Project: Hustler 29 Rockit

Hustler present the project of the 29 Rockit, the second in this new high performance range following the introduction of the 39 in 2009. Just as its bigger sister the 29 Rockit offers a bottom specifically designed for over the 100 mph mark. This bottom is named by Hustler powerboats as the Sexstep. Sex hear meaning for six, which is how much small steps the vee of the 29 Rockit features. These are made to make the best of stability in the higher speeds mark. The 29 Rockit has also two cockipt styles, Lake and Offshore Edition. In the Lake format you get a single helm bolster, L-shaped settee, and sunpad aft. The Offshore version gives an additional co-pilot seat, forward looking bench for three persons, and again a sunpad aft. Interior plans are not shown, but I do accept the usual vee shaped berth to fore, small bar galley, and shower head. Power options are for two choices all from Mercury with a 496 standard, or 525 optional.

New Model: Mustang 480 Sports Euro

Based on the 430 Sport Coupe hull, the Sports Euro is Mustang's flybridge version of the more aggressive looking hard top design. Just as its smaller hardtop sister the 480 Sports Euro is designed with European elements. It was presented officially in Australia's premier Sydney boat show in August. Interior for the 480 Sports Euro will be a two or three cabin choice, with a single or two heads plan. The two cabin version offers an utility room in lieu of a double cabin, and larger single bathroom. Larger to normal horizontal wedge shape view windows feature in the owners cabin to fore. The flybridge offers a C-shaped settee in the forward part, and a sun pad aft under the radar arch. Power is from twin Volvo IPS600 pod drives.

Boat Review: Menorquin MY 145 Fly

Presentation
Launched in 2007 the Menorquin Yacht 145 continues up market thinking by the Spanish Menorca Island boat builder. This made the MY145 not only important for being a new model in its presentation at the Palma Show of Spring 2007, but more so because it introduced vacuum infusion in the building method, and the use of an outside designer with Tommaso Spadolini taking the job for the exterior looks. This last idea of out sourcing the design got so much praise in the MY145 that Menorquin have also used a separate independent designer for the newly planned 20 and 24 metres flagships, using the hands of other famous Italian architect Fulvio De Simoni for the upcoming Custom Yacht range. The MY145 is one of the recent additions to the Menorquin line, but the yard listening to customers demands put a new additional three cabins five berths version in early 2009. As many Menorquin's the MY145 is also offered in different versions for what regard the outside. A Fly as for the review here, or the standard Hardtop.
Accommodation
Interiors have always been the bread and butter of the Menorquin yachts, offering livable layouts with good spaces and classic wood filled finishes. But lets start with the outside of the MY145 welcoming you aft with an extended integrated bathing platform which comes out stylishly from the lower part of the traditional canoe stern. A small moulded door to starboard welcomes you to the aft deck. This space is available as both free or with an optional two person bench settee to port. On both sides and up one step you go to the integrated and safe side deck, which takes you to the bow, where you find a very nice forward looking four person bench sofa. From the aft main deck is the the ladder which takes you to the flybridge. The fly has a C-shaped settee to port, helm station to starboard, and optional hydraulic crane to aft which creates stowage space for a medium sized tender. The crane and extended bathing platform makes it possible to carry two tenders.
Back to aft and moving forward a three part patio door welcomes you inside the interior living deck. To port here is an L-shaped settee which can transform to a double berth, making total sleeping capacity plus two for a total six or seven berths. To starboard is a small furniture unit opposite the dinette, and the fully equipped internal helm station.
From the middle of the main deck and down four steps you reach the lower accommodation deck. This part of the MY145 is available in two layouts. The standard is a two cabin, two shower heads, C-shaped galley, and a small L-shaped settee. Optional is a three cabin version. This gives a single cabin in lieu of the small settee below and also takes part of the galley. Cabin planning is rather standard as a traditional cruiser should be. But that does not mean that is not comfortable. The owners suite is located to fore, double cabin midship port side with two single berths. and a guest shower head. The third cabin option gets its location to starboard side in front of the galley, and is a single berth.
Performance

Having a traditional fully keeled semi displacement hull, the Menorquin MY145 Fly gives a respectable medium speed cruise. The full keel pays a price in performance due to drag, but then it gives back in better direction control, which added with the full hull measuring only seventeen centimetres to the overall length gives also superior stability. These two factors, keel and full under the water hull give also minimum rolling with a natural progressive movement during cruise or anchor. The MY145 is offered with four engine choices starting with the standard twin Volvo D4 300hp, to the other optional choices from the D6 330hp, most high revving Yanmar 310hp, and the Cummins 330hp which revs the less. With twin Volvo D6 330hp the MY145 Fly reaches top speeds of 18 knots at the max 3500 rpm. Optimum cruising was at 2800 rpm with speeds of 14 knots, range of 245 nautical miles, and consumption of 5.2 litres per mile. If you want to enjoy more the trip you can also cruise at a slower 8 knots with the Volvo's 330hp only revving at 1600 rpm, giving a long range of eighty hours or 645 nautical miles.
Positive
Good economy speed
Full deck use
Accommodation
Negative
Low flybridge safety walls
Competition
Surprisingly the Menorquin MY145 Fly is the real wild card for staying closer to its roots. In fact the MY145 unlike other traditional looking boats stays true to its ancestors hull shape, and is unique for having medium range explorer qualities in its DNA. If you want a semi displacement hull the closer you can get is with a live aboard explorer like the Grand Banks 41 Heritage EU, or the Rhea 43. Competition criteria was for flybridge, thirteen to fourteen metres size, two or three cabins, twin engines, and 15 knots plus of speed.
Beneteau 42 Swift Trawler - explorer trawler, 2 cabins heads, 26 knots max
Grand Banks 41 Heritage EU - 2 cabins 1 head, explorer with classic trawler looks
Hinckley 44 Talaria FB - lobster design, available in single cabin lower salon
Mainship 45 Trawler - explorer two cabins, large main deck
Patrone 42 Convertible Flybridge - planning gozzo, three cabins, main deck galley
Rhea 43 - smallest, explorer trawler, two cabin heads
Sciallino 40 Fly - planning Ligurian gozzo, two or three cabin choice
WILD CARD: Portofino 47 Fly - three cabins, cross over modern traditional
Conclusion
Slow Yachting is the new Menorquin campaign presented in the fall of 2009 in November during the Barcelona Boat Show. This campaign gives reasons why one should choose a Menorquin boat. Most important are that of stable navigation, relax sailing, easy manoeuvrability, max safety, fuel economy, and enjoyment of the boat during cruise. Obviously the MY145 Fly has all these features and more, being one of its latest designs. Its lower deck for example is spacious and the three cabin plan gives also better flexibility for those who cruise as a large family. You also get an exterior and living main deck where safe enjoyment is a total experience, thanks to safe bulwarks, and the settee to fore. The Menorquin MY145 Fly should be a first look if you want a traditional looking cruiser echoing the past with a canoe style stern, good comfortable spaces, and slow to medium economical cruising speeds.

New Model: Cranchi Sixty 4 HT

With over two thousand deliveries of over twelve metres Cranchi from 1988 since today, it was only a matter of time, thinking and effort for the Italian builder to go over its since the year 2000 reached fifty feet limit and create the new Sixty 4 HT flagship. The official decision to go bigger was taken in 2005, and since then Cranchi built a whole new establishment, its fourth named Seventy Plant Four able to construct boats larger to fifty feet from the new Yacht Class range with extreme efficiency and productive manner. The larger size expansion plan also meant more investment to Cranchi test centre which has been updated with a new marina, and bigger 100 ton travel lift. Cranchi 64 HT over four years in the making has a lot to say in the way it was come up to be. But also in itself has much to tell offering an all inclusive fully over equipped Sport Yacht. This Sport Yacht has more to what a normal yachtsman would ask as standard, and comes complete with more then one would desire like hydraulic bow stern thrusters, water maker, night vision, and aft winches. Then there is the technical unique details to mention with the hardtop made in collaboration with Webasto taking first attention, followed by the fully opening patio to the aft deck, side door by the helm to the side deck, opening side windows in the interior saloon, shower on the fore deck, and up down bathing platform. Worth to note that the main central patio door and side door, have electric opening with a back up manual system for emergency. Spaciousness is also found in this three double guest cabin Sport Yacht, but it is not only measured in centimeters in that or this area, but most notably in compartments which open up everywhere onboard. Here Cranchi never abandoning its small boats heritage sure know a thing or two, and put it to very good use on its new biggest offer. Another first for Cranchi is also the choice of its engines with the 64 HT being powered by twin MAN 1400hp with standard shaft propulsion. This choice moves away from the Volvo marriage the Italian builder has on its smaller models since I can remember. Speeds are for a 35 knots max, with a 32 knots cruise, these being obtained with prototype hull number one which was powered by smaller MAN 1360hp engines. Aldo Cranchi and the yard research and technical department opted for a construction in traditional fiberglass ways with hand laid solid single skin bottom, and sandwich core hull for the sides, and some parts of the topsides.
Technical Data:
LOA - 20.85 m (68.4ft)
Hull Length - 18.65 m

Project: Meridian 541 Sedan

Meridian presents project details of the 541 Sedan. This new Meridian will be second in size to this US builder fleet, and flagship of the four model Sedan line. Among the most sold flybridge boats in the US, the Brunswick owned Meridian line has been gaining huge market share in the last years, and the 541 Sedan is a reply for owners demand to remain with the brand. As the above rendering shows the 541 Sedan has European influenced looks with large view windows going from bow to midship on both the main and lower deck. Interesting is also the curved shear line that goes from low just above the bathing platform aft to the bow. Accommodation is for a three cabin layout with a full beam owners suite. Below deck is also space for an utility crew room to midship. The main deck plan does not show an internal lower helm, but so far it is interesting to see the layout of this split level saloon, which has an opposite plan to the norm with an aft galley, dining table upon entrance, and a house like sofa having opposite entertainment centre in the three steps raised area to fore. The flybridge seems also unusual to other European designs of similar size for the fact that it does not offer a sunpad, and has a large wetbar. Standard twin 600hp, or optional 715hp Cummins with ZF Zeus pods will power the Meridian 541 Sedan. The optional Cummins QSM11 715hp ZF Zeus pods combination is also a first exclusive to the 541 Sedan.

33rd Americas Cup - USA BMW Oracle Wins Sports Oldest Trophy

It was again a day of long wait, but the day looked good from the start for the second race of the 33rd Americas Cup. Nonetheless we had to wait close till the time limit to start a race, which is at 1630. At 1614 the postponement flag went down, and the race start time was on for 1626.
The start duel was not exciting as for race one. But still we saw a very surprising error from the Defending Swiss Team who entered the box late and at the wrong side. Again Alinghi5 left the judges with no choice receiving a penalty. After this we saw both boats staying to there respective sides BMWOracle to port side, and Alinghi to starboard. The error in the box entering might have mixed up the Defender which started with a deficit of 24 seconds.
Surprisingly both boats choose a separate direction with the USAOracle going to starboard, and Alinghi to port of the circuits. This early separation reach a distance of three kilometres. Having a five hundred metres advantage and three minutes into the race BMWOracle decides to tack and cover. But Alinghi was on the right side of the course for position and wind. Having better air Alinghi5 catamaran saw its disadvantage decrease and surprisingly go ahead for most part of the first run. Here BMWOracle suffered at times seven hundred metres of deficit to the defender. The lead from the Defender continued until the boats came close to the first turn mark, and here BMWOracle tactician made a perfect call to gybe exactly on the lay line, cross behind Alinghi5, and take the lead seconds later. BMWOracle rounds the first mark by 28 seconds ahead of the very close first run.
From now on we see the Challenger boat extend its lead going over to two thousand metres in some parts, and 2 minutes 44 seconds of advantage by the second mark. The last run saw a cover from the Challenger BMWOracle and crossing the finishing line with a 5 minutes 26 second lead. Of note is the red protest flag which appeared in the Defender boat towards the end of the first leg. The Defender canceled its protest after the end of the race.
BMWOracle is the winner of the 33rd Americas Cup, and this should also bring an end to the legal dispute. This is at least what was verbally promised by the Swiss Defending team. Today started also the rumours for the Challenger of Record for the next 34th Edition with an Italian prominent sport paper saying the Italian Mascalzone Latino is favorite for this title. Now its just to hope that this legally intense 33rd Americas Cup is over once and for all.

New Model: Mulder 92 Flybridge

Announcing this order in 2007, Mulder has finally launched its new all aluminium 92 Flybridge. The 92 Flybridge is Mulder's biggest build to date and was made for an Egyptian client. Design was trusted to long time Mulder collaborator Guido de Groot who presented a round-bilged, semi-planing underwater shape, typical to the offers from the Dutch builder. Dr Groot was also responsible for the previous bigger 88 Flybridge plans, and here he follows similar but more modern looking exterior, adding length, and beam to offer more comfort. The Mulder 92 Flybridge is alloy offering a superior customization to owners, unimaginable in any glass fibre Super Yacht of similar size. Powered by twin Cats C18 1015hp engines the 92 Flybidge should achieve top speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 16. Other more powerful engines pushing the speeds up to about 25 knots should also be available.
Technical Data:
LOA - 28 m (91.8ft)
Beam - 6.50 m

33rd Americas Cup - Challenger BMWOracle Dominates Race One

Finally after two cancelled days last Monday and Wednesday, racing of the first fully multi hull America's Cup got underway today Friday the 12th February. The breezy morning gave hope to the day and it did materialize in real racing at 1434 CET. The reply to the rumours about speed where coming to an end, and we could see the reality of Defender Alinghi 5 catamaran, and Challenger BMWOracle trimaran by dueling.
The start part duel which is five minutes prior the actual match was exciting as ever, with Alinghi closing the way to the starboard right of way BMW Oracle, and receiving a penalty during the entrance. But the excitement was not over as BMW Oracle blocking Alinghi5 was actually immobilized itself and could not move for a minute. While this happened Alinghi5 escaped, went inside the box turned the start mark and got a one minute 27 second advantage and 670 metres of length before the BMWOracle made its way the start line. The start gave a good advantage to Defender Alinghi5. But unfortunately for the defender this was short lived and in less thirty minutes the USA BMW Oracle trimaran made it up to nothing. Only two tacks and twenty miles upwind the US boat continued to show its power adding further metres before the turn of the top mark, where Alinghi5 had a deficit of three minutes 21 seconds. Before the mark commentators where stating that in most probability the down wind leg should give advantage to the defender, being the catamaran lighter to the US trimaran. An advantage which did not materialize and again we saw the BMWOracle thrashing the Swiss boat and adding its distance close to the four thousand metres mark. Just to add more pain to the Defender when doing the penalty before the finish line, Alinghi did not cross it properly and had to cross over again adding a further five minutes to the deficit which finished a total of 15 minutes 28 seconds.
The first of the best of three races in mostly light wind has shown a superior power from the US Trimaran Challenger and it will take something big from the Swiss Defender to haul this deficit which in today's conditions had an average of 10% advantage. Today's average ten knots breeze showed the US BMWOracle trimaran more power in both up and down wind legs, and that it can ride closer to wind angle. Next race now is scheduled for Sunday with a forecast wind of Force 4 to 5. We will see if the judges give way to racing in this wind for round two, and what Alinghi 5 can do for itself to make it competitive.

Project: Sky 18,66 m Space

Magellan Marine is a new company founded in Liechtenstein and presents its first project model the eighteen metre Space. A list of new names surrounds this first project from this small North European country starting with the concept from Peter Mintel, naval architecture by Andrew Lea, and design by Maximillian Kolb. The Magellan Space will have an axe bow concept which according to its builder should reduce vertical acceleration by as much as 50%. Other novelties is a dual panelled glasses with integrated solar panels used for the hard top and cabin deck to fore. The Magellan Space looks like an out of the norm concept mixing live aboard solutions with a fast hull able to achieve 35 knots of top speed. The interior plan offers a twin double cabin layout, with midship owners stateroom, and VIP suite to fore. A three cabin plan is also available on request. Worth to note is that the renderings also show a very comfortable living saloon, with galley bar unit, chaise lounge, C-shaped sofa, and huge views from big windows which surround all of the main deck area. Construction will be of alloy and the production is limited up to 33 units all customisable to owners wishes. Power is from standard twin Volvo IPS900 or optional triple units of the same drive engine.

New Model: Maritimo A50 Aegean Flybridge

Maritimo presents the more standard to the eye version of the A50 Aegean called the Flybridge. First presented as the Enclosed version with upper bridge, the A50 Aegean Flybidge takes a similar stance to its more all weather sister, and features more standard forms. The A50 Aegean Flybridge has in fact a standard proposition of a dual helm station, inside on the main deck, and open air on the fly. The flybridge being the main difference to the other version gives you a central helm station, L-shaped settee to port, and a bunk for three persons to starboard. Aft of the flybridge, is left free to use as one desires. The maid deck of the A50 Aegean Flybridge has a similar layout to the Enclosed, with the difference that to starboard we have the interior commanding station, in replacement of the internal staircase. The staircase of the Flybridge version is outside in integrated fiberglass mould. Identical to the Enclosed the lower deck accommodation plan is for a three cabin five berth two heads layout. Owners suite to port mid ship, VIP to fore, single guest cabin and head number two to starboard. The A50 as the bigger Aegean sisters has the rare uniqueness to find for a flybridge motor yacht tender garage solution. The beam and draft dimensions of the hull give away that most probably the under waters of the A50 are very similar to all of the Maritimo Aegean, full range of Sports Cabriolet, 48 / 52 Cruising Motor Yacht, and 500 / 550 Offshore Convertible. Power is from twin Volvo D12s 775hp each which should give an economical 25 knots cruise.
Technical Data:
LOA - 16.11 m (52.8ft)
Beam - 5.2 m
Draft - 1.3 m
Displacement - 22 t
Fuel Capacity - 3000 l
Water Capacity - 800 l

Project: Luhrs 33 Open

Luhrs present the project for a 33 Open model. Scheduled to be launched the coming Spring this Sportfish Cruiser will be the first built at the Millville, New Jersey plant. Luhrs 33 Open should represent a smaller mirrored example as the latest model from the US builder that was the 37 Canyon Series launched in the fall of 2008. As most of Luhrs boat the 33 Open will feature hardcore fishability with details such as an in transom live well, plenty of in-deck fishbox storage, and intelligently-designed swivelling cockpit seating. Below details or layout plans have not been shown yet, but accept the usual good comforts you've expect from Luhrs. Power, propulsion and speed estimates have so far not been presented.

New Model: Costes 58 Galatea

Costes presents its first model with the new 58 Galatea of what is a nice looking sport yacht. This new Italian boat builder founded by four entrepreneurs with operating offices in Milan, and the building shipyard on the island of Sicily in Trapani heads to compete for one of the most difficult yacht size style market segments. The 58 Galatea is designed by architect Marco Bonelli, with the piloting station coming from the renowned Giugaro firm. Bonelli concentrated his efforts to offer spacious cabins with a minimum height requirement of 1.9 metres in all the lower deck. The interior comes in a three double cabins six berth, or a two cabin four berth plan choice. In the last case the owners get a full beam master cabin. In the three cabin version the owner cabin moves to fore, a VIP suite to midship starboard side, and twin bunk cabin to port. The VIP and third guest cabin share also the head in this plan, with an entrance from inside the cabins. Below you also get a C-shaped sofa, and galley. While the exterior looks of the first Costes sport yacht gets high praise, I still think that the interior was more planned for a two cabins especially to what regards the shower head sharing plan in the six berth layout. A small crew cabin for a single person with head is available at the bow tip. The Costes 58 Galatea reaches top speeds of 42 knots, and a cruise of 34 knots with the big Cats C18 option, aided with Arneson's efficient surface drive propulsion.
Technical Data:
LOA - 17.95 m (58ft)

Improve-it = Chris-Craft 25 Corsair

Chris-Craft presents a rich update improvement to its 25 Corsair model. The 25 Corsair is the second small in size of this timeless sport boat with overnight accommodation range. Chris-Craft decided to spice up the 25 Corsair and making it as classy looking as ever, by adding teak wood outside, and extended the bathing platform aft. The teak is in fact featured on all the deck, including the sides, fore, and aft. Chris-Craft also upgraded the seats of the 25 Corsair to more luxurious looks and feel. Surely the unique feature which made the 25 Corsair classy looking are still here like its automobile style windshield, and the deep vee twenty degrees hull. In its small cuddy cabin below the 25 Corsair offers a double berth, and a portable head. Not bad for such a sleek sport boat. Standard power is from a single Volvo or Mercury power, with petrol or diesel choices starting from 260hp up to 425hp.

New Model: Lazzara LSX 78 Fly

A new model from Lazzara is always big news for those who like innovative yachts. The US builder has been the pusher of new materials usage, and modern design solutions in the last years, challenging European competitors in what usually is there league. This new LSX 78 Fly is a further improvement of the success that is the LSX 75 delivered in over twelve examples as at 2009. Actually the LSX 78 Fly was born first as a 75 version project with the addition of a sport bridge feature in early last year. But during development phase the yard extended the bathing platform, and the US firm decided for a new model designation. Another change was also made for the bridge clearance with the LSX 78 Fly being one foot higher to the LSX 75. Apart the new spacious flybridge which adds a further area of entertainment, the LSX 78 Fly keeps the same unique principle of the 75. The interior is the much sought four cabin, eight berth layout with full beam owners stateroom, and VIP suite to fore. Performance stays the same again with the quadruple IPS600 435hp set up giving moderate fast 32 knots max, and most importantly a 26 knots cruise with impressive efficiency delivering about 400 nautical miles range.
Technical Data:

Projects: Bavaria 46 Deep Blue Flybridge, Bavaria 38 Sport HT

German's mass pleasure boat builder challenges the market again by presenting two new projects which are alternate versions of models already presented. The first of these projects is the 46 Deep Blue Flybridge and just like the Open and SportTop version, BMW Group DesignworksUSA are responsible for the exterior design. This new flybridge Motor Cruiser version of the 46 Deep Blue series offers a dual helm station experience combined with more interior space on the main deck. This motor cruiser puts Bavaria into a new league, as in fact it is the German builder first flybridge boat. Opening glass doors welcome you inside, and slide open over the entire boat´s width, which take you to sheltered relaxing areas. The flybridge features the second helm station to starboard, central C-shaped settee aft, and a sunbathing area to fore. Glass surfaces to fore and on the side of the fore deck add to additional natural light to the cabins. Down below just as the other 46 Deep Blue which this Flybridge version shares the hull with, is a three double cabins, and two heads plan. Owners stateroom to fore, and the two double guest cabins to mid ship. Unlike the other 46 Deep Blue in Open or SportTop version, which are powered by Volvo stern drives the Flybridge will have IPS 600 forward looking pods. The other Bavaria project is based on the just presented 38 Sport, latest new launch of Bavaria's sport cruiser line, and follows similar looks to the successful 28 Sport launched in the fall of 2009. As in all its models over thirty feet presented in recent years Bavaria has developed a Hardtop version in close cooperation with BMW Group DesignworksUSA, its partner in terms of exterior design. The new 38 Sport HT will be a good looking sport cruiser offering sporty and dynamic lines, featuring an evolutionary hard top style which joins with the high free board hull and clean design aspects of the new BMW DesignworksUSA projects. Just as the standard 38 Sport the new Sport HT version offers a spaciously arranged cockpit featuring a large seating area, sun, wellness corners, integrated wet bar, and another sunbathing spot on the foredeck. The 38 Sport HT interior is a twin separate cabin, and convertible C-shaped settee plan. Power will be from twin stern drive with the standard starting engines being twin Volvo 320hp petrol engines.

Improve-it = Albemarle 360XF

In Albemarle's quest to provide more to its customers the Carolina boat builder announce a new Volvo IPS600 power propulsion choice version for the popular 360XF. This now famous Volvo propulsion system utilizes pod drives that dramatically increases efficiency compared to traditional inboard line shafts configurations. It also offers higher top speeds, faster acceleration, easy handling, reduced fuel consumption, and a better cruising range. IPS also makes for minimal vibration and sound plus virtually no exhaust fumes, thus onboard comfort takes an improvement, while at the same time retains the traditional inboard benefits, such as propellers under the hull plus extensive use of bronze and stainless steel to the gear. Albermarle also have put Volvo’s Sportfish as a standard feature, providing an unparalleled ability to chase a fish after the hook-up. While top speed figures have not been announced Albemarle announced an extra 2.5 knots versus the standard twin Cummins 540hp engines which should reach a 34 knots max, and a 121 litres per hours fuel consumption at 30 knots cruise, which means an improvement of 30%. Accommodation of the 360XF offers a four or five berth layout, version with three beds to fore, and an extra double within the convertible saloon.

Project: Mochi 74 Dolpin Cruiser

As in music, design follows a similar pattern of cross over evolution, and here Italian builder Mochi present the project for a new 74 Dolphin Cruiser, based on traditional down east lobster yacht looks, but featuring also aspects of modern form and functions. Yes cross over styles have always been part of the Dolphins from Mochi, designed by Studio Victory Brunello Acampora. But it's fair to say with this new 74 Cruiser, modernity does takes a new challenge. First of all we are seeing larger top sides much more to the standard version of the 74, and the same flybridge is now extended and actually covers over eighty per cent of the aft cockpit deck. Other more motor yacht features is the deck split in two areas with lounging upon entering the interior, dining to fore, and a very Italian med solution of a separate galley. The 74 Dolphin Cruiser will also feature a bigger lower deck with four double cabins all with personal heads, and a bigger crew quarters for a max of three berths. The standard 74 Dolphin had a fourth single berth cabin and smaller crew quarters. Power for the 74 Dolphin Cruiser which will also be the new Mochi flagship of the planning fleet, will be from twin MAN 1550hp with estimated top speeds of 31 knots.

Improve-it = Heesen 4700 Aluminium

Following intensive sea trials in the North Sea Heesen Yachts is proud to announce that the delivery of 4YOU has now taken place. This 47 metre Super Yacht is a sister-ship of hull number 12947, M/Y Sirocco, launched in 2006 and hull number 14247, M/Y Celestial Hope delivered in 2008. Her interior design was conceived by Omega Architects, who created a fresh contemporary style rich yet understated with clean lines and luxurious details. Guests arriving on the main deck aft are welcomed into the vast main saloon, passing first through an art-embellished lobby. This leads on into a social area furnished with coffee tables, armchairs and pouffes where an eight-seater table, custom made from American walnut and topped with leather, is inlaid with intricate patterns of matt silver. The room's soft colour palette, focuses on tones of beige and taupe set against the pale background of a creamy silk carpet, while the use of semi-gloss varnish also contributes to the relaxed and cool atmosphere. Guests can also enjoy the second saloon on the upper deck, where a brightly lit sky lounge offers three comfortable sofas and a choice of poufs that can also serve as coffee tables. Here, guests can enjoy live music from a baby-grand piano that dominates the aft portion of the room, while the plasma screen is hidden by a unique piece of art deco-inspired art, made by Dutch glass maker Glass Déco, this combines several panels of glass, delicately coloured in pale blue and light gold, to create a marine scene. A further example of inlaid stainless steel can be seen in the doors of a dark wood cabinet. An elegant full-service bar topped with American walnut and white Carrara marble is positioned aft, adjacent to the sliding doors that give access to the aft portion of the bridge deck, where the primary function is open air dining. One deck above is the sundeck whose centre portion, like 4YOU's sister-ship Sirocco, can be partially enclosed. This deck offers an open-air fitness centre and a spa pool area that can be fully covered by an awning supported by carbon-fibre retractable pillars. Eight guests can be accommodated on the lower deck in four cabins, of which two are twins and two are VIP doubles. Located forward on the main deck, the master suite is entered through the owner's office and leads on through a pair of walk-in wardrobes to the master bedroom, which occupies the yacht's full beam.

Project: Jeaneau NC11

Through bold innovation in design, Jeanneau is now able to offer an all new, contemporary design concept, featuring panoramic views, and integration of living spaces. Each style element contribute to overall comfort onboard and seaworthy qualities. The designers of this new eleven metre Sport Cruiser concept have tapped into Jeanneau’s wealth of experience designing boats to create a new way to enjoy the sun and sea. The overall design signals a renewal in the Jeanneau product range. The clever NC 11 concept is product of the Garroni design cabinet, long time collaborator of the French builder in it's Prestige and Leader range. Like an apartment with a view of the sea, this NC 11 concept for liveable boating affords incredible comfort especially in the saloon with it's lateral galley that merges into the spacious cockpit, all featuring an uninterrupted view of the horizon. Brighter, greater visibility, the NC 11 also boasts panoramic views through an opening glass roof, a wide sliding glass door in four independent panels, and a sliding side door. Fine quality furnishings frame the panoramic views and enhance the overall effect, redefining one’s perspective of life on the water. The key is to benefit fully from the sun and sea, at any hour of the day. The NC 11 also features unbelievable space, with sleeping accommodation for four below, and two in the convertible C-shaped saloon. Numerous well placed storage lockers correspond to precise uses onboard, and are located aft beneath the modular bench seating, in the large cockpit, under the floor, and to the sides. The Jeanneau NC11 will have standard power from twin D3 200hp Volvo engines, which look small to power an over ten metre, and five ton plus Sport Cruiser to the estimated 30 knots plus speeds.

Improve-it = Broom 425

The Broom 425 is now available in a new aft deck option, which adds further entertain space to stern. Developing it on the successful 450 and 395 concept, this 425 has the cockpit settee moved back to the transom as possible providing a much aft deck area. This is an option as the present walk round deck model will continue for those owners who want the excellent work free area provided by the standard plan. The 425 has also been added with a unique optional three cabin arrangement. The third cabin replaces the lower deck port side located C-shaped sofa. As always supporting its long time heritage of a good inland waterways as much to an offshore cruiser, the 425 is available with twin or single engine options. With a single engine the top speed of the 425 is 18 knots, making it also a good offshore hopper but with better economy, and the missed safety feature offered by twins.

Projects: San Juan SJ40ST, San Juan SJ40

San Juan continue to upgrade their range and present two important projects. These two new projects will fit at the centre of the nine model range from San Juan and are based on the SJ38 and the SJ40FB hulls, with identical length and beam, but a different propulsion set up. Both the new SJ40ST, and SJ40 will in fact be offered with the Volvo IPS forward looking pod propulsion, with 500 series giving 370hp each as standard. San Juan has released no interior plans, so we don't know if San Juan is offering a more spacious lower deck on these new 40 models. The SJ40FB with flybridge but shaft powered has accommodation below of a single owners cabin to fore, separate shower head, and a galley. The 38 has a V-shaped berth forward, separate shower head, L-shaped galley and a double cabin mid ship layout. The above pictures shows the SJ40ST, this last two letters meaning for soft top. This will be an open coupe version, coupled to San Juan traditional lined hull which give it big picnic boat looks thanks to the forty feet size. The on top San Juan SJ40 continues the twelve year old Washington boat builder expansion. From this rendering the SJ40 has very similar looks to the nice Traditional Cruiser that is the SJ48. Based on the 38 and 40 hull, the standard SJ40 is an enclosed hard top lobster looks design, and just like the ST version will be powered by twin Volvo forward looking IPS500 pods at 370hp each. San Juan is estimating speeds above 30 knots from both of the designs with this new propulsion set up. Of particular interest in the SJ40 is also what looks like a more enclosed extended hard top versus the 38, giving the feeling of better all weather usage.

Project: Fairline 50 Targa GT

During the just past London Boat Show, Fairline released project plans to a new addition to its express cruiser and yacht range, with the 50 Targa Gran Turismo expected to be launched later on this year, and to make her first show debuts in early 2011. The development of the 50 Targa Gran Turismo follows the just launched all new 58 of the same range at the recent London Boat Show. The 50 Gran Turismo will enjoy a spacious three cabin, two en-suite interior with an optional fourth crew cabin. This new project also follows the latest evolutions of the Targa express cruiser design including many of the features, and interior layout introduced on the just launched 58 model. Key features include panoramic windows and extensive glazing throughout the 50 Targa Gran Turismo to provide light filled accommodation. A large master cabin and cleverly designed en-suite will be placed forward. This layout of interior space will provide expansive full width accommodation and with only the foredeck above, natural daylight will flood through overhead glazing. Just as seen on the 58, owners will also be able to transform the single level living and galley space aboard the 50 Targa Gran Turismo into an open-air space. The powered roof will glide open and a top hinged window will open up the galley area for Al-fresco serving. This will also enable guests to enjoy the freedom of fresh air from the galley to the transom. Other significant features which will be available include an innovative, concealed mechanised tender launch for Williams 325 Jet RIB to provide a safe, clean and open transom. A powered aft sunshade option will provide protection for the sociable and aft cockpit seating, which also converts into a sunpad at the touch of a button. This offers owners the flexibility to select a layout to suit the needs of their guests in the moment. Speeds and engine options for the 50 Targa GT has as yet not been announced.

33rd Americas Cup - Deed of Gift Challenge Preview

After many court battles the 33rd America's Cup finally arrives what is to be a Deed of Gift best of three races. Though it seems even after the racing on the water is passed, it is not sure we have seen the end of the tunnel for this legal battle filled edition. As there is still some pending issues to resolve between the two teams like the manufacturer of country of origin regarding the sails of Swiss Defender team Alinghi.
Coming from the successful 32nd edition the climax from Summer 2007 has been about USA challenging team Oracle declaring the Swiss defender Alinghi is twisting the rules in its favour, and going against the Deed of Gift of the America's Cup, thanks to an accommodating Challenger of Record. So far we have seen the USA team winning all cases in the New York Supreme Court, and from there onwards a deed of gift challenge with a maximum aloud size of craft to ninety by ninety feet was started. While it looked at some time that the two would resolve there issues it never had to be. The first Supreme Court battle was about if Desafio was an accredited Challenger of Record or not. This was the first legal win in a triumphant New York Supreme Court challenge by BMW Oracle. After this other important court rules included the gigantic BOR90 of Oracle waterline length, keel, and if Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates the place chosen by Defender Alinghi was an accepted venue for a Deed of Gift race. As we today know this venue has not been accepted, and after Alinghi flirted with Australia to give a Winter Southern hemisphere race, the choice as the judge suggested finished on Valencia.
So this is a very small review of what happened in the last two and half years, and coming Monday 8th February if provided with accepted weather conditions we will have the first of a best of three races. There seems to have been a chance of more races then a best of three, in a five or seven format, but the defender has declared it to be a best of three challenge. Whatever it will be, I sincerely hope that when this is finished we can go back to a similar format as seen in the previous three editions of the cup, which where super entertaining. The cup will also be widely visible in TV with two billion reachable viewers, plus a free live broadcast online on the official site of americascup.com.

Sandwich Infusion?

My above title obviously relates to sandwich core construction, along with vacuum infusion method to build boats. Sandwich construction has been part of fiberglass boat building since it was brought to the masses in the sixties. Its first use was with marine ply reinforcements mostly in the stern. Later on came balsa used for the decks topsides first, on hull sides later and some also applying it to the bottoms. Then came foam used mostly on decks and super structure, and in the last decade plus we have the modern PVC closed cell foams which can be used in all parts of a boats construction. Vacuum infusion invented officially in early nineties is an innovative way of applying resin which helps use less material, reduces styrene pollutants in the air, and save more resin. While this today is voluntary do not be surprised that when the economy pulls out of the recent down turn for this to be made legal in developed countries. Mostly due to environmental issue foremost, with boat builders building in these places having to make the change to infusion glass resin method.
The quality and advantages of PVC coring and infused methods are known but seeing the hull failures that have happened in recent times the error compared to the old way of building seems also much more dangerous. The yacht building industry and those who certify it should also make certain that each construction way is controlled to the limits of use, and that the buyer can have a safe passage with his boat, especially when this relates to offshore sea usage like CE B or A standards. Modern cores and vacuum infusion building saves weight and give similar strength to the old method but it is also seems to be less fool proof during its building stages and requires more professional highly rated trained workers. Those who certify the industry should make sure that this is happening at the factories and yard where boats are built. Or else if these hull failures continue to spring up we can say that the building standards for leisure boats are actually non existent, and are just make up to amuse the new inexperienced boatman. Not a good sign for an industry where fun and peace of mind have to be together.

Cigarette Prepare for Battle

For 40 years, Cigarette, the icon for all go-fast boats has built its reputation on quality, performance and visual appeal. From boats to it’s sometimes risqué advertising, the allure of a Cigarette has been sex appeal and a commanding appearance. However, as the country's defense market grew supporting the Homeland Security, military and law enforcement segments, Cigarette prepared to serve its country. The company developed a "Military" version of its 39 Top Fish center console, providing a utilitarian, no-frills approach to changing a custom fishing boat into a sturdy, top-quality work boat. The cockpit was designed with an all-digital console including GPS and navigation. The arrangement of the dash wraps around the cluster of instruments for ideal visibility. Throttles and trim tabs are practically located for ease of operation; the custom hard-top and support mechanisms remain as in all Cigarette center console models. The custom seating is notable, utilizing Stidd Systems, a leading manufacturer of ergonomic marine seats. The model used was originally developed for the US Navy Seals' boats and was modified exclusively for Cigarette to provide the proper center of gravity for the passengers and boat. The shock-mitigating seats are uncoated aluminum, with high-tenacity polyester upholstery, covering a proprietary foam base, providing safety for long duration and open water transit. Cigarette's construction team also created a custom support for the seats to provide optimal comfort, strength and durability in rough seas. The boat is Mercury powered, as with all Cigarettes, and for its Top Fish, Cigarette prefers either triple or quadruple Verado 6-cylinder engines. The Military boat is equipped with triple 300's-providing smooth acceleration, reliability and fuel-efficient power.

Pershing Yachting Cup Cortina

Everything is in place for sea lovers’ most eagerly-awaited winter appointment. The 2010 Ski Yachting Team Cup, the combined sailing-skiing challenge organised by Yacht Club Cortina d'Ampezzo, will be held from 29th to 31st January. This year, changes have been made to the organisation of the event. The trophy will lead to nomination of the team which best demonstrates its skill both on the snow, between the gates of a huge slalom, and in the water, amongst the buoys of a regatta course. Sponsor par excellence for the second year running will be Stardom, exclusive distributor of the Pershing brand for Italy, which has renewed its commitment to support an event which awards the most authentic of sporting values. The reliability trial will be the highlight of the event on Saturday, 30th January, during which each team will aim to repeat the times of each of the two rounds held on the same routes. The two best times will be noted down. Consequently, this is not a true race of speed, but rather a testing bench, where technical skill and strategy are the decisive elements for drawing up the rating of the skiing stage. The second part of the event, on the other hand, will take place this summer, on occasion of the main stages of the Melges 20, Melges 24 and Melges 32 regatta circuits, the most widespread, competitive sailing classes. An original, and indeed unique idea, the aim of which is to strengthen the close ties uniting the worlds of skiing and sailing, which have the same essential values: speed, a competitive spirit and a passion for new challenges. Lastly, when the alpine stage of the event comes to a close, an exclusive party will be held at the Cristallo Palace Hotel, seat of the YCCA clubhouse and an important reference point for all Stardom clients, present all year round with its own area. This will be the opportunity to award those members of the Yacht Club who distinguished themselves during the year, and present the Pershing Trophy to the top positions in the three ratings. Team work, an extraordinary performance and passion make Pershing and Stardom ideal partners, placing the very best of technology, total reliability and constant innovation at the service of sport.

Riviera Creditors Meeting

At a meeting held today in Brisbane the creditors of Riviera, Australia’s largest luxury boat builder, voted in favour of a Deed of Company Arrangement (DOCA) that will see all current and former employees receive their full entitlements and a dividend paid to unsecured creditors. During the receivership the operations of Riviera have been restructured to achieve greater efficiency and continued production of high quality Riviera vessels. The DOCA is a further step in restructuring Riviera and enabling it to trade in its own right, outside of formal administration processes. In effect, completion of the terms of the DOCA will bring to an end the official appointment of Voluntary Administrators to Riviera. This will allow the receivers and Riviera management to continue to improve and grow the Riviera business. This significant agreement was reached with overwhelming support from creditors for the DOCA covering five trading entities within the Riviera Group of companies. The DOCA covers the current Riviera trading entities; Riviera Marine (INT.) Pty Limited, R Marine Pittwater Pty Limited, Riviera Runaway Bay Pty Limited, Riviera Coomera Pty Limited and Riviera Marine (MFG) Pty Limited. The eight remaining, non trading entities of the Riviera Group are no longer required given the corporate rationalisation and restructuring of the group and so are not included in the DOCA. Under the terms of the DOCA, former employees of the Riviera DOCA companies will receive all of their unpaid wages, superannuation, annual leave and any relevant redundancy payment. Current Riviera employee’s entitlements will continue to accrue and be available to those employees in the ordinary course of business. Creditors will also benefit from the terms of the DOCA with a dividend being paid to unsecured creditors. Under the terms of the DOCA, former employees entitlements will be paid by the Receivers and Managers by April 30, 2010 and funds will be paid to the Administrators by 30 June 2010 to enable a dividend to be paid to unsecured creditors. This will result in the Riviera DOCA companies coming out of administration.

Team leader Bruno Kishtoo was awarded the Workplace, Health, Safety and Environment Star Performer award for the 4th quarter for his leadership qualities and attention to detail when it comes to safety issues. Both Cassandra and Bruno outshone Riviera’s 300 staff when they were named overall Star Performer and WHS and E Star Performer of the year at a special lunch held this month at Riviera’s Coomera facility. Riviera’s WHS and E manager Cherriee Ludemann said it was Cassandra and Bruno’s ‘can do’ attitude that earned them the prestigious award. Both will have the chance to experience the excitement at one of the annual boat shows with Cassandra travelling to the Auckland International Boat show in March and Bruno heading off to the Melbourne Summer Show in February. Cassandra said the win took her by surprise but it was great to be recognised. Bruno said the competition was tough and he was overwhelmed when his name was announced as the overall winner. Bruno will go to the Melbourne Summer Boat Show in February as reward for his hard work and commitment to health and safety. The nominations for Star Performer for 2009 were: Patsy Johnson, Erin Cook, Sue Kelly, Cassandra Meyers and Kris Hanney. The nominations for Workplace Health and Safety and Environment Star Performer for 2009 were: Jesse Paler, Brad Weigel, Sean Drysdale, and Bruno Kishtoo.

Sessa Kicks Off Year with Success

Sessa kicks off the New Year with a huge success. Their C38 wins the award for best sport cruiser, in the less than 45 foot category. After the C68 victory at the Festival de la Plaisance di Cannes 2009, Sessa Marine reaffirms their position as one of the most active and award winning boat builders in the world. In the past few years, Sessa has created a number of unique and dynamic sport cruisers that combine style with quality to offer the best value for money in their price range. Riccardo Radice, co-owner of Sessa Marine said that to win such an award in London, and to have three boats from the range all nominated, is both immensely satisfying and motivating for the shipyard, it’s dealers and specially for the project team, led by Christian Grande and Massimo Radice. Sessa also won this category in England two years ago with the C46.

Sunseeker Recognized as Product of Civilization

Sunseeker International, the world's largest privately owned yacht builder, has been credited within a recent article in The Times newspaper as the manufacturer of a product 'of importance in civilization'. The article by Stephen Bayley, titled 'Britain should be a workshop, not a casino' and published on 11th January, suggested that since 1980 just three British companies, one of which is Sunseeker, could be considered suitable for such an accolade. He endorses the entrepreneurial spirit of the UK manufacturing industry and recognises the process of "making real products" is "far superior" to business, which sets out to maximise financial return without designing or building anything. Sunseeker International is this year celebrating the 50th anniversary of the incorporation of Friars Cliff Marine Limited, the company from which Sunseeker International was developed from a dinghy and outboard sales company, to one of the world's leading luxury motoryacht brands. In a difficult market Sunseeker has maintained its status as the UK's largest production boat builder and last year reported a turnover of £310 million.

Sunseeker Hosts Swing at London Boat Show

During the late-night open evening at the London International Boat Show on Thursday 14th January at Excel, Sunseeker International, the world's largest privately owned yacht builder, hosted a special program of entertainment on its stand (S040), including performances from musical ensemble, the Rat Pack, and performance troupe, the Hollywood Hoppers. The Rat Pack is a nine-piece band with vocals who will play a wide selection of music including swing, jive, Latin and retro pop tracks. Dancing with the Rat Pack was the Hollywood Hoppers, an authentic Lindy Hop performance troupe. The Hoppers are an enthusiastic group of professional and semi-professional dancers who specialize in re-creating the dances from the roaring '20s, through the swinging '30s and '40s, to the rock & roll 1950s. They are choreographed by UK Champions, Robert and Claire Austin, who base their routines on moves from original footage to create a dynamic and exciting show. Joining them was the Adagio Statues, two 'marble' statuesque figures set on a classical white podium who very slowly come to life through a mesmerizing fusion of strength, grace and fluid movement.
