Stock Market Float or Not

During the Cannes boat show 2019 pleasure motor yacht and super yacht builder Ferretti Group, which is today made of eight brands; Ferretti, Ferretti Custom Line, CRN, Itama, Mochi, Pershing, Riva, and Wally announced that by the end of the year it was gonna float in the Milan stock exchange.  Ferretti Group is possibly the largest Group as in versatility existing in the yachting market offering a diverse product range from flybridge motor cruisers and yachts, super yachts, sport cruisers and yachts, super sport yachts, traditional cruisers and yachts, and now even performance sailing craft with the purchase of Wally in 2018.
This decision to float was reverted and cancelled less to a month after announcement, with Ferretti Group saying that deteriorating market conditions in the stock market as the prime reason of cancellation.  The Ferretti Group has been very healthy in recent years and onward from 2014.  The Ferretti Group received a 250 million Euros cash injection in 2019 by its major share holders; Chinese Weichai Group, and F Investments of Piero Ferrari.
This decision might have also surprised other boating brands as Princess, Sanlorenzo, and Sunseeker all being rumoured to be interested in floating in the stock market in the near future.  It will be interesting to see if any of these will follow on the plan, or will cancel it completely.  To be fair I think boating and the stock market are a very difficult proposition, due to the volatility of the boating industry, from performing beyond expectations in good times, and going really negative in bad times.  
It is also true though that some have done it with success for many years as Beneteau Group, and Brunswick, and also giant USA boat dealership MarineMax.  But lets be fair, the portfolio of the three above is mostly geared toward the entry level sector of the market where a boat has the price of a medium sized sedan car.  Ferretti Group, Princess, Sanlorenzo, and Sunseeker are into the luxurious part of the market, where some of the entry level models cost you the price of a new luxurious sedan car just for general maintenance in a year.

Ferretti Custom Line Awarded for Social Media Excellence

Custom Line is gaining new fans every day, also on the Web. Fraucher Wins Best of Boats Award

Once again the Frauscher Shipyard, headquartered in Ohlsdorf Austria, can look back on a very successful year. The boat builders were able to significantly increase their business volume and again achieved a record revenue in fiscal year 2018/19. As an absolute highlight, the premium brand Frauscher won the Best of Boats Award 2019 with its new flagship, the 1414 Demon Air, last Thursday evening.


Hylas Partners with VesselVanguard

Hylas Yachts, a leading builder of bluewater cruising yachts, signed an agreement with VesselVanguard, the leading maintenance management solution for boat owners and manufacturers.  All Hylas sailing and motor yachts now include three-years of VesselVanguard service, providing owners notifications of, and at-a-glance status for, required maintenance, as well as establishing a protocol for Hylas’ technical department to remotely monitor yacht maintenance tasks and offer technical assistance, if necessary. Maritimo Apprentices Take Out Two Top Gongs

Leading Australian luxury motor yacht manufacturer, Maritimo, saw two of its apprentices take out apprentice of the year awards in their respective trade categories at an awards ceremony on the Gold Coast last night.  The Tafe Queensland Gold Coast Apprentice Awards were announced at a special event in Southport.  Fourth Year Apprentice Nathan Creenaune, who finished his time in September, won his category and First Year  Apprentice, Jesse Blackley won his.  Nathan is now qualified as a Certificate 3 Marine Craft (Boat Builder) and Jesse is currently a Certificate 3 Marine Craft Apprentice first year. Maritimo's General Manager Operations Phil Candler said the wins by both Nathan and Jesse were well deserved and a credit to the two apprentices.  he guys have done a great job and it is a credit to them personally and to our overall apprenticeship programme, he said.  Candler said another two apprentices were nominated, Zoe DePryck, a second year Certificate 3 Cabinet Maker and Lachlan Sacco a first year Certificate 3 Marine Craft apprentice. Zoe won the First Year Cabinet Maker Apprentice Of The Year last year.  To have four nominated and then get two wins is a fantastic result, he said. We put a great deal of time and effort into our training and mentoring initiatives and the apprentices have embraced it enthusiastically.  It is fantastic to see them recognized for their work and efforts and even though Zoe and Lachlan did not win this year just being nominate is a feat in itself.  Jesse and Nathan are to be congratulated and especially for Nathan it is a brilliant way for him to cap off finishing his apprenticeship.  Maritimo currently has 12 apprentices doing their trades.  The company employs approximately 300 staff and contractors and ships its luxury motor yachts around the globe.

Maritimo Takes Two out of Three in World Championship

Australian luxury motor yacht manufacturer, Maritimo's international Racing Technologies Division is on a high with its new R30 XCAT performing strongly in Shanghai at the weekend resulting in Maritimo Racing taking out two of the three races in round two of the UIM XCAT World Championship.  The new R30 was only having its second outing after a strong debut in Italy earlier this year.  The new hull and design package benefiting from further testing and development back in Australia, after Maritimo Racing shipped their XCAT and equipment back to Maritimo Racing’s Technology Centre in between rounds one and two for modifications and upgrades.  “The team have worked tirelessly on developing the setup to improve performance since Italy, and we continue to find more pace with what was already a fast package out of the box,” said driver Tom Barry-Cotter.  The new R30 advantages are seen in its handling and balance characteristics with the new design carrying noticeably higher cornering speeds to the rest of the competition in Shanghai. The R30 differs radically in appearance to the rest of the competition when at speed, but we are very comfortable in the cockpit and the boat is proving extremely predictable in its handling characteristics.  Barry-Cotter, who raced the R30 with veteran offshore powerboat campaigner, Ross Willaton, said a fuel pressure issue in the first race of the Shanghai series saw Maritimo drop back from fourth to sixth position in the closing laps with a podium position in sight. The following two days were a different result he said, as the wins in Shanghai close up the championship with just six points separating the top three boats with three races to go in the final round in Dubai in December.  The team now turns its focus to the final Round of three races in Dubai December 12-14 where the UIM XCAT World Championship will be decided.  The team is already back in Australia working on upgrades for the final round, as we know we need yet more pace and more important reliability to bring to the decider; he said.


Nordhavn Naps Scheduled for May 2020

The third annual Nordhavns Across Puget Sound (NAPS) rendezvous will happen May 8-10, 2020 and organizers are anticipating the biggest turnout yet with at least 40 Nordhavns expected to participate. The weekend event is a low key gathering of Nordhavns devoid of formal dinners and organized seminars. Instead, NAPS skews more toward potluck suppers and boat hopping during which owners compare layouts and swap cruising stories with one another. NAPS was the brainchild of Kevin and Allison Jeffries, owners of N55 Red Rover, who love attending Nordhavn company rendezvous and wanted to create a less elaborate version they could bring to the Pacific Northwest that could be managed easily enough by the two of them. This year they spearheaded a new event, the Taco Run, joining a slew of Nordhavn owners on a venture down the west coast to Mexico, where they will spend the winter. This meant they wouldn’t be around to manage NAPS so they handed over the reins to N62 owner, Bill Baker.  Baker had attended NAPS this past spring, where boat participation stood at 19 boats, up from 9 boats the first year. When the Jeffries realized they wouldn’t be able to run NAPS in 2020, they looked to their friend to step in. “There was some arm twisting and margaritas to ease the pain,” joked Baker. “Before I knew it, Kevin had me talked into it. [He knew my wife and I] would be in the northwest for a year or so.” There was no escaping the assignment. Gratefully, Kevin continued to assist as much as he could, and Baker has received a hand from fellow owners Elizabeth and Shawn Krenke and Jill and Don Bernard.  He’s needed the support given the huge interest in the event’s third installment. Baker said that at least 11 different Nordhavn models will be represented, and he speculates the Victoria International Marina, the site of NAPS, will max out with 50 Nordhavns in attendance. “I think we may get that,” said Baker, excited about the prospect of seeing and meeting all the Nordhavn owners, but worries capacity will shut out some, adding “I will feel bad [if] there’s no more room.”

Nordhavn Film Festival Wrap Up

The first annual Nordhavn Film Festival (NFF) was a smashing success and proved Nordhavn owners not only know how to have great adventures, they can produce one heck of an interesting movie! The level of creativity, professionalism and entertainment value put forth by each of the 18 movies submitted was beyond all expectations.  “Suffice it to say, we will be doing this again,” said PAE president Dan Streech.  An independent panel of judges – made up of experts in the boating and entertainment industries – whittled entries down to 10 finalists. From that group, the ultimate winner was crowned: Aurora Saves submitted by Denzil Baynes. For his effort, Baynes took home the $10,000 grand prize and the beautiful Nordy award (the NFF’s version of the Oscar).  Rounding out the Runners Up were Our Nordhavn Life by Shawn and Elizabeth Krenke; Father to Son: A Legacy of Adventure by Adam Paskowitz; and When Dreams Align by Brooke Palmer.  The NFF was conceived as a fun, creative way for Nordhavn owners to “up their game” in the video realm. Movie-making seems to come second nature to most of the Nordhavn community anyway, but how would they respond if pushed just a little bit? To honor the magnitude of the event, the celebration was set against a lavish backdrop that included a red carpet, three-course dinner, and chandelier-adorned tent. Around 200 guests were treated to a first-class showstopper, meant to mimic Hollywood’s top tier awards ceremonies. “We at PAE can’t stress enough that the Nordhavn Film Festival for us was a magical night in which Nordhavns and Nordhavn owners were celebrated in a way that befits the incredible depth of their contributions to the cruising lifestyle,” said PAE Vice President Jim Leishman, who conceived the idea for the NFF. “The time we got to spend with everyone serves as a reminder of why we do what we do.”  The 2nd annual Nordhavn Film Festival will take place in 2021.


Tecnorib New Dealer in Poland

TecnoRib, the official licensee of Pirelli brand inflatable boats, has signed an agreement with Polish company Patrick Marine for the distribution of the range's tenders and speedboats. Both companies express a great satisfaction. Patrick Marine, a company based in Warsaw and already an exclusive dealer of major boat brands such as Frauscher, Vanquish and Sanlorenzo, has been chosen by TecnoRib, the official licensee of Pirelli brand inflatable boats, as the sole distributor for Poland of all the tenders and speedboats produced by the Milan-based shipyard. Among these, the entire Jet Tender range, with models ranging from 2.9 to 4.5 metres in length, and the Pirelli 1250 walk-around designed in partnership with Swedish design studio Mannerfelt Design Team, whose launch is officially scheduled to take place at the 2020 boot Düsseldorf. Patrick Marine is a leading Polish company founded in 2005, which works in partnership with several shipyards, including some Italian companies, and provides many services related not only to the boating industry but also to the world of private jets.  This will add to TecnoRib's growing network of international dealers, confirming its growth and the appreciation of its products by yacht owners all over the world.

Sanlorenzo Win Excellence in Design

Sanlorenzo and Bernardo and Martina Zuccon don't stop: with the SL 102 Asymmetric Project they have won the Excellence in Design award in Lazio, promoted by ADI (the Italian Industrial Design Association). The award ceremony took place on Friday, November 22th, during the presentation and inauguration of the ADI Design Index 2019 Exhibition in Rome.


Viking Achievement Award

In a dramatic black-and-gold-themed night within the amphitheater of Amsterdam's National Maritime Museum, more than 350 guests paid tribute to the Lifetime Achievement of Viking Yachts' Bill and Bob Healey at the IBI-Metstrade Boat Builder Awards this week.  The award honored the Healey brothers' nearly six decades of remarkable service as they built Viking Yachts into the world's largest manufacturer of high-end sportfishing and motor yachts by following their mantra of building a better boat every day. They also made significant and selfless contributions to the general wellbeing of the boating industry. The Lifetime Achievement Award, was presented to Bob's son (above), Robert Healey Jr, Executive Co-Chairman of the Viking Group.  International Boat Industry (IBI) Editor and Chair of the Boat Builder Awards judge, Ed Slack, commented: "The Boat Builder Awards celebrates the achievements of the people and companies that build the boats that drive our industry."

Viking Concerned About New Emissions Rule

A looming emissions mandate could spell doom for large diesel-powered yachts unless an international governing body realizes its premature implementation will only devastate the marine industry, crippling boat building production and causing substantial job losses. "This is the greatest threat to the marine industry since the luxury tax of 1990," Viking President and CEO Pat Healey told the Viking dealer network and the marine media during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last week. "They're mandating impossible regulations that are going to leave us with no other choice but to stop production of our 93 Motor Yacht and our 92 Convertible." The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is prematurely forcing commercial regulation compliance of Tier III emissions limits upon builders of diesel-powered yachts. The mandate, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2021, requires the installation of heavy, bulky and potentially dangerous Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems in the enginerooms of yachts with a "load line length" of 24 meters (78 feet). Last year, the international marine industry attempted to delay the implementation but was unsuccessful, with key member states such as Norway, Germany and Canada voting against the extension. SCR would increase purchase and operating costs of the boat; add significant weight; reduce performance; hinder accessibility for service; compromise safety; and require additional ventilation and onboard tankage. "Viking will not compromise the engineering integrity of our yachts with a technology that would have so many negative effects," says Pat. On the 92 Convertible, the system would need to be installed above the engines and span their entire length and width as shown in these profile (left) and overhead (right) views. The technology to scale down the SCR system to a level where it can be effectively engineered for installation in the Viking 92 and 93 MY "simply does not exist yet," says Lonni Rutt, Viking's Vice President of Design and Engineering. Discontinuing production of Viking's largest vessels will have severe employment implications on the New Gretna, New Jersey, plant. "This is a huge employment issue," says Pat. "This is not just about Viking. This is about the entire marine industry, both here in the U.S. and internationally. We're talking about an entire segment of boatbuilding - yachts from 90 to 130 feet - being wiped out." Viking and other boatbuilders are already in compliance with the U.S. EPA's Tier III requirement. IMO Tier III, which aims to further reduce nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx), is based on commercial shipping where vessels log tens of thousands of hours annually compared to a few hundred for recreational yachts. "We will continue to fight the unfeasible application of IMO Tier III limits," says Pat. "The boating public needs to know that these are farfetched international regulations put in place by people who are disconnected completely from the marine industry and the companies and people who build boats."

Viking Master of the Class

Viking subsidiary Atlantic Marine Electronics has been hands-on with a series of classes conducted by the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA). Four full-day classes were conducted for more than 20 AME technicians and Viking Yacht engineers, certifying the team in NMEA 2000. NMEA 2000 is a plug-and-play communications standard used for connecting marine sensors and display units. "AME is proud to be the largest NMEA Master Dealer," said AME General Manager Todd Tally. "In being a Master Dealer boaters know that the NMEA has certified your commitment to education, technical proficiency and customer service consistent with high standards."

Hargrave present the new G120 signature series revealing in this an ability to build a customized yacht to meet the unique needs of its clients. For this new super yacht Hargrave teamed up with Galati yacht sales, a famous renowned yacht brokerage firm in the USA with twelve offices who worked alongside naval architect Jack Sarin for exterior lines and Shelly Dicondina for the interior.  Many new features stand out in the G120 from the speed and handling, fuel capacity, long range efficiency and exceptional use of interior space. This raised pilothouse super yacht offers a five stateroom layout, including two master suites, day heads in the salon and on the flybridge deck along with beautiful interior appointments. Project: Bavaria SR41

The Bavaria SR41 kicks off a new line of motorboats from the German boat builder. It combines the best of the sporty S-line and R-line from Bavaria. A comfortable cockpit, a large sunbed which can be transformed in no time into a lounge area with a table right on the waterfront and a large bathing platform. This makes the Bavaria SR41 the ideal sport cruiser for a perfect day on the water with family and friends. Bavaria also the SR41 a new dimension with an intelligent cabin layout.  The spacious midships located full beam owner’s cabin has its own bathroom, as does the guest cabin in the bow. Comfort and boating pleasure are the focuses of the new SR41, which is available as a soft top, hard top and coupe version.  The Bavaria SR41 will be powered by twin Mercruiser 355hp gas petrol engines, and to twin Volvo 380hp.  Propulsion will be stern drive with dual propeller.

Paul Fiore 1943 - 2019

Paul Fiore, the founder of Hustler Powerboats in New York, which kicked off the stepped V-bottom hull revolution that swept through the high-performance marine industry in the 1980s, died the morning 26th November after a four-week battle with an undisclosed illness. He was 76 years old. Fiore was the father of Outerlimits Offshore Powerboats founder Mike Fiore, who died following an accident in the 2014 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri.  Though Fiore often described himself as retired from the boat building world, he regularly consulted with the Outerlimits crews.  Fiore is survived by his wife, Diane, and daughter, Donna, who works at Outerlimits; his former wife; Joyce, the mother of Mike and Donna; and grandchildren Nicole, Sophia, Jet and Moxie.

New Model: Princess S66

Princess present the new S66, a model which replaces the S65 presented in 2016.  The new S66 has an undeniable presence, thanks to her slender streamlined lines and aggressive forms. A Vee shaped hull delivers on this promise with speeds up to 38 knots coming from twin Man 1400hp engines. When at anchor, peacefulness descends onto her generously appointed deck areas, which include a spacious fore-deck seating area, whilst her hydraulic bathing platform and three meters plus space tender garage become the perfect base for water-sports.  Captivating on the outside, she is distinctively cool inside. Her sociable galley aft arrangement, with opposing open-plan dining area, has sliding doors and a fully opening electric window leading out to the cockpit to create an al fresco bar. Below deck eight guests are accommodated across four cabins, three of which are en suite.  A single berth crew cabin is located aft.

Project: Anvera 42

Anvera is a rib cruiser and yacht builder which has gained a lot of attention on its first two models, first the 55 and then the 48.  Now Anvera presents the project for a third entry level 42 rib cruiser project.  We do not have a lot of details about this new Anvera, so far we know that the 42 is designed as the larger sisters by Aldo Drudi, and follows a light weight construction mostly made of carbon fiber, which allows high speeds with minimum horsepower.  This one is a recurring Anvera theme, which makes for incredible nautical mile per liter numbers, and an amazing ride its priority.

Super Yacht Fire in Puerto Banus

A thirty meter super yacht titled Mama Lola had an onboard fire while berthed at Puerto Banus, Marbella, on the South-East Mediterranean coast of Spain at about 10:15 morning time of 25 November.  The fire was reported to have started in the cabin area of the yacht, with a thick grey-black plum of smoke rising up from the yacht.  Fire fighters and emergency services rushed to the scene, with the fire controlled in about two hours.  In a footage on YouTube a nearby yacht was seen leaving its berth to port-side of the smoke filled yacht for safety reasons.  The yacht was saved from the fire, although the damage inside, should not be little.
Motor yacht Mama Lola is a Stefano Righini designed 2002 Falcon Yachts 100, powered by twin MTU 1800hp for speeds up to 26 knots and an interior with five guest suites.  Debuting in 1996 the Falcon 100 is an evolution and replacement of the 92 model, and was the Viareggio builder flagship at launch.  Produced for nine years in 25 units, the 100 was replaced by the Falcon 102 in 2005.

New Model: Fairline F//Line 33

In recent years each new Fairline model seems to bring a divided opinion by the brand fans, and the new F//Line 33 fell deeply in this category, and took it to the next level for the reasoning it has been a long time if ever, that the British boat builder offered something like it.  I have been following Fairline for various decades now and the last sport model I remember was the 26 Sportfury in the mid to late eighties, which shared hull with the Sunfury but had no second midships cabin and outside looks which teased Sunseeker.  Divided opinions about the F//Line 33 are from claims it is a gift to boating to those saying that Fairline does not know what an entry level cruiser is, and reminding to everyone what the previous models and successes in the past of the British brand as the Targa 34 and 38 offered in a similar size.  The Fairline F//Line 33 more then a look in itself is a reply to Princess R35, costing less but still offering some things of its own.  Looking outside the F//Line 33 looks less sophisticated, but looking deeper it does bring a sophistication of her own thanks to the ingenuity and style of Italian designer Alberto Mancini.  Inside the F//Line 33 also offers more to the R35 thanks to a two plus two layout with a V-berth dinette converting to a double berth forward, and a midships cabin sleeping two, with a shower head in between.  The F//Line 33 also features a nice deep Vee shape which according to first reviews handles really well in choppy seas.  The big disappointment of the F//Line 33 seems to be the CE C category which considering the F//Line 33 has a range of 200 nautical miles at cruise is really disappointing, and from here I hope Fairline rectifies it to a CE B today before tomorrow.

Project: Ferretti Custom Line Navetta 30

During the fall boat shows of 2019 Ferretti Group unveiled the project for a new Custom Line Navetta 30 model, set to launch in mid 2020.  After designing two Ferretti Yachts models, the 670 and 720 the new Navetta 30 will be the first Custom Line to feature design from Filippo Salvetti, who presents a semi displacement three deck super yacht with distinctive features of modern style, with a classic conservative line.  Short of 29 meters of over-all a positive feature will be its waterline of less to 24 meters, which will allow for the Navetta 30 to be captained by a standard yacht masters licence in many legislations. The Ferretti Custom Line Navetta 30 will feature a five double cabins interior with owners stateroom on the main deck forward, while crew accommodation is for six in three cabins.  The Custom Line Navetta 30 is to be powered by twin Man 800hp engines which will allow for a max speed up to fourteen knots and a cruise of 13 knots.
