to the saloon bulkhead, and separated from the large sociable cockpit space by a hinged awning window and full tinted glass door. The result is an extension of light and space from outside in, with guests easily able to converse with whoever is in the galley. Opposite the galley to starboard there is a bar area with ice maker and fridge set under ergonomically raked flybridge stairs, with solid teak treads nested on flawless tig-welded stainless steel supports. A special feature of the saloon bar is an electric lift glassware cabinet which retracts into the varnished cabinetry while under way, yet rises to the occasion at the touch of a button. Forward of the bar there is a spacious U-shape lounge and dinette with seating for twelve well positioned to take advantage of the large TV mounted on the forward dash.  The very large main saloon is bright and airy, with 360 degree tinted windows and offering views from every seating angle and position. The new 63 has incorporated social seating into the cockpit, which is no longer the sole domain of the sports fisherman.  The cockpit now doubles as an alfresco dining experience, with optional opposing fore and aft facing mezzanine seating either side of a solid teak table.  The practicalities of a sport fisher with fully optioned fighting cockpit are enhanced with features like below deck self-draining fish bins, game chair mounting plate solidly glassed into the cockpit floor, and recessed toe kicks. An extensive options list covering rod holders, live bait tank wells and outriggers ensures the full versatility of the 63.  Overlooking the cockpit is the spacious enclosed flybridge, featuring forward helm and aft docking station.  The enclosed flybridge features a hinged awning window and glass door that bolt open to bring outdoors in and unify the space. Wrap around seating to port features folding arm rests with functional storage underneath and a drop down dinette table.  To starboard there is a wet bar with bottle and glass storage.  The aft docking station is located aft to the starboard side of the external flybridge door with excellent visibility of the cockpit and aft quarters of the boat behind. There is an option to upgrade to Palm Beach single side mount engine control levers, which are a favourite with sport fishermen. To port an aft-facing lounge accommodates two people.  Below deck's is a standard four cabin layout sleeping seven in the standard version, with the owners stateroom located to portside midships and featuring large big view windows.  The optional three cabin layout is available with extra space absorbed by the VIP guest cabin, to include a private lounge or a writing bureau. In engineering terms the 63 retains its original shaft drive configuration, and base power is twin 1015hp Caterpillar engines.

Improve-it = Cerri 102 Flying Sport

The year 2012 ended in the best possible way for Cerri, with the sale to a Russian owner of hull number 3 in the 102 Flyingsport line. The Cerri 102 hull number 3 Flyingsport represents a true revolution in the open yacht sector for the shipyard, where innovation and modernity have always been core values and guiding principles.  While this yacht's outer lines are the same of her sister’s, the concept of this new version is extremely innovative and takes to extremes the "FlyingSport" philosophy thanks to the owner's true ingenuity and its flawless interpretation by the creativity of the Cerri team.  The FlyingSport line introduced the concept of a fly bridge in open crafts as back as in 2004 with 86 model sold so far in over ten units.  This latest Cerri 102 now embodies the ultimate evolution of such a philosophy, no longer featuring two pilot stations, but only one on the fly bridge and replacing the second, on the main deck, with an innovative owner area that continues below deck with a really impressive private wellness area. From the highly panoramic cabin with glass sunroof, an internal staircase leads to the spacious wellness area, conceived as an "open air" circular "glass tube": a magnificent relaxation area with Turkish bath with chromotherapy and a sauna. Adjacent to the spa is the children’s room with changing top and a bed for a staff members, which thus completes the master suite.  The under deck night area, aft of the spa, has also been thoroughly rearranged: it now features two more VIP cabins with double bed and private head, which can be accessed via the staircase from the main deck salon. This night area is characterised by very spacious volumes and large windows offering a beautiful panoramic view.  The pilot station and the dining room are located on the fly bridge and are sheltered by a hard top especially designed to allow closing the sides and including an electronically operated sunroof. A Jacuzzi, located aft of the dining area, adds the final touch to the main deck.  Besides her innovative fly bridge, this yacht can also boast two pleasant outdoor areas: the aft cockpit on the main deck includes a comfortable sunbathing area and a dinette, while at the bow the wide lounge area with circular sofas is ideal to relax and chat while enjoying the utmost privacy. Two crew cabins with separate access and a galley fitted with all necessary equipment make up the service areas, while 2 MTU 2600 HP engines and the ZF Searex surface drives push the yacht to a cruising speed of approximately 30 knots with peaks of 38.

A Good Start

January 2013 in my mind looks better to that of 2012, thanks to the resurgence of the German economy in recent years and for having one of the largest boats shows on the planet take place in this period at Dusseldorf.  What happens in Germany should change the fortune of at least some production builders, and give signs for a solid year ahead.  Another good sign is also that some European economies look in a better position to how they where a year ago.
Could 2013 be the year when the boating industry settles back and starts growing up?
It is very difficult to say. There is still two problems which still challenge the market, the over abundance of offer and competition which is not a bad thing to customers, and too many used boats for sale in the used market.
The German Dusseldorf boat show is always a very interesting venue thanks to the connection it gives to the North South of Europe and the different boating cultures these represent.  In recent years we have also seen the resurgence of the Dutch, these offering some impressive medium large sizes models, most of which are build in steel and some in alloy offering a semi custom approach in around the fifteen meter size as standard.  At this moment in time these Dutch builder represent the most interesting part of the European boat building community, thanks to a touch of classic flare, nice looks, and a very high standard of fit and finish. It will be interesting to see how customers will  perceive these builders in future years.

Admiral Tecnomar Announces Acquisition
Admiral Tecnomar, Italian company leader in the project and construction of large luxury yachts, announces to have completed the acquisition of Nuovi Cantieri Apuania, company active in shipbuilding, from Invitalia, the Italian National Agency for attraction of investments and enterprise development of Ministry of Economy and Finance. As a result of this action rises The Italian Sea Group – one of the biggest conglomerate groups in Italian boating. Three different hubs belong to this group: Admiral Tecnomar - hub of luxury yachts and sail; NCA - hub of high-tech value shipbuilding industry; NCA Refit - active in refitting for large ships and yachts. Contextually to the acquisition, Admiral Tecnomar presented an industrial plan characterized by three development routes: The consolidation of core business of mega yachts in aluminum and steel. The development of activities in shipbuilding placing the attention on high-tech constructions. The development of the particularly promising business of refitting and service for large ships and yachts, in partnership with high-qualified international brokers, collaboration that Admiral Tecnomar has been conducting for a long time. In virtue of such an industrial plan, the actual occupational levels will be preserved thanks to the engagement in maintaining all 150 workers within the next two years. Furthermore, new investments in the NCA area are expected for about 8 million Euros. The company is today in expansion and has become in a few years a reference point within the luxury boating sector. dmiral Tecnomar is pleased to announce the sale of a new 35-metre displacement yacht of the “Classique” custom series. Built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the “Classique 35” features 5 staterooms to accommodate 10 guests in extreme comfort and is due for delivery in summer 2014. The brand Admiral characterizes yachts from 35 to 80 meters of high-class and prestigious features whereas the brand Tecnomar yachts from 30 to 49 with features of sportivity and high-performance, combined to a highly refined design. Despite the economic results obtained from the former properties, in the last three years Admiral Tecnomar registered a stable sales volume, which today attests 25 million Euros and a significant improvement of indicators which mark the positive operative management. In detail, from a loss of 10 million Euros in 2008, the 2011 counts a profit of 1 million Euro; the net worth transformed from a negative situation of 8 million Euros in 2008 to a positive change of 5 million Euros in 2011; the EBITDA, which in 2008 was negative for 6,3 million Euros, in 2011 has reached the positive goal of 4,5 million Euros.

Brunswick Announces Plans to Exit Hatteras and Cabo
Brunswick Corporation has announced that its board of directors has authorized the Company to seek a buyer for its Hatteras and CABO brands of motoryachts and sportfishing convertibles. This action reflects decision to exit the sportfishing convertible category and to concentrate resources in the yacht segment on remaining brands, Sea Ray and Meridian Yachts. When completed, this action will also contribute to the goal of a break-even or better Boat Segment in 2013, even if the larger sterndrive/inboard fiberglass markets do not improve said Brunswick Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dustan E. McCoy. The current plan assumes that the eventual purchaser will retain both the physical plant and the talented workforce of Hatteras/CABO. During the sale process, which we seek to complete in an expeditious manner, Hatteras and CABO will maintain ongoing operations, and we will keep our employees and dealer network informed of our progress. As a result of this decision, the Company expects to record charges in the range of $70 to 80 million, a majority of which will be recorded in the fourth quarter of 2012. Brunswick purchased Hatteras Yachts in 2001 and CABO in 2006. Both are based in New Bern, N.C.

CRN Celebrate Launch with 3000 People
Great celebrations involving 3,000 people including institutional representatives, VIPs, the Shipyard’s employees, the entire Management of the Ferretti Group, and many citizens (to whom the Shipyard was exceptionally opened) were held this morning in Ancona for the launch of the new flagship CRN 129 “Chopi Chopi”, which - with its 80 metres of steel and aluminium - is the largest pleasure vessel ever built by CRN and one of the biggest ones ever produced in Italy. CRN is the Ferretti Group’s Shipyard specialising in the construction and sale of fully-custom and semi-custom megayachts in steel, aluminium and fibreglass ranging between 40 and 90 metres in length. The M/Y Chopi Chopi is a megayacht, entirely built at the Ancona Shipyard, whose value exceeds 80 million Euros. It is the 129th pleasure vessel built by CRN, which in 2013 will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary and is thus celebrating a really historic moment: this yacht has indeed broken the previous record of 72 metres set by the “Azteca”, which was launched in 2009 and, until yesterday, was the largest yacht built so far by CRN. The building of Chopi Chopi required approximately 660 thousand working hours. A large number of local suppliers was resorted to for its construction. Both the architectural firm in charge of the yacht’s exterior lines and interior layout - Studio Zuccon International Project - and the one that took care of interior design and furnishings - Studio Laura Sessa - are Italian, confirming the value of this megayacht and its being a world-class, entirely made-in-Italy product, bound to represent Italy’s outstanding shipbuilding industry all over the world. The launching ceremony, open to the whole city of Ancona, was attended by CRN’s Chairman and CEO, Lamberto Tacoli, the Chairman of the Ferretti Group and the Weichai Group, Tan Xuguang, and the Ferretti Group’s CEO, Ferruccio Rossi, as well as by several public authorities including the Chinese Ambassador in Italy, Ding Wei, the President of the Marche Region Council, Gian Mario Spacca, Ancona’s Mayor, Fiorello Gramillano, and many leading Italian industrialists and entrepreneurs, headed by the President of Ucina-Confidustria Nautica (the Italian Marine Industry Association), Anton Francesco Albertoni. .

Horizon Ranks in Top Ten Shipyards
ShowBoats International recently released their December 2013 Global Order Book update, which reports on yachts 24m (80 feet) and above currently on order or under construction around the world, and Horizon is pleased to announced we ranked 10th in the top ten largest shipyards with 15 yachts under construction totaling 449 meters (1,473 feet) in length. Of the 15 Horizon yachts currently being built, seven yachts are 30-36.4 meters (100 -120 feet) and eight yachts are 24.9 -28.5 meters (81-94 feet) - the average length of yachts under construction among all shipyards in the Global Order Book is 40.63 meters (133.4 feet), but the 24-40 meter (80 - 132) size range occupies the largest segment of new orders. Taiwan also ranked number six in the top 10 yacht manufacturing countries, showing 41 yachts/1,255 meters (4,117.6 feet) under construction. Horizon has maintained a position in the 2013 Global Order Book top ten shipyards list for the past few years, a feat we are proud of in today's global economic conditions, and we fully expect 2013 to bring a wave of new orders for Horizon's luxury yacht collection.

Mulder New Yard Update
Work on our facilities in Zoeterwoude Rijndijk is nearing completion. The large overhead doors were installed a few weeks ago and the first dry dock is now in use. The outer façades and rest of the exterior of the new yard are completely finished and work is in process on the interior. This includes the installation of machinery and cranes, the finishing of the canteen and sanitary facilities, and the furnishing of the office. Moreover, the 100-tonne crane, which will later be used for launching yachts, was recently taken into use. The moving of the machinery from the old to the new site has also started. It is expected that the new yard will be fully operational on 1 February 2013. While the yard construction is still in its final phase, the first hulls have already arrived at the new facility. The hull of the Mulder 98 Flybridge was taken into the dry dock at the end of last year, and the hull of the new Mulder 75 Wheelhouse arrived last week. Both yachts will have an aluminium hull and superstructure, and will be the first to be completed at the new facilities. The hull of the special edition Mulder 94 Voyager will also arrive at the new site later this year.

Nordhavn on Big Screen
The documentary The Other Side of the Ice produced and directed by Nordhavn owner Sprague Theobald, will make its premier in New York next month. The film follows Theobald and his able-bodied crew (including son, stepson and stepdaughter) aboard his Nordhavn 57, Bagan, as they attempt to transit the Arctic's infamous Northwest Passage. The journey began as a cause-driven adventurer’s calling to not only fulfill the failed mission of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition of 1845, but also shed light on the environmental and political impacts a proposed industrialized invasion of the strait would have on the native people and endangered Polar Bears that inhabit the region. As the film plays out however, the drama shifts focus on to Theobald and his crew, who not only face the dangers of being trapped in large ice fields but also the perils of onboard unrest. Theobald has spent five years on his labor of love, from filming to painstaking editing of the film and is thrilled about its impending debut. The official opening of The Other Side of The Ice happens March 8 at The Quad Cinema in New York City where it will run for a week. Nordhavn president, Dan Streech, had the opportunity to screen an advance copy of the documentary earlier this week. Streech, along with other P.A.E. management, spent months prior to departure discussing the Arctic exploration with Theobald – with very real intentions of accompanying him. But circumstances thwarted those plans so he was forced to watch and follow the adventure online with awe, envy and often great concern. And when Bagan successfully and safely completed its mission, an overwhelming sense of relief and pride filled Streech, who identifies Theobald as a close friend.

The book that served as inspiration to the owners of Pacific Asian Enterprises, Inc., a foundation to the concept of the Nordhavn 46, has been re-edited for a third time and is now available in hard copy form. The iconic Voyaging Under Power written by Capt. Robert Beebee introduced to the world that global passagemaking – once believed to be a luxury only enjoyed by sailors – was accessible and achievable in the right power boat. The book was first published in 1975 and it revolutionized the powerboating industry. It encapsulated the thinking of Jim Leishman, vice president of P.A.E., who applied his own similar philosophy to the creation of the Nordhavn brand of long-distance trawlers. In 1994, the publishers of Voyaging Under Power tapped Leishman to re-edit the book, after Beebee had revised it himself years prior. And now the fourth edition of the book – which is often referred to as the passagemaker’s bible has been published. This time revised by Dennis Ulmstod, a long-time boater who has spent decades cruising on long-range cruising power boats, including a successful crossing of the Atlantic on his Beebee Passagemaker called Teka III.

Ocean Alexander Celebrates 35 Years
Alexander Marine, the manufacturer of Ocean Alexander yachts, is celebrating 35 years of boat building. Alex Chueh established Alexander Marine in 1978. He started building boats before then, but formally created Alexander Marine upon meeting renowned naval architect, Ed Monk, Jr., and established a model line exclusively designed by Monk for Alexander Marine. This practice was a pioneer in the industry during this early stage of boat building in Taiwan. In the past 35 years, Alexander Marine evolved from building small trawlers in the 40’ range to building megayachts such as the Ocean Alexander120. Now, under the leadership of Alex’s son, John Chueh, Alexander Marine is continuing on the path of advancement; implementing design and material changes to stay competitive in the ever-changing boating industry. To celebrate this meaningful anniversary, Alexander Marine has created a generous sales promotion with complimentary upgrades for all models in 2013. The 35th Anniversary Sales Promotion runs from January 1 to December 31, 2013 and is applicable towards all new Ocean Alexander yachts ordered from the factory through an Ocean Alexander sales office.
