Project: Absolute 43 Fly

Absolute continue to upgrade its line of boats and follows the ongoing success of the open first and hardtop today sport cruiser and yacht models by putting its focus on the new motor cruiser yacht flybridge line up. The company has already shown project renderings for a 50 Fly a couple of weeks ago, and now presents the second of the flybridges which will be the 43 Fly. What will surprise on the 43 Fly is the amount of space the project team managed to create on a boat just measuring over thirteen metres overall, with sleeping berths for six guests, and two en-suited heads. The layout and plan of the accommodation below of the 43 Fly can in numbers compete with that of the bigger new 50 Fly set to launch also in the fall of this year. The 43 Fly can also be accessorized with optionals that make life on board easier like a high low hydraulic bathing platform aft, and a rigid hard top over the flybridge. Power for the 43 Fly will be from a twin Volvo IPS500 or optional 600 choice. Again Absolute uses the Volvo pods to power another model which with the 43 and 50 Fly will power nine out of ten Absolute models. A big faith from the Italian boat builder to the Swedish engine and propulsion manufacturer.

Project: Austin Parker AP42 Sport

Basing itself on the lines of the just launched Austin Parker AP42 Open, the Italian builder present a new sport cruiser interpretation with the project of a Sport version. This model actually shows what a thin line, or to sum it better a different superstructure can do to change the original traditional hull into a new Sport Cruiser interpretation. Also designed by Fulvio De Simoni the AP42 Sport looks very sweet with a muscle interpretation given by the high free board of the hull. Apart the change of super structure the AP42 Sport will keep much of the elements of the AP 42 Open lobster design like the wooden toe rail, and the same interior lower deck with a master suite to fore, galley and L-shaped settee. The main deck will also be the same but in this case this area is dedicated for a full sunshine or canopy covered open air environment.

New Model: Horizon 66 Bandido

The popular Bandido series built by Horizon in Taiwan and marketed by Drettmann in Germany introduces the new 66 model to ocean Explorer Yacht fans. The new 66 Bandido was introduced world wide during the recent Dusseldorf boat show and is the smallest and third model of the range. As the bigger and previous Bandido 90 and 75 models, the 66 follows the combination of a trawler design with a yacht style interior which generates a hard to find concept for owners who want rugged working looks outside combined with a luxury filled modern interior. This keeps with an Explorer Yacht philosophy in terms of safety, comfort and fuel efficiency while enjoying long range voyages. The ample interior with two decks and a flybridge creates a spacious and comfort accommodation area, which is available in a three or four cabin layout. Baglietto announces the launching of a new 42m Wide Body fast super yacht christened Lucky Me. Entirely built in aluminum, it has a length of 42 metres with a beam of 8 metres. First sample of the Wide Body line, it represents an important event for the yard that enriches its own range with this new fast model. The external lines and the interior design are characterized by the creativity of long time Baglietto collaborator architect Francesco Paszkowski who present an elegant and contemporary decor characterizing the taste of this yacht, enhanced by alternating wood essences, teak and white painted oak for the walls, and from the use of precious and unique materials throughout. The generous spaces of the convivial areas, the attention given to the distribution of the same and the wise use of the illumination on board, all define the vocation of Lucky Me for a comfortable and relaxed life onboard. The great spaces dedicated to the owner’s area have been conceived, for instance, as to have the superstructure designed full-beam and positioned to the extreme bow on the main deck in order to guarantee maximum privacy. The master suite is divided into four generous areas: conversation and study, both equipped and furnished full height in teak, the sleeping area equipped with a vanity space, a dressing room and the bath with shower and wellness spa as well. Project: Galeon 385 Open

Galeon presents the project of the 385 Open, mirroring the hardtop version below the shear line, in the cabins and the practical department, but having its topsides which say head in the air driving experience. Like the 325 before it, with the 385 the famous Straszyn Polish builder and British designer Tony Castro redo what they did in 2008 and follow the demanded HT for Hardtop project with a sportier 385 Open version. The 385 Open gives a younger feel to the overall looks versus the HT version with Tony Castro following a family feeling in this new bigger model which mirrors the Galeon line but mostly the smaller 325 Open sister. The 385 indeed does look similar in the lines, the long sports side window, forward looking radar arch, the windshield which comes from the moulded structure, and an aft cockpit deck which uses half the length. For the remaining the 385 Open is exact as its hardtop sister for what is the accommodation with a well laid flush aft deck cockpit outside, and a two cabins, two shower heads interior. Propulsion will be a stern drive solution offering good speeds and best economy.

New Model: Cayman 60 HT

Following what was presented a year before with the 75 HT flagship, Cayman unveils the similar smaller sister with the new 60 HT model. Cayman did not want to complicate matters for the second model of the HT range, giving again design job to Carlo Trezzi. Previous to the 2008 presented 75 HT launched last year, all Caymans have been designed by Nuvolari Lenard. For the 60 HT Trezzi again gave Cayman a sporty elegant conservative look and just as the 75 HT abandons the bits of sportfish influence of the smaller models. The Cayman 60 HT is a fully enclosed all weather coupe sport yacht with patio door aft and rigid hard top. Below it offers three fully en suite cabins, with the owners stateroom being a full beam mid ship layout. A single crew cabin with two berths is located aft. Project: Cabo 44 Hardtop Express

Scheduled to debut this fall, the 44 Hardtop Express project is a new design style for Cabo. The integrated hardtop signifies a next step in express design evolution for the Southern California Adelante boat builder, here utilizing a rigid three sided enclosure to offer better protection from the elements, improved visibility, and greater comfort on the helm deck. Below deck, the interior also marks a turn around offering a luxurious space equal to the Cabo 45 Express it will replace. The most dramatic difference in the layout is the addition of either an optional second stateroom, or an angler's room. This extra space allows for easy interior storage of fishing gear or the privacy of a second stateroom away from the master. Another intuitive touch is the placement of a full length galley counter against the aft bulkhead, making access to appliances easier while creating more floor space in the living dining area. The master stateroom and shared head are forward of the living area and offer the comfort and amenities that discriminating owners desire. Like every Cabo the design for this boat began in the cockpit to make sure that it meets the demands of serious anglers. Fish boxes, a tackle center, and bait well in the transom are all standard, and new mezzanine seating provides a comfortable perch when watching the spread. Like many of the latest Cabos to be introduced in the past few years, the 44's foundation is a Michael Peters designed hull. From there, the propulsion design, electrical systems, and attention to detail is executed in the same manner that built the Cabo reputation for a rugged and efficient build. Cabo and Michael Peters present an innovative design with luxurious appointments. The hard top design solution for the 44 Hardtop Express project gives also a great appeal to cruising enthusiasts that may have never considered a Cabo before, while continuing to meet the demands of its core market serious offshore anglers.

New Model: Aguti 20M

Aguti is a very Italian Latin sounding name, but this is a new German brand with capacity to build up to forty metres which sets sights on the high sphere of the market presenting its first 20M model. Designed by part yard owner Andreas Grieger, the Aguti 20M was built on Lake Constance in Germany taking fifty thousand hours to complete. For his first model which is a sixty five feet sport yacht Grieger went to traditional modern looks with a long teak covered flush fore deck saying classic big open yacht, a stern which reminds of speed boats of the early twentieth century, and a hard top integrating neatly with a traditional shaped curved wind screen. Apart from having a sliding movement the hard top of the 20M can also move vertical up down allowing fresh air to enter the cockpit and at the same time keeping shade. But the first Aguti model does not want to be special on looks alone and some functional equipment. The 20M wants to offer a unique product in the core, and this it does with the mahogany Kevlar construction, and a patented exhaust system which surpasses year 2014 regulations. The Aguti 20M also offers incredible all year round accommodation thanks to a patio door main deck, having a day galley, L-shaped settee, and central helm station. Down below we have a three double cabin lower deck plan, with owners suite to fore, C-shaped saloon, and a galley. Power for the 20M is twin MAN 1100hp which give a 32 knots top speed. Although more powerful engines and the tank tested hull shape do allow for speeds up to 50 knots.
Technical Data:
LOA - 20.1 m (65.9ft)
Waterline Length - 15.45 m
Beam - 5.50 m
Draft - 1.55 m

Fuel Capacity - 4000 l
Water Capacity - 1000 l
Accommodation - 6 berths in 3 cabins
Engines - 2 x MAN V10 1100hp
Propulsion - shaft propulsion
Speed - 32 knots max with MAN V10

Project: Kadey-Krogen 52

Kadey-Krogen announces the addition of a completely new project to its fleet of pure full displacement trawler yachts with the 52. Building on the ten year success of the Kadey-Krogen 58, the 52 offers many of the same design elements like a raised pilothouse and spacious living areas. In keeping with the company’s adherence to architectural integrity, the 52 is constructed with entirely new tooling as opposed to the very common industry practice of simply stretching the hull of a smaller model. Like every Kadey-Krogen yacht for nearly twenty years, the 52 will be built at Asia Harbor Yacht Builders in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The fully covered aft deck gives away the live ability of the 52. A feature of every Kadey-Krogen, showing space in the saloon through welded aluminum weather tight doors. Moving forward and to starboard is the gourmet complete galley with a full-size refrigerator. Like her larger sister, the 52 will have a weather-tight Dutch door providing direct access to the galley from the starboard walkway. Port side of the galley are the steps up to the pilothouse with household-like standard risers and treads plus a rock-solid banister for a safe and sure grip at sea. The pilothouse on the 52 accommodates dual helm chairs, rare for this size, allowing both captain and mate great visibility. Owners have the choice of a two or three cabin arrangement, with the master stateroom forward or amidships. The two cabin arrangement enjoys the utility of a large dedicated office space. Two heads are standard with any configuration, and both heads boast an enclosed stall shower. The 52 will be offered in both single and twin engine configurations and will feature Kadey-Krogen’s exclusive counter-faired keel, a design the company pioneered on the 58. This innovative keel design imparts a counter rotation of water flowing into the propeller, canceling some of the propeller induced water rotation. The result is straighter water outflow and improved forward thrust which generates better fuel economy than that of conventional keel designs. Standard power will be provided by a single John Deere continuous duty 231hp engine, with a twin John Deere 121hp available as optional. With 5300 litres of fuel, range is expected to be in excess of 3,000 miles at 7 knots with a top speed of 9.5 knots. Interestingly the company took a customer friendly approach in announcing the Krogen 52 with the builder contacting current owners to see if they were interested in the project, and then showing the a set of plans at the Trawler Fest in Fort Lauderdale. This system seems to have worked well for Kadey-Krogen receiving reservation for the first five hulls. Tooling for the Krogen 52 is expected to complete in late fall of this year, with the first hull arriving in the United States in summer 2011.

Improve-it = Riviera 5800 Sport Yacht

Riviera’s popular 5800 Sport Yacht takes design to another level with the first of the series to be delivered with lower galley and alternate saloon option delivered to its Sydney, Australia owner last month. The lower galley option is ideal for those who enjoy formal entertaining, as the separate galley provides a discreet area for food preparation while the saloon features two huge lounges on either side of the boat, to the port the plush lounge wraps around the dinette table, while the starboard side includes a huge U-shaped lounge complete with pop up TV at the end, perfect for chilling out or conversing with guests and comfortably seating 12 adults. Since the 5800 Sport Yacht’s world release in May 2009, this latest Riviera model has achieved sales in Italy, Auckland, Perth, Sydney and the Gold Coast. Building on the success of the impressive standard model, the lower galley option is tipped to be popular with those who enjoy entertaining providing the family chef or crew a private gourmet galley complete with quality appliances including electric induction three-element cooktop, two drawer fridges and two drawer freezers, a convection microwave oven, dishwasher and solid-surface benchtop, a stainless steel underslung sink with mixer tap and generous storage. The saloon windscreen serves as a massive skylight above the lower galley providing an abundance of natural light while an opening port-hole at eye level gives the chef a good view and plenty of sea breezes. Riviera’s new product development concept design manager, Neil McCabe said customers were fascinated with the 5800 Sport Yacht’s power, precise handling, smooth ride, low engine noise and striking modern look. The Riviera 5800 employs Volvo Penta IPS propulsion, an integrated system of marine diesel engines and steerable drive units mounted under the hull with twin counter rotating, forward facing, propellers. This system offers easy handling and manoeuvring even in tight situations and a joystick for easy docking. Volvo Penta IPS also offers up to 30 percent better fuel consumption than traditional shaft drive systems. Three Volvo Penta IPS 600 diesels rated at 435hp each are standard. This latest galley down delivered 5800 Sport Yacht was also fitted with two aft IPS joysticks docking stations located to port and starboard side of the cockpit.

Projects: Gamefisherman 60 Flybridge, Gamefisherman 58 Express

After launching its 48 Flybridge in the fall of 2009 Gamefisherman present two important new projects which expand the size of the line of this Miami custom boat builder. Above is the rendering for the 60 Flybridge which if launched today will be Gamefisherman's biggest build to date and its current flagship. The 60 Flybridge will have an interior with a split level saloon which offers a relaxing C-shaped saloon, dining table, galley and bar area. Below are the sleeping quarters which on the standard plan offer three double en-suited cabins. The owners suite is located to port midships. Construction as for all the Gamefisherman will be cold molded with Epoxy resins. Power will be from twin 1200hp MAN engines.
The second Gamefisherman project is the 58 Express, which shares many features with the two feet larger Flybridge. In fact the beam and draft are identical, and the length as the model designation indicates is just two feet shorter. Apart the measurements the concept of the 58 Express is a different one, being an open Express yacht with large outdoor spaces. But as any respected Sportfish machine the 58 Express welcomes you aft into a large free aft cockpit with a central fighting chair dedicated to the angler. Moving to fore and two steps up from the battle zone you are taken into the comfort area in the upper deck, which features two opposing L-shaped settees, and a central helm station. The standard lower deck plan goes for an L-shaped saloon, galley, guest cabin with two bunk berths, guest shower head, and the owners en-suite stateroom to fore. Power has been so far not been announced but I would imagine a similar set up to that of the slightly larger 60 Flybridge sister.

Improve-it = Nor-Tech 80 Super Performance Sport Yacht

Nor-Tech presents its hull number 2 of the 80 Super Performance Sport Yacht flagship presented in 2008. This second version commissioned by a long time customer in Sarasota shows Nor-Tech very custom approach in its flagship model. This second hull is a variation of the first 80 offering an open cockpit layout giving the look and feel of a true performance boat and less of a traditional yacht. A new cabin floor plan has also been incorporated below decks. Without the roof and heavy yacht decor materials this second version will come in lighter. This time the boat will also be powered by bigger Cat engines producing 1850hp each versus the 1635hp of hull one. With less weight because of the open format and more power Nor Tech is expecting a top speed in the mid 50 knots range for hull number two of the 80 Super Performance Sport Yacht.

But please note owners operators that the Abacus 86 does have a waterline length of just under 24 metres, meaning it can still be driven by those in possession of a yacht master licence. Hull number one different to the renderings displayed a hard top on the flybridge, with a forward looking radar arch. The Abacus 86 offers a spacious four cabin layout with owners suite to mid ship, VIP to fore, and two guest cabins in between. Crew quarters with lobby and three berths is located to fore. Project: Tornado 38 Cruising

Tornado continue to update its 38 and after the Flush Deck and Sport versions revisits the model again by presenting the new Cruising project. As the name says it, the new 38 Cruising will offer more accommodation inside and outside. Designed by the Milan H3O firm the 38 Cruising is the ultimate update, completing the circle of this legendary Tornado model. While on aesthetics alone you would think the 38 Cruising is apart the cockpit layout the same to the Flush Deck or Sport versions a close inspection will tell you there is much more. While looking very similar the new 38 Cruising deceives the eye getting an increased cockpit floor height of twenty centimetres, and the fore deck extended further aft by sixty centimetres. Both these changes occur in order to get extra space for a double cabin to mid ship. The 38 Cruising will also offer three interior layout plans. While all will have two cabins to fore and mid ship these plans distinct themselves for a minimal or more traditional style choice. Just take your pick, is the name of the game here. The cockpit now is also changed for having everything to the opposite of the Flush Deck model, helm to port side, L-shaped settee and sun pad to starboard, and access transom door to port. Power will be a stern drive Volvo D4 or D6 choice, which should give a 40 knots top speed with the bigger engine option as on the other versions.

New Model: Portofino 11 Fisherman

Italian boat builder Portofino continues to present variations to its 11 line series, presenting the new Fisherman model. The Portofino 11 was presented in 2008 with the Fly version, a year later was the turn for a Coupe model, and now in 2010 is next for the new Fisherman. Similar to its sisters in everything concerning the hull from shape to the IPS propulsion, and in the lower deck accommodation for four, the new Fisherman looks different when you see its topsides thanks to the lets go fishing Tuna tower. Apart from a second helm station the tower gives better visibility for locating the prey, outriggers, and extra places where to put your lines. The main deck now fully open on the sides and aft is also added with extras dedicated to the fisherman not found on the 11 Fly and Coupe models, like ice maker, 220 litres freezer, and a 200 litres live bait well. Thanks to Volvo IPS electronics the 11 Fisherman also features a slow speed, and electronic anchor modes. Both of these very usual instruments for the dedicated angler.

New Model: Baia B50 Cinquanta

Baia B50 has been a myth of the eighties, and one of the most successful hulls of the Naples boat builder for that period. Thanks to the good results achieved in competitions like the victory in the Venice Monte Carlo Rally Raid in 1990, where an average speed of 58.5 knots and a top speed of 75 knots were reached the B50 made its success a part of motor boating history and was one of the Baia models which made it become a status symbol brand. Introduced in 1983, the B50 marked an important turning point for Baia production not only for being at the time there biggest hull, but for Don Aronow the American Legend designing the project. Aronow will always be recognized as the boat builder and racer who revolutionized the industry of powerboat racing worldwide. The old B50 also achieved an immediate success getting appreciation even in the difficult US market for its high performances, wonderful comfort expressing the concept of absolute open, and distinctive Baia style combining the pleasure of High Performances with total freedom and enjoyment. The new B50 Cinquanta builds on the past of this regenerated model but adds the extra comfort, keeps the same power, and adds modern innovation. The shipyard has increased the beam by forty centimeters from 4.20 to 4.60 meters, obtaining more comfort to what should be expected from a branded fifteen meter plus Sport Yacht. The old B50 was built to run and live the sea without big consideration of luxury as a priority, today's new version offers high level luxury in a minimal approach with an accommodation plan offering two cabins two heads, and separate crew cabin. The B50 can also be offered fully open, with a central radar arch, or a hard top. Designed by Baia technical department together with Alberto Acenzi the new B50 Cinquanta hull comes with the awareness of hundreds of built boats, tens of successful models and a lot of towing tank experience. The result is a similar to the old B50 roundish deep V hull, with a very narrow bow able to generate a big lift component abaft but fine tuned to allow to get better speed and sea keeping performances. The new B50 is not a restyling, but more a new boat renewal which in its time was unique, whose charming lines of classic opens and high performances remain unchanged, while additional technological and innovative solutions keep on distinguishing as a super fast commuting sport yacht. Powered by three engine choices from MAN 800hp engines, up to the bigger option of 1100hp, and surface drive propulsion the B50 Cinquanta can achieve top speeds in the 50 knots region.

Americas Cup

During my review of the 33rd America's Cup I received a good number of messages with some in favour for speaking about it, and a smaller part of these being against. Those who where not in favour, argued that PowerYacht is not about sailing so the Americas Cup has no place here. On the other part those who liked the little follow up that PowerYacht did where pretty much positive and upbeat about it all. For example a message stated, that although he was a keen motor boater he liked that PowerYacht followed the America's Cup because of the technological innovation it brings forthwith. This is also a big part of my reason why I follow the cup, with the other being it still remains among the most drama filled racing competition.
The Americas Cup has always seen a lot of money go into it, and for that reason it is the ultimate real testing laboratory for new technology on the water. Think of it as the most innovative real water testing field. No one in marine water sports invest so much and even prime power boating teams competing in P1 or Class 1 have about a 1% budget compared to that of a highly challenged America's Cup team. For the money spent and research going into it the Americas Cup will remain the premier boating sport from which ever way you look at it.
Now that the unusual Deed of Gift 33rd edition is over the World's oldest sport trophy can look forward or backwards. Yes because the Deed of Gift match as it was last month, is always a no limit battle which equals to who spends and invests the most usually wins. This means extraordinary innovations and a more open construction rule book which resulted in the higher speeds and the use of a wing instead of a soft sail from the winning US trimaran BMW Oracle.

Cigarette Supercar Experience

Hot off a successful Miami International Boat Show, where it unveiled its newest AMG-Inspired 46' Cigarette, custom- built to debut Mercury Racing's revolutionary high-horsepower 1350 Quad Cam, 4-valve twin engines, Cigarette Racing Team is hitting the road literally. The company, along with its inspiration, the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG, will be on display at the SuperCar Experience in Palm Beach, Florida, February 26 to 28. The show is the first of three enthusiast events to be staged this year, including New Orleans and The Hamptons; it incorporates a night on the track at Palm Beach International Raceway and a waterfront display on Flagler Drive where the AMG- Inspired Cigarette and Mercedes Benz SLS AMG will be on display on Saturday. An equestrian event and an evening of dinners and parties at prestigious Palm Beach locations will close the weekend. In attendance will be supercar owners, race car drivers and auto aficionados, all converging to share their penchant for horsepower. The Cigarette AMG Legendary Creations story was reported by hundreds of online, print and broadcast news services, at the show and in the following week. The brand melding was the first for both companies and demonstrated the successful cross-promotion of their audiences. Cigarette's display at the Miami International Boat show featured both the new powerboat and Gullwing-designed Mercedes Benz SLS AMG which had not been seen previously in the southeast. The boat and car shared a rich silver highly metallic alubeam paint scheme wrapped around crisp porcelain black and white upholstery. The SuperCar Experience runs February 26 - 28 and Cigarette Racing Team and Mercedes AMG will travel to more events over the course of the coming months.

Jarrett Bay New Dealer

Jarrett Bay Boatworks extends is custom and semi-production sportfish sales force, as well as our Beaufort, North Carolina full-service facility network throughout South Florida and the Caribbean with our recently formed Yachting Experts owner-partners Frank and Betty De Varona have a combined 25 years of boating experience and an impressive list of Top Producer awards, A-list product & service affiliations, and a vast & loyal base of customers they bring to the table. Jarrett Bay Boatworks President Randy Ramsey stated, he is thrilled to have the Yachting Experts duo of Frank and Betty De Varona representing Jarrett Bay in the markets they know best. We have always had a strong interest in our products and services from the South Florida and Latin American communities, and now with the De Varona’s dedication to and established reputation in this territory, we expect to see growth in both our new construction and service divisions. Wealthy foreign nationals continue to flock to South Florida in numbers so significant that Scotiabank opened a Wealth Management Center in Miami in June 2009. In a recent Palm Beach Post article, Staff Writer Monica Hatcher notes that distressed real estate sales in the South Florida marketplace have lured foreign nationals to this region of the United States, and have spurred a flood of applications for investor visas in the region. Many of these investors have also taken to the intrinsic Miami boating lifestyle and naturally chosen the De Varonas as their sales associates of choice. Combining the elements of Jarrett Bay’s superior offerings with Yachting Experts’ innate understanding of the dynamics of the region create the ideal platform for exciting new opportunities in an otherwise disenchanting time. Located at the epicenter of South Florida yachting, the Yachting Experts office and slips at Monty’s in Coconut Grove are just minutes from Miami International Airport, more than 28 marinas within a 15 mile radius, and some of the largest waterfront communities in the United States.

Nor-Tech Powerboats Joins Powerboat P1 World Championship

Old race boats never seem to die; they just become part of a recycling process that connects racers from around the world in a fraternity of offshore history. That very experience brought Patrick Huybreghts, a Belgian, together with Adib Mastry, an American boat racer and engine specialist over a decade ago. Just recently, the two closed a deal on a new Nor-Tech racing boat that could launch Huybreghts and his Powerboat P1 Spirit of Belgium Racing Team into a new chapter of his racing history. Mastry, who owns Mastry Engine Center on the West Coast of Florida, had sold engines for a Hatteras to Belgian Ray Van den Langenbergh, a friend of Huybreght's. As often happens in the boating business, friendship circles broaden and before long, Mastry was selling his own 38' Nor-Tech race boat with Mercury Racing 500's to Huybreghts. The boat had great credibility in racing for Mastry and was a step up for Huybreghts from his 21' Scarab. The two did several other boat deals to service Huybreght's business, Offshore Events, a corporate entertainment company that provides helicopter, Ferrari and powerboat rides to executives and their guests. Though the 2009 Powerboat P1 World Championship was Huybreght's "rookie" racing season, he already proved his mettle as a throttleman in over 15 years of powerboating and by setting a Guinness Book of World Records for an English Channel crossing speed record at 29 minutes, 26 seconds in 2007, towing waterski champ Micha Robyn. When he decided to go racing in the SuperSport class, his 38' Nor-Tech with twin Mercury Racing 500's seemed good enough for the competition; his 3-man team including Marc Sluszny and Micha Robijn proved fairly successful-especially in Sweden where they earned a second place finish, before blowing up their engines in the last race of the season. Ever-competitive, Huybreghts wanted to do better in 2010 and the props began to turn when he and veteran P1 racer and former commentator, Shelley Jory-Leigh, formed a new team. Jory-Leigh, who earned her reputation as a strong and fierce competitor in the former Honda Series (now a part of Powerboat P1 called SuperStock), went on to race in P1 with US championship racer Nigel Hook, then with Audrien Ciantar of the Chaudron Maltese boat-building family. When the two racers put their heads together, true team work happened and they have their sights set on a promising year. The duo will head to Cape Coral, Florida to test the new boat at the end of February, just in time to get it shipped to Europe for the start of the 2010 Powerboat P1 season in Split, Croatia. The boat is Nor-Tech's 427, the newest V-bottom and will sport Mercury Racing 600 engines with six drives. Nor-Tech builds both catamaran and V-bottom hulls and though the principals are Norwegian, they have been building high-performance boats in Florida for over 20 years. Huybreghts is looking forward to a return trip to Florida to get into the boat, having just returned from seeing its building in-progress. While there, he will work with both Nor-Tech and Mastry, who can provide additional racing set-up assistance, based on his own racing in a Nor-Tech and work with numerous offshore clients.

Pantera Returns to Powerboat P1

If preparation is key to a successful racing venture, then the new Phoenix 8 TV/Pantera Racing Team could be a contender in the 2010 Powerboat P1 World Championship SuperSport class. Two years ago, veteran American championship racer Jo Nunez, president of Pantera Boats, began conversations with P1 racer, Martin Lai of the Phoenix 8 TV team, about building a boat that would stand up to the rough waters of the Powerboat P1 World Championship. Nunez, a World Champ, and his father, Pepe, an Offshore Champion and speed record holder were giving a second look at an existing mold for 41-foot Pantera they had never put into production. For 24 months, Lai and Nunez exchanged emails and phone calls discussing the boat, the set-up, and racing strategy exchanges that resulted in the pair agreeing to race together under the Phoenix 8 TV/Pantera Racing Team banner in hopes of capturing a Powerboat P1 World Championship title. The pair will be partnered in a new custom-built 41-foot Pantera with a twin-step bottom and powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 525 EFIs with NXT1SSM drives, a combination of the Mercury Racing #6 Drive and a NXT1 transmission. Lai, the only Chinese competitor in offshore, is a UK-based businessman and has raced in the SuperSport class the past three years; he also has extensive experience racing in England and the Far East. Nunez, first generation American of Cuban parents, grew up in the family boat-building business. Following in his father's footsteps, he raced to a SBI World Championship in 2001, and has raced in Factory 1, Factory 2 and P-Class. Racing has been the main-stay of his life, starting as a NHRA Drag driver for Benihana Racing at just 16. While he hasn't raced boats since 2006, due to the company's busy pace, building patrol and pleasure boats, but ever a competitor, he still races motocross as a hobby. Phoenix 8 TV/Pantera Racing Team will draw on Pepe Nunez's 35-years of boat-building and race experience, including a Miami to New York record run in 1978. The elder Nunez set that record in a 24-foot Pantera with twin Mercury 2.4 litre outboards. Pantera previously competed in Powerboat P1, when Fair & White Racing ran a Pantera 36 in SuperSport from 2004 through 2006. Jo Nunez is interested in the adaptation to P1 and European-style offshore racing, citing his experience in the speed-bracketed U.S. P-Class racing as a plus. Lai and Nunez plan to do testing in Florida, before shipping the boat to Europe for the 2010 season opener in Split, Croatia, April 16-18. The team also has the advantage of a partnership with the largest independent satellite broadcasting company in China, Phoenix TV, which will televise the Powerboat P1 Championships globally, providing exposure for the teams in Asia, a new growth market for the marine and luxury products. The Powerboat P1 World Championships are broadcast globally through a variety of international broadcasters including EuroSport, RAI and in the US, MAV-TV.

Princess Achieve Environmental Award

Plymouth-based luxury boat builder, Princess Yachts has been recognized for its excellence in the environmental management of its business. The company has just been awarded ISO 14001, making it the first major European-based boat builder to gain this stringent international standard. The ISO 14001 standard measures the environmental impact of a company both internally and in the local community. Princess carried out a company-wide investigation into every aspect of its manufacturing activities, products and services, with every department within the company’s manufacturing sites and offices assessing all processes that had an environmental impact. The process included analyzing the use of materials, noise, emissions, and waste. Areas of particular scrutiny included the lamination process, extraction of dust in the GRP manufacturing areas, the paint process, and carpentry workshops. Energy management and usage throughout all Princess factories was also subject to a rigorous survey. By identifying where the energy use was highest, the company installed inverter controllers to help reduce usage, thus reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint. Externally, Princess worked with suppliers to reduce waste generated from externally supplied goods and products. Internally systems have been implemented to ensure waste is better segregated for recycling and a programme of noise reducing measures was introduced, designed to benefit employees and the local community alike. The company philosophy for improving efficiencies is certainly nothing new, particularly within the yachts themselves. Weight reduction programmes to improve vessel performance and consumption have resulted in significant advances in this area over the years - in fact, some of the latest production technology employed has benefited both the product and much of the ISO 14001 standard’s criteria. Resin infusion manufacturing massively reduces emissions and odor while significantly reducing the final product weight. Achieving compliance with the ISO 14001 standard is not just about meeting these stringent targets but is about demonstrating continuous improvement and Princess Yachts remains committed to reviewing all areas looking for further advancements. Continuous initiatives, such as instruction and awareness training ensuring adoption of new processes and the use of new technology, have already ensured a company-wide acceptance of the environmental management system.

Princess New Hong Kong Partnership

Princess Yachts International plc has signed Chart Victory Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of China Haidian Holdings, as its new distributor for Hong Kong, with immediate effect. The company will operate under the name Princess Yachts Hong Kong in a move that further emphasises the increased focus the British boat builder has placed on the Asia region in recent years. Princess Yachts Hong Kong will work directly with Princess Yachts International’s manufacturing, marketing and sales facilities in the UK and utilise the strong marketing expertise of China Haidian within the market to strengthen the Princess brand’s presence there. Mr Hon Kwok Lung, Chairman of China Haidian, sees a strong future for Princess in Hong Kong and is very encouraged by the boat builder’s plans.

Riviera Message

At a meeting held on Friday 22nd January 2010 in Brisbane the creditors of Riviera, Australia’s largest luxury boat builder, voted in favour of a Deed of Company Arrangement (DOCA) that will see all current and former employees receive their full entitlements and a dividend paid to unsecured creditors. During the receivership the operations of Riviera have been restructured to achieve greater efficiency and continued production of high quality Riviera vessels. The DOCA is a further step in restructuring Riviera and enabling it to trade in its own right, outside of formal administration processes. In effect, completion of the terms of the DOCA will bring to an end the official appointment of Voluntary Administrators to Riviera. This will allow the receivers and Riviera management to continue to improve and grow the Riviera business. The acceptance of the proposed DOCA is a further milestone in the rebuilding process of Riviera since the considerable effects of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) impacted the global luxury boat building industry forcing Riviera into receivership on May 8 2009. Riviera coming out of Administration also removes any possibility of the liquidation of the legal entities that were previously under Administration. This creates even greater security and confidence in Riviera moving forward. As we enter a new year, Riviera, is powering into 2010 with strong sales, realistic global inventory levels and is actively engaged in multiple new product development projects for release at major Boat Shows this year are certainly in a strong position to maximise the opportunities of the economic recovery in 2010. Riviera will continue to excite the market again this year. This significant agreement was reached with the unanimous support from creditors for the DOCA covering five trading entities within the Riviera Group of companies. The DOCA covers the current Riviera trading entities; Riviera Marine (INT.) Pty Limited, R Marine Pittwater Pty Limited, Riviera Runaway Bay Pty Limited, Riviera Coomera Pty Limited and Riviera Marine (MFG) Pty Limited. The eight remaining, non trading entities of the Riviera Group are no longer required given the corporate rationalisation and restructuring of the group and so are not included in the DOCA. Under the terms of the DOCA, former employees of the Riviera DOCA companies will receive all of their unpaid wages, superannuation, annual leave and any relevant redundancy payment. Riviera Fairytale

Snow White and the Seven Aboard is the story of one Aussie family living the Riviera dream. For Kylie and Alan Moses every time they step on board their Riviera 51 they feel like they are stepping into a fairytale. The Moses family bought the Riviera 51 in August 2009 at the Sydney International Boat Show and named her Snow White and the Seven Aboard because between them, Kylie and Alan have five children. Lilly is the family dog, a Cavoodle, which is a King Charles Cavalier and Poodle cross. Living on the Port Hacking River in Grays Point, Sydney, gives the Moses family easy access to Sydney's picturesque waterways where they spend most weekends water skiing, snorkelling, fishing and cruising. Alan said they would often cruise 100 nautical miles outside to Nelsons Bay at Port Stephens but were planning to venture further offshore for a few longer journeys. The family is actively involved in water sports - Kylie and Alan enjoy diving and Alan also likes fishing. The family also play soccer together. Alan said the Riviera 51 was a great way to bring the family together to spend some quality time doing the things you love. Christmas and New Year were a blast on board with the family enjoying the spectacular fireworks display on Sydney Harbour. They are also planning a trip to Port Stephens and will celebrate Australia Day in true Aussie Style with a 10 boat raft up and barbecue on board in the south west arm at Port Hacking. The 51 is Alan's first Riviera and he is proud to be able to share the spirit of boating with his family and live the Riviera Dream.
