New Model: Princess X95

Princess are thrilled to share the first ever X95 images, on her latest sea trial which took place in Plymouth, England this week. As the eagerly anticipated slot hull one of the new X95 nears completion in the Plymouth based manufacturing facility, you can see what sets this innovative new yacht apart from the  pack. Characterized by beautifully sculpted surfaces, with long flowing lines that extend from bow to stern, the X95 defines a striking design language for a new concept of boat while maintaining classic Princess design cues.  The X95 is the first model in the new X Class . Both the flybridge and main deck interior space cover almost the full length of the yacht, creating the a super flybridge as the X Class’s defining characteristic. This new layout provides 10% more outdoor space and 40% more indoor space than a similar sized traditional super yacht. Creating this class-defining yacht from Princess’s design brief was the work of their long standing naval architect, Olesinski, in partnership with legendary Italian design house Pininfarina.  In addition to the X95’s innovative architecture, Princess has made significant steps forward in hull design and the X95 is equipped with an all-new wave piercing bow that extends the waterline forward and provides a fine, high deadrise entry. The hull delivers a 15% improvement in efficiency when compared to a traditional hull design.  On board, the standard guest accommodation for up to eight can be found on the lower deck, comprising a full-beam master stateroom amidships, two twin guest cabins and a double VIP suite forward. However, the first X95 incorporates a five-cabin arrangement with a full beam main deck master suite, plus a non-standard lower deck layout including aft VIP stateroom with adjoining gym room, complete with treadmill and TRX training area.  Other non-standard features on this X95 include the custom exterior paint scheme in Princess midnight blue and inside, a custom saloon layout including family style dining table. She also hosts a drop down projector unit with large canvas cinema screen on the aft flybridge. There is also a bespoke crew accommodation layout to house up to five crew members on board, demonstrating just how flexible the X95 layout really is.  The Princess X95 is powered by twin Man 1900hp engines which give her a maximum speed up to 23 knots. The X95 is yet another innovative new concept for Princess Yachts. The X Class creates an entirely new segment, and while representing a significant step in the Princess new product program, she is absolutely the epitome of British craftsmanship . Princess Yachts are immensely proud of this striking new addition to the range, as she boldly re-writes the rules of yacht design.

Sportfish Yacht Damages Bow in Big Rock 2020

A sixty foot sportfish yacht M/Y Floridian stuffed its bow in following rough seas in the inlet to Morehead City while returning from its fishing run during the Big Rock 2020 tournament on 10 June.  The Atlantic ocean in Morehead City, in North Carolina was pretty rough at the time of the incident with seas having wave height up to three meters and it going against the tide.  The result was a full bow stuffing which resulted in a visible and structural damage, and a short power loss to the sportfish yacht, which thankfully was resumed some seconds later.
The Big Rock is a pretty popular tournament and for its 2020 edition had 146 boats compete in ten days of events and sport fishing from June 5 to the fourteenth.  The main sponsor for the 2020 edition was custom Carolina boat builder Jarrett Bay, with another custom builder Spencer sponsoring the Sunday prize day.  The 2020 edition had a lot of attention, with basket ball legend Michael Jordan competing on his Viking 80 Convertible M/Y Catch 23.
The stuffed sportfish yacht is a Sportsman Custom Carolina 60 build in the cold moulded method in 1990 and powered by twin Man 1100hp with line shaft propulsion, which allow her to reach top end speed of 38 knots.  This Sportsman Custom Carolina 60 has a three cabin with two heads interior and was mainly fitted as a sportfish charter yacht.

The newest addition to Riviera’s Sports Motor Yacht collection, the 64, has just been launched.  Work on the final fit-out is now nearly completed by the skilled team at Riviera, as two years of planning, precision design and engineering by the company’s specialist team nears completion.  The Riviera 64 Sports Motor Yacht is powered by twin Man 1550hp delivering a top speed of more than 30 knots.  Behind her elegant lines is a luxury motor yacht that optimizes onboard space with amenity and functionality.  The 64 Sports Motor Yacht will give boating enthusiasts, particularly blue-water cruising families, the long-term livability and luxury they desire in a 64-foot model. She will also boast equally high levels of sophistication and innovation as her larger 68 and 72 sister models which are now cruising the Mediterranean, Andaman Sea, Bay of Bengal, the Malacca Strait, Java Sea, the Caribbean, the Pacific and New Zealand and Australian waters.  Versatility and practicality are evident from the moment you step aboard the Riviera 64 Sport Motor Yacht, her wide-open cockpit can be optioned for a range of different water sports.  The cockpit leads up to the mezzanine level where to port is an L-shaped day lounge and Al fresco dining will be enjoyed in the L-shaped lounge area to starboard, which includes a drop-leaf teak table.  The mezzanine can be enclosed with optional clears and serviced by air-conditioning ducts for maximum comfort in all-weather conditions considerably extending the living area and creating another room.  The outdoor dinette is the perfect entree for the aft C-shaped galley, which is immediately to starboard inside the 64’s saloon.  Plush seating is provided on the port side of the saloon, with the lounge also storing three director’s chairs to accompany the seating at the starboard-side dinette or for use in the mezzanine dining area.  A side door gives clever and convenient access to the port side deck and fore-deck from the saloon.  The accommodation deck features four staterooms and three bathrooms. The VIP stateroom forward enjoys views from large hull side windows. The VIP en-suite bathroom is located to aft to starboard.  Additional guest accommodation is provided to port with a clever twin single berth cabin that at the press of a button, the inboard berth moves sideways to create a restful double. This cabin also has en-suite access to the port-side day head bathroom. An opulent chaise lounge drinks in views from the port-side window. There is extensive storage areas in this cabin, a highlight being the twin-door robe.  The separate master en-suite is akin to a luxury apartment bathroom, with a double vanity and spacious shower.  From the master en-suite a convenient laundry with separate washer and dryer, offer the ultimate in space utilization for those who like to remain self-sufficient when cruising long term. Owners can alternatively specify a utility room, among other options. An aft bulkhead door in this room provides internal access to the meticulously laid out engine room.  In true Riviera Sports Motor Yacht style, the 64’s fully enclosed bridge will pamper guests like a first-class lounge. It’s the perfect spot to watch the world and the nautical miles go by.  The rear bulkhead opens out to bring the outdoors inside. There’s an additional dinette and wet bar on the rear deck, plus the option of siderail-mounted joysticks. Revealing the vessel’s blue-water pedigree, a molding at the rear of the bridge can house a life raft and safety cell.  Form and functionality combine seamlessly in the superb helm station, which has twin leather seats and central helm. There is a commanding view over the 64’s foredeck, with its versatile, innovative and easily accessed socializing area comprising a C-shaped lounge area and generous floor space. A 3.6-metre tender can then reside in this space when underway, launched by a low-profile davit. This fore-deck design has been exceptionally popular on the larger Sports Motor Yachts. From a practical viewpoint, it also provides a convenient location for storage of fenders, ropes and a home for the pressure cleaner.

Yacht Cargo Ship Almost Capsizes in Palma

A yacht cargo ship m/v Super Servant 4 with five super yachts and some smaller yachts almost capsized in Palma,  Mallorca on Monday 8 June morning.  An electrical fault caused Super Servant 4 to list heavily to starboard.  The fast intervention from the Mallorca Port Authority, which used mooring and tug boats helped Super Servant 4 not to capsize. Thankfully the ship managed to restore its electrical system and operate its bilge pumps, to control the situation.  No pollution has occurred and no person was injured.  Damage on the super yachts is still being evaluated.
Super yacht transport vessels like Super Servant 4, which are large movable floating docks able to carry a dozen or so of very large yachts, are very popular especially to move super yachts in between the important yachting seasons of the Mediterranean which starts in Spring around May, and to that of the Caribbean which starts in mid Autumn just after the hurricane season ends.
Of the yachts onboard I managed to spot M/Y Were Dreams an Amels 52m launched in 2008, M/Y Amor Azur a Palmer Johnson 45.5 m build in 1994, M/Y Celestial a De Beers 41.76m from 1963, a Sanlorenzo SL118, and a Wajer 55 S.

Project: Sanlorenzo SX112

Sanlorenzo continues to present novelties and here the renowned semi-custom and custom yacht and super yacht builder present the project for the SX112.  With 34 meters of length, the SX112 is the flagship of the SX crossover line which launched in 2017 with the 88, and proposes a new way of living on the sea: with barriers on board being eliminated, and the yacht opening to the outside, in a close relationship with the marine context.  The project design has again been assigned to the creativity of Bernardo Zuccon of Studio Zuccon International Project, for the external lines, and Piero Lissoni, art director of the company since 2018, for the interiors.  The focal point of the project is the new stern zone which undoubtedly represents the yacht’s most iconic area. Conceived as a spacious internal beach area, it is directly connected to the outside, allowing the yachtsman to enjoy these spaces in a novel way.  The Sanlorenzo SX112 is to be powered by quadruple Volvo 1000hp with forward looking IPS pod drives with top speeds estimated up to 22 knots. Hull one of the SX112 is nearly completed and should launch in early Summer 2020 for World presentation in the fall 2020 boat shows.

Fire 2020, Here we Go Again

We are still in the midst of a half lock-down but boat fires are the news, especially in the USA.  Five separate boat and yacht fires have been reported in the Florida's in a space of a week, two of which involved multiple boats in different marinas, one was under way, and two super yachts.  You can see the reports in the Out-News section of PowerYachtBlog.
As is usual the social media comments for the fires immediately paint a picture of an owner who could not repay his boat purchase loan, and maintenance fee.  So the easiest solution is always to burn the boat down.  Those with some boating experience give the blame to the no maintenance and checking being made on boats in these lock-down times.
It is true the economic hit with Covid-19 for some will be very hard, but playing the keyboard warrior and immediately speculating does only harm and little good.  I read a report a year ago which stated that 99% of super yacht fires in the last ten years was accidental and 95% of the owners who suffered a total loss incident and got paid back, bought a yacht again.  Interesting factual report which paint a complete different picture to that of what people think when they see a boat burning down.
