Project: Viking 90 Sky Bridge

Like with any of its models Viking proposes different versions on its platform, and so will be the case with its new upcoming 90 flagship model, which will replace I would say temporary the 92 after 21 units delivered.  Unlike the 92, the new 90 will have a load line of less to 24 meters making it abstain to Selective Catalytic Reduction rules which entered force in 2022.  Selective Catalytic Reduction units need further engine room space and redesigned layouts, with Viking being very vocal against the new rules to fit mandatory converters, and working a lot to delay the entry from 2020 to 22. The Viking 90 will offer a six stateroom layout, highlighted with a full beam owners stateroom at midships.  The Sky Bridge project will differ from the other standard Convertible and Enclosed Bridge versions for offering a fully equipped second helm station up top.  The Sky Bridge replaces the full-tower and makes it safer to reach then a Tuna tower helm, with the advantage that a fully fitted helm station can be equipped.  The Viking 90 is scheduled to debut in early 2023.

Generated from the vision of Team for Design Enrico Gobbi combined with Rossinavi's expertise, Portofino 52 was created with the desire to offer the most pleasant cruising experience in maximum comfort. 52, the metres in length of a yacht optimized to provide the greatest number of experiences that can be enclosed in 499 GT. Versatility of soul and use, best represented by a sundeck of 130 sqm liveable at any time of the day and in all sea conditions. An area for outdoor breakfasts and lunches, an area for sunbathing, an area for cocktails, but also an area for dancing at nightfall, this means sundeck on board the Portofino 52. A beach club where everyone can find their own space, whether it is by the sea after a swim or sipping a drink under the calm reflections of the glazed pool above or enjoying the wellness area with sauna. A layout designed to be family-friendly, in which, in addition to the Owner's suite, there are four guest cabins of the same size, a layout in which there are large meeting and leisure areas, such as the numerous dining areas, lounges and bars that adorn the various decks, or the open-air cinema at the bow of the upper deck. Shapes in which the function is integrated, such as for the tender and toys storage area, located in a hidden and safe position in the bow, under a mechanical cover. A yacht in which the interior blends with the exterior design, through a careful play of natural and artificial lights. Key design features include;130 sqm sundeck, 50% shaded by a hard top; 60 sqm beach club area with spa and gym; glass-bottomed pool, located in the main deck cockpit and equipped with a whirlpool system; full-beam Owner's suite that extends over 50 sqm; tender and toys storage area located on the foredeck; and outdoor cinema situated forward on the upper deck. On the main deck, the large cockpit that welcomes guests on board is made spectacular by a swimming pool with glass floor and forward side. The upper deck cockpit, with such a generous space and largely sheltered from the sun, is ideal for hosting an outdoor dining table. The bow area of the upper deck is used as an outdoor cinema, with six seats and a firepit. Regarding the internal areas, on the main deck we find the main salon and an adjoining dining area. Towards the bow, the full-beam Owner’s suite has been conceived in two different layouts: the first one with a large dressing room at the entrance, the second one featuring a private office. All the main deck areas are extremely enhanced by full-height windows. The sky lounge on the upper deck is also characterized by large glazing, which enhance the panoramic view. In this area there is also an easily served bar with a scenic wine and cigar cellar behind. On the lower deck, the four guest cabins have been designed to have the same size. To provide a larger guest accommodation area on the lower deck, the tender and toys storage area is positioned on the foredeck, protected by an aesthetic and safety cover integrated in the exterior shapes of the yacht. The careful engineering studies made allow Portofino 52 to be an extremely safe and comfortable yacht, even for long voyages and transoceanic routes, thanks also to a state-of-the-art stabilization system and the Rossinavi Zero Noise technology, which drastically reduces the onboard noise and vibrations.  Rossinavi Portofino 52 is to be powered by twin Cats 1499h engines with estimated top speeds up to fifteen knots and a cruise of twelve.

Azimut Cruiser Sinks in Ischia Island

An Azimut flybridge cruiser of twelve meters in length, sank while in its mooring at the marina in Casamicciola Terme, in the Island of Ischia, in the night between the twelfth and thirteenth January.  No one was onboard at the time of sinking. The cause of the sinking are not reported, but in most cases when a boat sinks this way, berthed in its mooring, it would be a failed water-cock of sorts.  Casamicciola Terme is located on the North part of the Island of Ischia, the largest of the three Naples gulf Islands, the other two being the famous Capri, and less famous but pretty Procida.
The boat in this accident is an Azimut AZ36 TrentaSei model, designed by Bernard Olesinski and inhouse by the Italian yacht builder.  The AZ36 was a replacement to the long standing and popular John Bennet designed 37 and was produced from the fall of 1993 till 98.  The AZ36 has a two cabins two head layout, and was powered by twin Cats 306hp or Aifo 300hp reaching top speeds up to thirty knots.  The AZ36 followed a family feeling design to the AZ43 presented in the fall of 1991, and AZ40 in the fall of 92.  This trio of models characterized Azimut entry level line sub fifteen meters from 1992 to 98 in extending the Italian builders international success.  Over one hundred AZ36 where made in a five year production run as the model was replaced by the 39 in the fall of 1998.

Engine: MAN Smart Hybrid

MAN Engines present its Smart Hybrid Experience. This completely new hybrid system marks a turning point when it comes to modern marine drives, and underlines MAN Engines’ status as pioneers in this technology. The electric motor generator unit from the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience can produce a rated power of 184 kW or 368 kW, at an extremely high efficiency rating of up to 96 percent. The permanent-magnet synchronous motor/generator is 160 mm long at 184 kW, or 320 mm at 368 kW. Its diameter is 560 mm. It is positioned on the diesel engine in front of the marine drive and can be separated from the diesel engine by an electromagnetic clutch. This results in a clear advantage for the customer, in that the operating mode can be changed without stopping the engines. In fact, this changeover can be made during operation (including as an emergency function) without interrupting the power, making operation much more convenient. The MAN Smart Hybrid Experience can be combined with all the Man marine engines in the current line from 730hp to 2000hp series, and allows for enhanced power outputs. This enables overall system outputs for each driveline ranging from 474 kW to 1,838 kW (644hp to 2,500hp), from the smallest in-line six-cylinder series to the most powerful V12. Depending on how the components are assembled, the hybrid system can thus account for up to 56 percent of the vehicle’s overall power output. With the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience, MAN Engines is the first engine supplier to offer a complete hybrid system from a single source. MAN Engines supervises shipyards and boat designers from the planning and concept phase through development, consultation on installation and technical implementation including control software, to service and maintenance. This means that B2B partners benefit from more than just intensive consultation and simplified processes throughout all stages. An additional point in MAN Engines’ favour as a system supplier is the perfect coordination of complex components such as diesel engines and electric motors, batteries, power electronics and the on-board voltage system, both with one another and with the application itself. Maximum flexibility and attention to the customer’s needs that is the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience’s motto. Alongside power levels that can be scaled to almost any level thanks to the wide range of diesel engines, the degree of hybrid power can be tailored to the customer and expressed in the system design principles of performance, comfort and efficiency. To achieve this, MAN Engines makes use of a wide range of technically mature series components. All the possible drive configurations such as V-Drive, IV-Drive, parallel drives and down angle can also be connected to the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience. The performance, efficiency and comfort system design principles are tailored to specific applications on the basis of the Zero Emission, Diesel-Electric, Cross-Over, Hotel, Boost and Diesel operating modes. With the main diesel engines, on-board generator sets, high-voltage (HV) batteries and a land connection as power sources, the advantages of the MAN hybrid system (combined or in isolation) can be exploited in a targeted way. This enables, for example, highly economical operation, an increase in range, access to Emission Controlled Areas thanks to emission-free operation, or additional power as a power boost. In hotel mode, the battery capacity can also be used when the boat is docked. The plug-in hybrid’s HV battery is charged via the integrated land connection, and through the diesel engines or on-board generator sets when the boat is on the move. For its MAN Smart Hybrid Experience, MAN Engines uses battery systems from different manufacturers for specific applications, which are connected in series in modules. As high-energy cells, they are designed with a high energy density at a voltage > 600 V, enabling flexible battery operation between 500 V and 750 V in the intermediate circuit. This enables quick charging of the batteries, and provides the basis for major energy consumers such as the boost function. At the same time, the highest safety standards are guaranteed as the drive system has been approved by classification societies.
