Project: Atlantic 56 Twin Deck

Commissioned by Atlantic Yachts, to a design by Vripack Naval Architects of Sneek the dutch builder and design firm developed an entirely new project model, the 56 Twin Deck. In a market where there is much competition, but also much of the same type of yachts, Atlantic with the help of Vripack sets to brings a revolutionary motor yacht. For example Atlantic has asked to the design firm to do everything finished as flush with the surface as much as possible but also other items set to leave an uncluttered deck as the anchor assembly concealed below deck, fenders storage, concealed hydraulic passarelle gangway, and aft garage for a three metre plus tender. The 56 Twin Deck accommodation layout below deck offers a two or three double cabin choices, and still featuring the much desired mid ship owner's suite with its own separate shower and toilet. Next door to the owners cabin is also an utility room with washing machine and a separate dryer. To fore there is the VIP cabin with a luxurious double bed. On the starboard side fore there is a room that can be specified as a third cabin with double bunk berths or alternatively as a study office. A second head features to fore port side, this also having a washing machine. In the centre of the lower accommodation deck there is the C-shaped sofa to starboard with a fully equipped galley opposite. Above on the main deck is the living area with a central fully equipped pilot station to fully control the 56 Twin Deck, and to port side there is a round settee with two luxurious club chairs. The wheelhouse here is also fitted with a panoramic, electrically operated sliding roof, completely flush concealed. The Atlantic 56 Twin Deck also has a spacious aft deck with an aft bench where the lounge table can be stored, which also features easy connection to the side decks leading to fore, here having a big sun-deck with underneath storage space. The 56 Twin Deck will be powered with IPS600 D6 435hp engines.

New Model: Colombo 37 Alldays

Big expectation awaits the Colombo 37 Alldays, which is the first complete new model to come out from owners Sarnico Group after taking over the legendary Italian Lake Como boat builder in 2007. Sarnico Group gave the duties of the new Colombo to design firms they have been working with for a long time which are Nuvolari Lenard for the upper structure who are collaborators since the 1995 introduced Sarnico 45, and Brunello Acampora from Victory for the hull. The 37 Alldays also represents a new direction for the Colombo shipyard but also for boats in this highly competitive size. The shape in itself is may be actually a bit tad reminiscent of the Sarnico designs with the wood giving compliments to the Giacomo Colombo legacy. Wood is actually a predominant feature of the looks outside not only for the teak which is featured in all the deck from fore to aft, but also in the stern transom, toe rail, and the distinctive hand rail. The new Colombo also surprises in its comfort being in this area also a top category boat, thanks to its wide beam, but also to the intelligent use of space. If someone knows Colombo the previous models where actually never renowned for there spaces, but more a testament to rich materials and super high class finishing details. Accommodation wise the new Colombo offers a two cabin interior below decks with owners cabin to fore, and a three berth guest cabin to mid ship this also enjoying spectacular views thanks to large triangle shape view windows. A separate bathroom with shower, head serves both cabins. The living area of the 37 Alldays is all on the main deck, with a spacious aft deck cockpit served by a settee, and a galley and C-shaped saloon inside. This part protected to inconvenient weather by a hardtop which features a glassed opening sunroof, and a fully retractable patio door. Furniture wood for hull number one is white oak wood. Power for the 37 Alldays is by twin Volvo 300hp diesel engines, propelled with the easy to use IPS pod drives. Speeds are a wide open throttle of 33 knots, and a cruise of 28 knots at half load.

Propulsion: Konrad 560 Twin Prop

Konrad Marine of Hudson, WI USA is proud to introduce the latest addition to its robust 500 Series, the Konrad 560 Twin Prop. This stern drive package was designed to handle gasoline or diesel engine torque and was engineered to gain efficiency by sharing the torque load with dual propeller technology. Counter rotating propellers reduce propeller roll, greatly increasing low speed maneuverability for superb docking and substantially improving handling in reverse. The 560 reduces propeller slip, increasing fuel economy and top speed. With its state of the art engineering and highest quality components, the 560 is capable of exceeding commercial market demands. The Konrad 560 Twin Prop drive features two, one piece stainless steel propeller shafts, fitted with line protection seals. The specially designed stainless steel propellers vary in pitch up to a 16“ maximum diameter. The major components are manufactured in-house at Konrad, including the gear sets of high grade aircraft quality steel, heavy duty drive shafts and high quality, heat treated aluminum castings. To ensure customer satisfaction, Konrad tests all their stern drives for heat, noise and vibration prior to leaving their plant. Konrad’s 560 Twin Prop counter rotating drive is based on the military proven 520 with a heavy duty transom assembly. The 560 twin prop offers boat enthusiasts a complete propulsion system for the rigors of recreational and commercial duty on single engine vessels weighing up to 11,000 lbs. The 560 and all other Konrad stern drives are made in the U.S.A.

Project: Tiara 4300 Open

Announcing it last September and giving a sneak preview of the project during the latest Fort Lauderdale show, Tiara finally present the renderings and give some details for the new 4300 Open. As is expected the new flagship of the Open series obviously reflects its predecessors, like the 4200 the model it replaces, and the 3900 Open which was launched just a year ago. The 4300 Open also represents future generations of the line, having an outstanding standard and optional equipment features list, and is equipped to make both fishing and cruising use. New Model: Prestige 39 Flybridge Line

Designed by Italian Garroni above with under water hull shape by Michael Peters, the new Prestige 39 Flybridge holds her own while featuring the element, innovation, onboard comfort, and the seaworthiness that have forged the success of this French brand. Aboard the Prestige 39 Flybridge, innovation can be found in the design concept, called by the French builder as Opening on the Sea comfort. This new medium sized motor cruiser offers an all new flybridge design, and a clever layout of the two cabins, both served with personal shower head compartments. The open to the sea comfort from Prestige is confirmed in many areas like the flybridge area up top, wrap around windscreen reminiscent of the new 60 flagship in the living internal saloon, and the big view windows featured in the fore owners suite. Prestige since a year now a separate and unique brand, gives again the hull design of the new 39 Flybridge to renowned Michael Peters. The US designer is credited as being one of the best Vee hull shape designers of recent times, and is responsible for six out of nine models showing how much sea keeping is of a big importance to Prestige. Part of the Beneteau Group, Prestige thinks of the new 39 Flybridge as becoming a leader in her size category of a flybridge Motor Cruiser under forty feet. Surely it will be a big contender for top spot, although competition from other brands who are looking back to the smaller sizes seems to make things more interesting to the buyer.

Boat Review: Galeon 640 Fly

Presentation
When Galeon launched the 640 Fly in the middle of last year the 2008, the company extended it size by eleven feet coming from the previous bigger 530 Fly model. The 640 Fly continued the Polish builder voyage to bigger sizes and with this following the relationship with renowned British architect Tony Castro, who did a complete job for the current second in size Galeon model, designing hull, exterior lines, and interior layout plans. Castro has so far designed five models of the current Galeon model line up, with four of these always being a new flagship. For the 640 the British designer and Galeon created a very interesting good looking nineteen metre motor yacht set to challenge the best in the market for a couple of unique reasons. First is surely the four cabins plus crew accommodation plan, a rarity in this size especially since most builders started concentrating there spaces resource for the mid ship located full beam owners suite, a luxury the 640 Fly made sure not to miss. Other reasons are also the thirty knots plus speeds with the small engine choice which goes whisker short of forty knots from the bigger option, the luxurious details giving exquisite comforts in all area, and last is surely the sea keeping capability of the Tony Castro vee shape hull.
Accommodation
The 640 Fly welcomes you in the spaciousness of its exterior spaces with a large bathing platform aft which stows a tender on top and which is lowered by a hydraulic crane hidden in the aft stern bulkhead, or by the optional Opacmare Transformer which apart from making launching retrieving toys as easy as it gets also creates and makes the area become a semi submerged beach in or just above the water. The yachts aft deck features a C-shaped settee located centrally, where from it is possible to connect to the fore part with two steps leading to the side decks where is located a two person sunbathing area, and to the flybridge via the integrated stair case located to port. The flybridge offers a wet bar small galley featuring a BBQ grill with sink, C-shaped settee to starboard, a big solarium to fore for three or four adults, and the helm station to starboard. For those who think they can never get enough of the flybridge it is also possible to equip the area with a retractable hard top.
Passing through the patio door you are welcomed in the rich atmosphere of luxury wood finishing complimented by lights and unique stars head liners of the interior. Here the split level saloon presents a C-shaped settee to port, and opposite settee for three to starboard in the lower area. Two steps up lead you to the raised part which has the fully equipped galley to port also in a C-shape, opposite dining C-shaped settee, and a single or double seated helm station. From the starboard by the pilot station it is possible to go from a side door directly on to the deck.
From a centre corridor and down a set of five steps leads you to the accommodation deck below featuring four cabins, and three guest heads two of which en-suite for the owner and VIP rooms. The first cabin to welcome you below is the guest fourth cabin with two L-shaped berths and also being the smallest bedroom on board, to fore is the VIP suite, and to starboard we have the third guest cabin with two in line berths. In between this cabin, and the VIP suite is the third shower head which services the two single cabins. The owner suite located centrally and to mid ship is reachable going down three further steps and here we find a central located queen size double berth along the hull port side, a shower head to aft, wardrobe, and a desk breakfast table for two with a part of this transforming to a relaxing chaise lounge. To aft is the crew cabin equipped as standard with a single berth, separate shower head and an utility area.
Performance
Tony Castro who before this has designed the 440, 530 models for the Polish builder is renowned for fast sea worthy hulls having a deep to moderate vee hull with close to twenty degrees deadrise aft. Castro has designed the 640 Fly hull with a deeper vee to fore, and moderate to seventeen degrees deadrise aft. Castro made no use of semi propeller tunnels this being to obtain low planning speeds in mid ten knots, which can be of good use to keep a comfortable ride in big head seas. Galeon offers three engine choices for the 640 Fly all being by MAN and start with a standard twin V10 1100hp, optional V12 1224hp, and going up to the more powerful V12 1360hp. The 640 Fly has top speeds of 32 knots with the smaller 1100hp choice, 34 knots with the 1224hp, and 37 knots with the 1360hp. Range is an approximate of 300 nm at 28 knots with the standard 1100hp choice, and 290 nm at 30 knots with the 1224hp. Full data with the larger 1360hp choice is not so far available.
Positive
Four cabins
Full beam owners suite
Bathing platform transform functions
Negative
Small flybridge dinette
Competition
In this ten boat range competition and size the Galeon 640 Fly is unique to have its fourth cabin with L-shaped format, therefore being the roomier of the bunch. The Astonoda 66 GLX was among the first to offer four cabins with full beam owners cabin in this size, while the Aicon 64 and smaller Princess 62 both in production for over three years are the most successful. The semi custom Carnevali 65 has no full beam owners cabin, and the fourth cabin has a separate entrance. Criteria for competition was flybridge motor yacht, length overall from nineteen to twenty metres, and four cabins.
Aicon 64 Flybridge - good seller with optional four cabins layout a deal breaker
Astondoa 66 GLX - Spanish presented in 2000 to Italians Nuvolari Lenard design
Carnevali 65 - semi custom, available as 68 with extended platform
Dyna 65 - Taiwan with EURO looks, standard bunk fourth cabin
Hatteras 64 Motor Yacht - US legend, optional four cabin but no crew cabin aft
Ladenstein 68 - Austria company Thai build, optional four cabin, longest
Leonard 66 - Italian built Carlo Trezzi design, bunk fourth cabin optional
Princess 62 - smallest of the Group, standard four cabins a success
Uniesse 65 My - seaworthiness, quality, standard four cabin with bunks fourth
WILD CARD: Riviera 61 Enclosed Bridge - sportfish, four cabins but two are bunks
Conclusion
Improving, each step at a time, with always better quality. This is in synthesis what Polish Galeon has done in the last decade with each new bigger model representing a leap forward in the standard. When I first saw a Galeon about eight years ago, the boat which was an eight metre flybridge motor cruiser had many interesting features but was also in need of improvement in other areas. Today the Polish company has done among the most amazing quality overhauls to its brand name in recent years, and can challenge the best of European boat builders, with a product which looks, and most of all feels good. The 640 Fly presented last year has been another big leap forward for Galeon, which thanks to its five years plus collaboration with British Tony Castro gets close to full marks in all departments. Apart all this which for the current buyer is interesting but not a deal breaker, the designer and builder made sure to make the 640 Fly stand out from the competition with a spacious interior which offers the largest fourth cabin in the category, and with the bigger MAN 1360hp engines option giving also among the higher speeds in this size. These surely at nineteen metres put the 640 Fly in pole position in this size flybridge motor yacht backed out by a very high standard in finishing, construction, design, and hull shape.

New Model: Austin Parker AP42 Open

Founded in 1998 Austin Parker has been at the period one of the first European and Italian builders to concentrate its production on Down East Lobster Traditional Cruiser looking models. Today a decade later and after stopping its production for a couple of years the Italian Austin Parker returns to the market thanks to new investors in its holding, and with this present a more modern interpretation of the Traditional Down East Cruiser, with renowned architect Fulvio De Simoni behind the design of the new AP42 Open. For me having been a follower to De Simoni works since he started it was interesting to see how the designer handled the looks for a Traditional American Cruiser. I obviously like what I saw and seems that Austin Parker agree with me as they have apparently commissioned the jobs of three bigger models to De Simoni. The Austin Parker AP42 Open offers an interesting mix of traditional concepts with modern utility like the flush deck cockpit, or the modern big view windows in the master cabin to fore. Accommodation for the AP42 is an owners suite to fore, and L-shaped sofa, this alternatively can be changed to an optional second guest cabin. The AP42 Open is powered by twin Yanmar 480hp engines which give a top speed of 34 knots and a fast cruise of 30 knots.

Projects: Mirage 32 Flybridge, Mirage 32 Sedan

While maintaining that same incredible running surface that has built the Mirage brand over the last twenty years, a project of a new 32 is underway in Florida. The new Mirage 32 Flybridge will have a noticeably different look and many improved features like Volvo IPS, dual station, open express style design, lots of protected seating, no need of tower, and a comfortable upper driving station. The 32 Flybridge while coming from Southern US coast Florida will also have a generous Carolina style bow flare, and a classic tumble home at the stern. Other noticeable improvements will be a lowered cockpit floor, providing for more gunwale height, rear entry into an expanded cabin, molded transom live-well, and power options to suit just about everyone. Accommodation is a double vee shaped berth to fore complimented by a separate shower head, and a galley. Power options are various and can be from twin diesel with in line shaft propulsion or Volvo IPS. Standard power is Volvo IPS400 D4 300hp engines with Mirage estimating a speed of 40 knots max with this version, and a 28 knots cruise to the 22 degrees deadrise hull. Just after presenting the Flybridge project US Florida based builder Mirage shows a new version with the 32 Sedan. This new Sedan version is all identical to the Flybridge but as the title says misses the second helm station flybridge option. Apart this the 32 Sedan has the same interior, options and speed and also shares the deep vee hull with a 56 degrees entrance bow and 22 deadrise aft. For those dedicated Sportfishers a full tower with second station up top can be fitted to this version. The tower increases the height to the Fly Bridge version by about one metre. The Mirage 32 Flybridge should be splashed and ready in time for the coming Miami show in February.

Project: Viking 70 Convertible

The computer-operated five-axis profiles have been busy at Viking cutting new plugs from which molds are made. Most recently, the profilers have begun producing parts for the latest Viking, the 70 Convertible, which launches in summer 2010. The new 70 enjoys a familial resemblance to its siblings the flagship 82 and just presented 76. The aggressively raked stem featuring better than eight feet of free board forward is designed to make small work out of those big head seas typically encountered offshore when hunting marlin. Likewise, the free board is a subtle indication of the significant headroom beneath the flush foredeck. The sheer line is pure sweetness that tapers aft to three-feet of free board in the cockpit for ease of releasing and tagging bill fish and tuna. A black metallic mask wraps around the front of the deck house seamlessly transitioning into the darkly tinted windows that terminate in teardrop fashion. The distinguished profile is further honed with molded in feature lines intercepting the curvy smoothness of the flying bridge and deck house. Curves also highlight and accentuate the 208 square-foot cockpit with its observation mezzanine that provides ample stowage, multiple freezers, an insulated refrigerated drink box in the salon entrance step, plenty of drawers, and engine room access. The lower cockpit provides a well sized fish box, a stowage compartment and an available live well beneath the molded nonslip sole. A transom fish box live well also is available. The tournament proven center console helm on the flying bridge delivers acute visibility to each point of the compass. Three adjustable Murray Products helm seats with teak ladder backs are standard. Additional seating is provided with port and starboard lounges each with rod stowage below and aft facing jump seats. Ahead of the command console is a third lounge, as well as a sink, freezer and drink box cooler. Entered through an electrically operated sliding fiberglass door, you are greeted with an immense salon that is both inviting and elaborately appointed with designer furnishings, window treatments and custom valances. Overhead LED lighting sets the mood while natural light streams in from the salon sides and aft bulkhead windows. A day head is strategically located for convenience. Fishing rods and other gear stows handily and are readily accessible beneath the L-shape sofa to starboard. The sofa faces the entertainment center to port with a fifty inch flat screen television and Bose Lifestyle 48 system with custom surround sound. A Moritz OctoPlex screen monitor manages electrical needs at the touch of a finger. The galley island features a granite counter, under counter refrigeration, three bar stools and is adjacent to the dinette that seats four. Forward, the galley offers the convenience of world class appliances, a walk-in pantry, plus multiple drawer and locker stowage. Below, the four-stateroom, four-head layout utilizes space for maximum comfort and privacy, including a most spacious master suite and private access to the crew quarters via the engine room and cockpit. Like the most recent Vikings, the new 70 shares a refined running surface with a convex deadrise shape with sharpened waterline sections to showcase stability and sea keeping ability. The convex deadrise adds curvature and form to the hull bottom and the wide beam, which carries well aft. In addition to supplying considerable buoyancy and lift, re-entry at flank speeds will be soft enhancing a comfortable dry ride. The 70 Convertible will have chilled water air conditioning, a Delta-T engine room ventilation system and utilize Viking’s proprietary VIPER (Viking Independent Programmable Electro-hydraulic Rudder) steering, which also is used aboard the 82 and 76 Convertibles. The VIPER system eliminates the tie-bar for independent rudder operation to optimize response and reduce rudder drag at all throttle settings for remarkable maneuverability. The 70 Convertible will be offered with Caterpillar, MAN, and MTU power.

New Model: Absolute 42

Listening to the voice of its clients Italian boat builder Absolute presents the 42, what is a fully enclosed and extended version of the 40 launched last year. The 42 also follows the theme of a full enclosure: hard top and patio door as seen on the bigger 52, 70 and the new 64 Absolute models. The demand for this model came from Northern European clients and from Mediterranean owners who wanted what was seen in the 40 but with the ability to be used 365 days a year. Absolute replied quickly to the demands and modified the 40 aft deck, and extended its bathing platform to present the 42. The new second in size Absolute makes quite a revolution of the 40 having two saloons sitting areas inside: one on the main deck, and an another below, plus an extra C-shaped settee aft for dining Al fresco this replacing the sun pad garage aft as used on the 40. Another important change comes also from the power and propulsion options of the 42, which unlike the 40 only available with stern drive, is also available with two IPS pod choices. IPS now powers seven out of eight Absolutes, which if my memory serves me correct, makes the Italian builder the major user of Volvo's pod propulsion since its introduction in 2006.
Technical Data:

Project: Grand Banks 46 Eastbay SX

Grand Banks present the project for the 46 Eastbay SX bringing all the acclaimed performance, grace and reliability of her predecessors, and then goes one great leap further, adding the revolutionary ZF Zeus propulsion system. With joystick docking, pod-drive power and a range of intelligent innovations, the 46 Eastbay SX offers an unrivaled combination. The 46 Eastbay SX standard main deck plan features a galley-down layout. In the salon, a U-settee sits to port surrounding a teak high-low table. Opposite is a straight settee, just aft of the Stidd helm seat. Also in the standard arrangement, a bench seat is located opposite the helm chair, fronted by a built-in chart table. The aft salon door opens to a large cockpit with aft-facing padded seating. Standard lower deck in this plan include a down galley to port that is open to light and air from above, across from a starboard-side guest stateroom with two twin berths and single-door entry. Farthest forward is the master stateroom with queen island berth and private en-suite head with enclosed shower. The guest head opens off the starboard side of the companionway. Remarkable for a boat of this size, an amazing storage and utility room sits amidships for added storage, tool room, fishing gear, pantry, laundry with optional washer/dryer or any other purpose that suits your cruising needs. In the optional layout, the galley moves up to the aft end of the salon, with pass-through access to the cockpit through a retractable salon window. To starboard is refrigeration and galley counter top. Between this and the helm seat is more storage and an entertainment center; to port, the main settee and table move forward and sit on a platform for great visibility. The optional layout below is similar to the galley-down version above, except that the guest stateroom layout changes. The berth is replaced by an outboard convertible settee, which can easily pull out to create a berth for sleeping. A fold-up desk is included along the forward bulkhead, and the single cabin door is replaced by sliding pocket doors. Keeping the doors open creates a wonderfully spacious landing, making below-deck accommodations seem even larger. Note that with the convertible office option a second guest head is not available; instead, access to the port-side master head is gained though a second guest entrance off the companionway. Selecting the galley-up main deck option makes room below for a third stateroom and an amazing amount of accommodations for a 46 feet Traditional Cruiser. This three-cabin, two-head layout still maintains the mid-ship storage/utility space as on the standard lower deck. The Grand Banks 46 Eastbay SX will launch early next year.

Improve-it = Silverton 36 Convertible

Since introduced in 2006 pod drives have been in huge demand in recent years, with many boat builders presenting new models, and updates to the current line up by adding the ZF Zeus or the Volvo IPS units as optional. US boat builder Silverton presents the option of the Volvo IPS on its successful two cabin 36 Convertible Sportfish Cruiser the fall of this year. While on the update of the propulsion drive, Silverton also presented officially the 36 Convertible with the more luxurious owner cabin to fore, now featuring a central island berth. For the remaining the interior accommodation plan remains unchanged with a twin settee saloon, L-shaped galley, double bunk guest cabin, head, and a separate shower room. So along the diesel powered twin Yanmar 315hp propelled with in line shafts, the 36 Convertible is now available with twin Volvo IPS400 D4 300hp. The IPS option while increasing efficiency and performance also makes marina maneuvering very easy, thanks to the centimeter precise joystick control. While this propulsion choice is very interesting for the 36 Convertible, Silverton also with the new IPS option now moved the engines more aft, to better use the mid ship space especially to what regards the second guest cabin.

Class 1 - Dubai U.A.E. Preview

After five Grands Prix and eight races, the fight for the coveted Class 1 World title has come down to the wire and will be decided next weekend, 10 -12 December, in the final two races of the season in the Emirates/Dubai Duty Free Dubai Grand Prix. With the Victory Team having already secured a remarkable ninth Class 1 World title, the only unanswered question is which of the Dubai-based team’s two thoroughbreds will emerge victorious on their home waters and in front of a partisan crowd and lift the trophy - Fazza or Victory 1?
Just eight points separate Fazza and Victory 1 in what has been a titanic struggle for supremacy all season, with the Championship lead changing hands race-by-race.
Championship leaders, Fazza will start as marginal favourites and hold the bragging rights for race wins this year with six, but Victory 1 with two wins under their belts, put one over their team-mates in Italy to take the European Championship.
Each outfit knows it can beat the other and that each is capable of lifting the crown, and with Victory Team general manager, Gianfranco Venturelli, stating that there are no team orders, Fazza and Victory 1 are set for one last throw of the dice and the stage is set for a winner-takes-all scenario.
With the title and the runners-up slot out of reach, Norwegian Welmax look poised to take third place in the overall Championship standings. A fourth and a third place, their fourth podium of the year, last time out in Abu Dhabi saw them leapfrog Maritimo into third spot, and they now have the luxury of a twenty-point advantage over their young Australian-Norwegian rivals.
Maritimo who finished third overall in the European Championship standings, on the back of three podium finishes, will be hoping to get their season back on track, and that the technical issues that have blighted their last three outings will not be repeated in Dubai and allow Foresti & Suardi Roscioli Hotels to sneak into fourth place.
The target for Giampaolo Montavoci will be to maintain his remarkable run of consistency and points-scoring finishes, a run that began back in 2007 and extends to 23 races as he targets his highest-ever placing and points-finish in the Championship. Montavoci will race with fellow-Italian, Marco Pennesi, and what would bring a smile to his face is the prospect of rough conditions on the leg outside the Palm, which would give the Italian throttleman and rough water specialist a chance to drag the best out of Foresti & Suardi Roscioli Hotels.
Giovanni Carpitella will be joined in the cockpit of Sea Dubai - C.A.M. by Giorgio Manuzzi - making a welcome return to racing after crashing out in Romania when driving Maritimo 12 as the Spanish Team, Duemme Broker, continue their march up the leaderboard. After finishing fourth in the season-opener, then missing the next two Grands Prix, Carpitella returned to take two top-five finishes in Italy, his first Class 1 podium in race 1 in Abu Dhabi followed by a fourth place, to catapult him into sixth place in the overall standings and third in the Middle East Championship.
Giorgioffshore will line up in Dubai looking to at least repeat their third place finish in the Mina Seyahi Grand Prix in Dubai last year. Nicola Giorgi, partnered by the experienced Christian Zaborowski, has already enjoyed a solid season and a string of good results, and will be confident that the team can improve further and build on their best ever qualifying performance in Abu Dhabi, where they finished on the podium after a scintillating lap put them third quickest.
Outgoing double World Champion, Mohammed Al Marri, who stepped down from racing at the end of 2008, but returned to renew race duties alongside Abdullah Al Mehairbi in Victory 7, will be looking to end their eight-race campaign with a flourish and to add to two fourth place finishes and a podium in Italy.
First official practice takes place on Thursday afternoon (10 December), with a one-and-a-half hour session on Friday morning for practice and qualifying in the Edox Pole Position, followed by race 1 in the afternoon, 54.91Nm - 12 laps, including one long lap.A third and final practice session on Saturday morning is followed by race 2 in the afternoon - with the starting line-up determined by the results of race 1 - 68.96Nm, run over 15 laps, including two long laps - with both races counting for full Championship points.

Projects: Beneteau 42 Monte Carlo Hard Top, Beneteau 34 Swift Trawler S, Beneteau 30 Antares S

Beneteau go into the market with three projects, one is completely new, and two are a further development or different versions of recently released models. The completely new model is the 42 Monte Carlo Hard Top shown in rendering above. Sitting in between the 47 launched exactly a year ago in Paris, and the 37, the new 42 fills the gap between these models and is also the eighth member in the Sport Cruiser style Monte Carlo range. With lines designed as all the Monte Carlo range by Italian designer Andreani, the 42 is targeted to combine the fantastic technology of Beneteau's unique patented Air-Step hull with an intelligent comfortable layout. What surprises in the 42 Monte Carlo Hard Top project is how it uses elements from both the 47 and 37. For example the central cockpit and helm station are a good reminder of the smaller 37, while the lower deck takes a lot from the 47 with full beam mid ship owners suite, and VIP cabin to fore. Power for the 42 Monte Carlo Hard Top will be from twin Volvo D6 370hp which combined with the Air Step designed by Beneteau Powerboat team of Patrick Tableau, Maud Tronquez, and Remi Laval from Jeantet and an extended plane underwater should provide a good performance. For easy marina manoeuvring the 42 Monte Carlo Hard Top is also available with the new Volvo stern drive joystick system which makes the difficult moves to the inexperienced owner much easier. The second project presented by Beneteau is the 34 Swift Trawler S what is a new version of the 34 Swift Trawler without a driving position on the flybridge. This new S for Sedan version retains all the characteristics of the Swift Trawler 34 and brings a very different functionality to the flybridge level providing stowage for the tender or any other space consuming objects such as bicycles, windsurfers, etc. This space can also be converted into a magnificent king size sunbathing area. Taking away this change the new 34 Swift Trawler S keeps all the other distinct characteristics of a single engine semi planning Explorer Cruiser with two cabins below, an extra convertible saloon berth, separate shower head, and a galley on the main deck. The third project follows the launch of the Beneteau 30 Antares presented in flybridge version at the autumn boat shows. Now Beneteau attention to clients requests prompts its designers to the project of the 30 Antares S, which will be launched in Düsseldorf on January 2010. Designed for cruising, the boat retains all the advantages of the twin cabin 30 Antares, but gets more lively looks thanks to a sleeker super structure without a flybridge. Sarrazin design group have given the Beneteau 30 Antares S modern, sporty lines, and worked with precision to provide this version with a new roof, including two sliding opening panels. This gives the boat a dynamic look, which endows it with a sporty character.

New Model: Airon Marine 4800 T-Top

Paolo Molinari Airon Marine present the 4800 T-Top, first and smaller model of the two big boat projects presented at the start of this year 2009. The new 4800 T-Top replaces the A47, and is also the new current flagship of the Airon Marine line of 14 models. Designed in house and in the family by Paolo Molinari responsible for the hull, and son Tommaso who did the super structure, the 4800 T-Top has a family feeling with the latest introduced models from the Como boat builder as the 4300 T-Top first of the new generation hard top models, and 400 T-Top introduced last year. As the smaller Airon boats flexibility and variations of the internal layouts is key to this project, which can be offered with a two, three or four cabins, one or two galleys, and one or two saloon interior plans. The standard plan is a three cabin layout with full beam owners stateroom, VIP suite to fore, double bunk guest cabin, two galleys, and a C-shaped saloon on the main deck. The two cabin version replaces the third bunk cabin with a second lower deck C-shaped saloon. Needless to say this is impressive and here the Molinari designers are surely taking the full benefits of the IPS propulsion as never seen before. Speeds are also in line with similar sized models with the IPS600 forward looking dual propeller Volvo pods at 435hp each, propelling the 4800 T-Top to top speeds of 35 knots.

Improve-it = Bertram 410

Bertram Yacht’s improve its 410 by offering two new extra options which enhance the overall experience while out on the open water. Launched in 2007 the Zuccon designed US built Bertram 410 new options include a lower control station and new advanced forward window design. These full wrap around windows maximize visibility and brighten the interior of the salon, creating an open experience that is perfect for entertaining anytime on the main deck. The lower control station option gives also owners the opportunity to navigate from the comforts of the deluxe salon and benefit from unobstructed views of the open waters, especially when the weather above is not so good. First seen on the 540 in Fort Lauderdale 2008, and followed this year with the 511, the lower windshield design has been a much praised revolution in the new Bertram's, and now the Miami company raises the bar by adding it to its smallest entry level flybridge sportfish cruiser.

INBUILD ~ Galeon 340 Fly Part 2 of 4

We continue with part two of Galeon 340 Fly INBUILD. This new Galeon model after being presented as a project in October is set for its World wide launch coming January in Dusseldorf 2010. With the launching date being so close preparation in Poland for the 340 Fly is going full speed, to take the new model at one of the biggest global boat shows as polished and finalized as much as possible. While the prototype hull number one very rarely is a perfect hundred per cent, Galeon staff was explaining that for them to take a new model to a show a ninety out of hundred standard has to be achieved. Here as the picture shows Galeon glass people are preparing the super structure deck after this was released from the mold. As it can be seen by the masking tape we are observing the finishing touches for the non skid surfaces for the fore part of the deck. This part is usually the most used by the crew for securing the boat in the marina, or dropping anchor in some nice anchorage. While a designer normally sets the position of the non slip surfaces in the project, the yard will normally modify this, seeing fit how a crew behaves on deck, and if some areas tend to come out smaller then accepted, these are increased for major safety. The process of the non skid surfaces is normally seen on hull one, and after that the builder modifies the mold, in order to hurry up the process in the following builds.

New Model: Franchini 55 Emozione Open

Basing itself on the 55 Emozione, Franchini present the Open version of this successful model. This new Open represents the third 55 Emozione version, and fourth powerboat in the Franchini line up based on traditional lobster down east hull lines below, and a more Mediterranean Sport Yacht super structure above. There is light difference in the hull looks too, coming from the port holes featured on the ships side instead then on the coach roof as for the standard or fly 55 Emozione versions. The 55 Emozione Open represents a big change of the way to go on the sea, designed for use in the peak Summer season and with wind in your hair experience, as an Open should. The main cockpit deck offers an area of free open spaces added with central settee complimented by a central table dinette, a wet bar located in the centre of this area, and a helm station also located in the middle. Down below we have two cabins, saloon, galley and optional crew cabin. The two suites located to fore and mid ship have a similar size and both have well sized shower heads. Tender stowage is featured in a garage aft. Power is from twin MAN 800hp propelled with traditional reliable in line shafts, which give top speeds of 34 knots and a cruise of 30 knots.

Project: Ocean Yachts 64 Makaira

Makaira is the Latin name for the Marlin fish, and this is how New Jersey boat builder Ocean Yachts names its new innovative Sportfish Yacht to fill the void between its 58 and 73 Super Sport models. A void left empty since the stop production of the 62 Super Sport a couple of years ago. Ocean Yachts has been one of the most successful builders of Sportfish cruisers and yachts thanks to a luxury interior which also gives the ladies a consensus on the choice of there mates. Designed by Applied Concepts Unleashed from Florida renowned for there work with most custom Sportfish Yachts names, the 64 Makaira by Ocean Yachts creates a new brand and wants to hit revolution in this size offering speeds close to the 50 knot mark, light weight but strong construction to challenge the cold molding method, and a superior eight berth four stateroom accommodation. The 64 Makaira shows also a lower windshield design! Will it be real or not? If real Ocean Yachts will be the second major US builder to take this route, although it did not present a wrap around concept as Bertram did, but went for an integrated look. Construction for the 64 Makaira is also different to the other Ocean Yachts models building its new branded Sportfish in a vacuum infused fully cored hull with Corecell, featuring also an infused stringer system which gives the desired finishing and strength. Ocean Yachts say this method will guarantee strength, and a huge saving in weight over the competition. Hull number one is nearly completed so now I think its up to see the new Ocean Yachts 64 Makaira for real, with an official presentation most probably taking place at the Miami show in February.

New Model: Rio 46 Air

Rio presented the hardtop version of there 46 named Air in the Genoa boat show last October. A hard top sport cruiser based on the lines of the 46 Art presented in Naples Posillipo bay in Spring of last year, this also being a further refinement of the 44 model. This new 46 Air follows what we have seen on the Art with the use of Volvo IPS pod propulsion in lieu to traditional shafts, bigger full beam owners cabin with large view windows, and lastly a high low bathing platform adding an extra space for a water toy along the all ready existing garage space. Performance should be along similar numbers of what the open Art version with twin IPS600 engines at 435hp each reached, having a wide open throttle top speed of 38 knots, and a comfortable cruise at 30 knots.

World Wide Web

For the yachting industry the world wide web was indirectly responsible for its growth in recent years just much as easy credit, and James Bond action movies, and only porn, and online gaming might have joyed a bigger Internet help. As all good things but today there is another face to the coin and builders face a new challenge to perfection. A few years ago good marketing, a hard copy brochure, and perfect boat show stands was all it was needed to put yourself on the top. Yes! Most owners use there boats an average of one month a year and usually a crew, the marina, or the yard are responsible for the work and the pain the shiny plastic boat gives! As long as it is good and works, it is perfect.
Today but the World is changed and people before actually buying browse the net, check the forums and discuss this and that with a person they don't know. Yes he surely is talented that guy on forum X as he speaks a lot there and seems to use the strange nautical words as used in the marina. So I better believe what he says! While checking for information is good, I suggest if you are ever in doubt in your ability to put a surveyor on your bill in your boat purchase being it new or used, and to always take what is said on these forums with a pinch of salt. Like anything there is competition and a qualified Mr.X might be disgruntled how company A treated him in the recent past, and supporting better company B who is paying his bills at the moment. Another thing I would qualify as a scam is someone who says horror stories of a yacht brand without actually proofing it with a photograph, or a photo which shows just a bottom or piece of fiberglass.
The facts are that the Internet is a super resource of information, but like any news this has to proven down to facts not just words on a forum or website from someone with a fancy user name. If you think yacht A is the boat, but you hear bad stories get a surveyor to tell you the facts, and if he inspected some boats of the brand you are interested is also better. Remember also the saying: Good news travel but bad ones go faster then the speed of light. I would also add if someone wants to add traffic to his site I am sure it is easier with bad news then with good ones.
