Super Yacht Trouble in North Liguria Sea

A 25 meter super yacht departing from Aregai Marina on fourth November had to make an emergency stop in San Remo at around 1100 hours, just after five nautical miles into its journey due to hull damage under way resulting in water entering inside and a risk of sinking.  The super yacht made an emergency mooring in San Remo yacht marina and was immediately provided with assistance from the local Fire Fighting Squad.  The operation resulted even more difficult with the area having an orange to yellow alarm for waves, and wind forecast reported to go over fifty knots in the morning in the Ligurian sea area from Ventimiglia down to La Spezia.  At around 1300 hours the 25 meter super yacht was reported safe, while a second pump was being called.  At 1400 hours after a hull inspection, the super yacht was found having two holes in the bottom, so it will be impossible for it to navigate to any repair facility, with a huge crane being called to lift up for a temporary fix and then taking her to a specialist yacht yard for repairs.
Motor Yacht Beatris involved in this accident is a Cantieri Navali Lavagna Admiral 27 legno.  The Admiral 27 legno for wood construction, was produced from late seventies till mid eighties, and came from a design of Poalo Caliari. The Lavagna Admiral 27 legno offered interior of five or four double cabins, with two crew cabins sleeping four.  The Lavagna Admiral 27 legno was usually powered by twin MTU engines for speeds up to 25 knots and a cruise of about twenty knots.  It is not clear how many Admiral 27 legno Cantieri Navali Lavagna build, but I do know that two other sister vessels do exist. The Admiral 27 was replaced by the 26 L.L in mid eighties.

New Model: Spirit P70

Spirit Yachts has launched its largest modern classic motor yacht, the Spirit P70, outside its waterside yard in Ipswich, Suffolk. The P70 was designed by Spirit Yachts for an experienced motor yacht customer who requested an owner-driven yacht capable of cruising one thousand nautical miles at an average of 18 knots across the North Sea without having to refuel. As with all Spirit yachts, the P70 has been completely customized to suit the owner’s itinerary and criteria. Constructed using Sapele ring frames to which Douglas fir longitudinal strips were bonded, the P70 build followed the same core processes of Spirit’s sailing yacht hulls. Once the initial structure was complete, diagonal layers of kaya wood planking were laid down, sanded and vacuum infused with a thin layer of epoxy resin. This lightweight method of construction means that at 24 tonnes the P70 is almost half the weight of a similar size fiberglass counterpart. Twin Man 800hp engines will generate a cruising speed of 18 knots and a maximum of 25 knots.  Layout the P70 offers a flybridge with two double Stidd helm seats and additional seating for six guests. The wheelhouse sits midships on the main deck and has double and single Stidd seats located in front of the navigational equipment and engine controls. An additional raised sofa is to port, with a chart table and stowage to starboard. A few steps down and forward of the wheelhouse is the main saloon, complete with a ‘rise and fall’ TV, a bar and panoramic views from the forward windows.  The lower deck houses the accommodation and living area. Stairs from the main saloon lead down to a forward ensuite owner’s cabin, complete with a bath, and an ensuite single cabin, which doubles up as an office.  A separate stair case down from the wheelhouse provides access to a single day head and the open plan dining saloon and galley. The saloon dining table has a U-shaped port side sofa, with additional seating to starboard, wine storage and a TV. The well-equipped galley includes an American style fridge-freezer with built in ice-maker, below floor chest fridge, dishwasher, twin sinks, four burner induction hob, a fan oven and a microwave. Aft of the dining area are two twin guest cabins, which share a head and shower.

Project: Ocea Nautilus 45

French super yacht builder Ocea present the project for the Nautilus 45 designed by Philippe Briand.  To be build in alloy Nautilus 45 is a super yacht that embodies an adventure lifestyle, satisfying a desire to explore landscapes first-hand. The Nautilus 45 offers a six double guest cabins interior, from a full-width master suite on the main deck and five large guest cabins. Efficiency is achieved through the use of Ocea's favorite material, aluminium, which makes it possible to design a lighter, more economical, faster yacht that can go further without refuelling. The size of the tenders also plays a role in going further. With the Nautilus 45, the idea was to design a yacht that can go into areas where there is no port or dock. The large tenders offer a way to explore bays and coastlines where the yacht cannot venture, and this is achieved with space for two eight meter long tenders, stowed on the main deck, offering guests optimal comfort for a wide range of exciting day adventures. In the same spirit, an exclusive boarding system, called easy-boarding, was developed to facilitate access to the tenders. Easy-boarding provides the convenience and safety of a real dock, even near the most inhospitable shores.  No power details are so far given but the Nautilus 45 can reach speeds up to sixteen knots, and cruise at twelve, this giving a range of four thousand nautical miles.

Sophisticated Marketing

The new Azimut S10 product video, created some negative comments on social media.  The video of one minute 33 seconds long, sees a girl doing naked art dancing and in between we see short shots of the super sport yacht, and then ending with it launching in speed nicely.  This is not the first time that video criticism has arrived, and with Youtube it is very easy to do it.  In the past I do remember a video for a new Princess yacht which looked like a short novel, having a similar negative critique.
The Youtube platform has expanded the possibilities of boat builders to promote product endlessly for free.  Now in recent years we have entered a stage of sophistication marketing from the popular famous brands who are doing videos which match in quality and style those of high end cars.
But do boaters really want this?
The comments following the Azimut S10 and other similar videos is always that the viewers want to see more of the boat and learn about it, then an actual marketing ploy.  Sometimes it seems that marketers do not realize that social media is different to TV, as these launch model videos, do actually look like to be created for the old medium.
It is to understand, that YouTube and the new modern social media medium is different.  Look at channels as Aquaholic, SuperYachtCaptain, BoatTube, MBY, NonSoloMare on the less sophisticated front, TheBoatShow and BoatTest on the sophistication side of things and others that I have forgot.  What one notices especially in the first group above is that they have basic filming done with a GoPro or two and similar set up.  But they do bring the viewers what they want to see and have a huge success. Viewers of Youtube and similar social media videos want content not a one minute impact video suited for a premium time television advert!  The numbers actually support a basic filming and a natural approach, and some of the above do have views in the thousand just after a day or two.
To be fair I think Azimut knows about this, and did make walk through videos of its models.  Result the walk through video of the Azimut 60 has 150000 views, while the product only 11000.  Interesting numbers!  But can really a popular famous brand do without a sophisticated new model launch video.  Probably not, but toning it down a little, and showing more of the boat in navigation, something an owner rarely sees, and its features want do any harm.

Bavaria on Direct Course to New Financial Year

Business is running well at Bavaria Yachts, as summarized by the new management in Giebelstadt. All the planned restructuring milestones were met within a year. And upcoming projects, such as two new models for 2020, are also already planned. Michael Müller (CEO) and Dr. Ralph Kudla (CRO/CFO) have now strengthened their team with Jens Abromeit as the new COO.  Bavaria Yachts has begun the new production season with full order books. “The autumn trade fairs in the Netherlands, England, France, Italy, Norway and Germany began extremely well for us. Thanks to our new working hours model, which allows us to produce more boats in our winter peak season and deplete accumulated overtime hours in the summertime, we were able to optimize production and shorten delivery times. Furthermore, our restructuring measures in the shipyard are also taking effect. This results in a better handle on costs and quicker delivery of new boats,” reports Michael Müller, who has been the CEO of Bavaria Yachts since February 2019.  The management team has been reinforced by Jens Abromeit as COO. The experienced graduate engineer will support Michael Müller and Dr. Ralph Kudla as a director. “Jens Abromeit has a wealth of know-how in series production. We are thrilled to have him on board,” explains Michael Müller.  The existing product range has been reworked for the new financial year. The Cruiser line sailing yachts start the new season with a new design, while the S-line motorboats attract customers with an attractive Style package and a saving of 20 per cent on options included in the package. Likewise, the new sailing yachts Bavaria C45, C50 and C57 conquered important market segments in 2019. A new C-line sailing yacht and a new motorboat are already at the prototype construction stage.

Bertram Expands Into Outboard Sportfish Products

Iconic American boat builder Bertram Yachts is delighted to announce today that the company is planning to expand its range of offshore fishing boats to include a comprehensive lineup of outboard powered products.  Mark Paulhus, Bertram CEO, stated that “With the support of Bertram’s parent company, the Gavio Group, who also owns Italian super yacht builders Baglietto and CCN, Bertram plans to spend in excess of $15,000,000 on new product development over the next four years to expand our portfolio of products into premium outboard powered boats starting in the high 20 foot range”. Bertram has also indicated that the company will continue to invest in expanding production capacity at the company’s Tampa Florida facility over the next two years to support the expected increases in volume.  The company is currently wrapping up construction of the first 50’ sport express model which will debut at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2020 and will start introduction of the new outboard powered products at Ft. Bertram’s inboard diesel powered 35’ bridge and 61’ convertible models have done particularly well in international markets with products delivered to Europe, Asia, Central America and the Caribbean over the last year. Thompson further stated that “There is also a strong international and domestic interest in Bertram’s new 50’ open and sport express inboard diesel models and the company has already started taking orders for these products”.  Bertram has indicated that they are in the process of signing an exclusive outboard engine supply agreement with Mercury Marine. According to Paulhus, “Our partnership with Mercury will allow us to achieve the level of boat, engine and systems integration excellence necessary to ensure that the new Bertram models deliver the product performance and reliability that the company has long been known for”. Bertram Yachts continues to be an innovative manufacturer, inspired by tradition but always pushing to be a little bolder and drive a little further. The company believes that the no-compromises approach to boat/engine integration, along with premium construction materials and manufacturing techniques, will deliver a class-leading boat to the market. Randy Caruana, Mercury Marine Vice President of Sales said "We are excited to work closely with Bertram as they develop their new outboard-powered offering. Bertram's designs combine both modern luxury and sophistication making this an ideal partnership for both companies."

Feadship Celebrates Seventy Years With Jewels in the Crown

After making its shimmering debut in Monaco, the phenomenal composition in glass known as The Jewels in the Crown is now making its way across the Atlantic to be presented at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. Feadship’s majestic tribute to the boundless imagination of its clients features well over 300 of the 450-plus Feadships launched over the past seventy years since the brand was launched in 1949.  Like precious gems, no two Feadships are the same and each is a work of art. This industry-defining fact was the inspiration behind the glittering The Jewels in the Crown presentation, a pure custom creation made to mark the 70th anniversary of Feadship’s foundation.  The product of many months of design and development, the display comprises hundreds of individually pressed pieces of circular glass, each containing a Feadship profile that was screen-printed on the glass by hand. A kaleidoscope of colours and gradations reflects the changing hues of the water as seen from a moving yacht, while the different sizes represent the various dimensions of Feadships.  Visitors to the Monaco show were stopped in their tracks by the spectacular first impression made by the overall piece, then paused to find their favourite Feadship among the featured fleet. ‘Spectacular’ and ‘breathtaking’ were just two of the superlatives regularly overheard by those manning the Feadship stand. In addition, a number of owners were presented with their very own ‘jewel’ in Monaco, custom-made to feature their Feadship.

Feadship Journey in History

Feadship is delighted to share a brand-new film that captures the journey of Feadship and its clients over the ages. As well as featuring previously unseen archive footage, the movie goes behind-the-scenes at the Feadship yards and takes you on board various awesome Feadships in a unique way.  The movie covers the excitement of the earliest days of Feadship after its formation in 1949. It shows how a signature Feadship style and way of working developed over the years, and how the concept of pure custom creation transformed the superyacht world forever.  Discover how owning a Feadship became a badge of honor among those who appreciate the very best things in life and why so many clients say that building a Feadship is every bit as inspiring as sailing on the finished result.

Ferretti Custom Line Receives Prize in America

Custom Line 120’, the first to be signed by Francesco Paszkowski Design, confirms its place as a masterpiece of Yacht Design also in America, winning a new recognition at the International Superyacht Society Design and Leadership Awards.  The Design and Leadership Awards, now in their 29th edition, are organized every year by the International Superyacht Society. The awards are assigned by the major players in global yachting to entrepreneurs, designers and builders who make the greatest contribution to elevating the sector’s standards.  At the gala dinner, which was held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Custom Line 120’ “Vista Blue” received the prize for “Best Power Yacht” in the 24 to 40 metre category thanks to its score in seaworthiness, comfort, safety and customization, which have always been in the DNA of Custom Line.  Built in cooperation with the Product Strategy Committee chaired by engineer Piero Ferrari and Ferretti Group’s Engineering Department, it is the first Custom Line to be signed by Francesco Paszkowski Design. The project proposes an aesthetic canon inspired by utmost formal elegance in which the external design dovetails into the interior decoration. The profile is sleek and powerful: taut lines run from the stern to the forward area, generating a spectacular alternation of materials and colours in the light structural surfaces and dark tinted windows.  Stefano de Vivo, Chief Commercial Officer of Ferretti Group, commented: “This award is a powerful symbol of the recognisability of the brand also in the American market. If there is a yacht that deserves this recognition, it is the Custom Line 120’, which for us represents having met a real challenge. In fact, during the design phase, we deliberately chose to focus on innovation and design, by partnering with the Francesco Paszkowski firm for the first time, re-elaborating the style and elements of automotive design and residential architecture. Special recognition goes to the enthusiasm and competence of the whole Custom Line team and workers, without whom we would never have achieved such fantastic results.”  Testifying to the popularity of the Ferretti Group yachts, Custom Line was among the finalists also with the Navetta 42 Four Flowers III in the “Best Power Yacht” 40 to 65 metre category; while the Riva 110’ Dolcevita was nominated in the category “Best Power Yacht” from 24 to 40 metres.

Ferretti Group New Orders Totaling More then 465 Million Euros

At the conclusion of the European season of boat shows and summer events, the Ferretti Group announces that it has collected new orders totaling more than €465 million, in the first 9 months of 2019 (+ 18% vs. first 9 months of 2018). Among these, the Ferretti Security Division collected new orders for marine security and patrol vessels equal to about €20 million.  These positive results have benefited from the launch of five new models under the Riva, Pershing, Ferretti Yachts and Custom Line brands, as well as from the relaunch of the Wally brand, which Ferretti Group acquired in April this year. In particular, our first serial model under the Wally brand, the 48 Wallytender, that was launched during the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2019, has already registered orders for seven units and ther Ferretti security Division (FSD) was recently awarded a contract to supply 16 coastal patrol boats to the Arma dei Carabinieri.  The Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Alberto Galassi, commented on the results as follows: “I am very proud of the results achieved; these numbers seems to confirm our strategy of continuous renewal of our product range, our purchase and development of an exceptional brand such as Wally, and our expansion in the synergistic and a-cyclical FSD business, which is now beginning to see significant results after its start-up phase”.

The Hatteras and Cabo factory in New Bern, N.C., quickly resumed operation after the September storm that regrettably caused flooding in much of the area, and none of the boats under construction suffered any damage thanks to the staff's thorough preparations.

Hatteras at Sixty

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the iconic Hatteras Yachts brand, which pioneered the use of fiberglass for recreational boats over 40 feet.  Until the Post-World War II era, most small recreational boats were made of wood. Then, in the 1950s, a few manufacturers of sail and powerboats began to experiment with building them out of woven, fiberglass-reinforced plastic (commonly known today as “fiberglass”), which had been developed by the Owens Corning Company in 1932. However, many marine industry leaders remained highly skeptical about using the material for boat building. “If God had wanted us to build fiberglass boats, He would have made fiberglass trees,” was the saying commonly heard around the docks in those days.

Nominated in the category Power 24-40m, the Moonen team will be present at the awards ceremony in Fort Lauderdale on 30 October 2019.  Delivered to her owners in 2018, Brigadoon is the first hull in the Moonen Martinique line and features exterior design and naval architecture by Réne Van Der Velden and Diana Yacht Design. She is nominated in the category of Best Power Yacht 24-40 metres, a true testament to Moonen’s commitment to building Dutch-quality, oceangoing motor yachts.  The 36-metre motor yacht Brigadoon is the first yacht built on the semi-custom Martinique platform. Both the Italian studio of Nauta Design and the London-based design team of Studio Indigo are responsible for her interior design of Brigadoon. The Moonen Martinique is one of four of Moonen’s superyacht platforms centered on spacious lay-out, proven performance, excellent sea-keeping and the freedom of customization.  The ISS Awards 2019 nomination follows Brigadoon’s previous win earlier this year at the World Superyacht Awards, taking the title of Best Semi-Displacement Yacht in the 33-39.9-metre category. Talking of the continued recognition of Brigadoon in the superyacht industry, CEO of Moonen Yachts, Johan Dubbelman, says: “The nomination of Brigadoon for best yacht in her size class in the ISS Awards is an honour for the whole Moonen team. Brigadoon is a fantastic example of the exceptional craftsmanship of Moonen Yachts, and our determination to keep pushing our brand to new heights. We look forward to attending the awards ceremony in Florida, and are excited to showcase the future of Moonen.”

Tecnorib Arrives in Oceania

The international expansion of TecnoRib, the official licensee of Pirelli brand inflatable boats, continues with the signing of an agreement for the official distribution of its ribs and jet tenders in Australia with Barbagallo Marine, the consolidated Australian dealer for important yacht brands. “Operating on an increasingly global market requires a broad-based presence in multiple geographical areas”, said TecnoRib Managing Director Gianni De Bonis, the day after the signing of the partnership agreement covering distribution in Australia with Barbagallo Marine. The agreement represents a new step forward in TecnoRib’s increasingly wide-ranging, carefully defined and articulated internationalisation strategy, following on from partnerships recently set up in Europe (Spain, UK and Montenegro), Asia (Thailand) and Central America (Santo Domingo, Haiti and Puerto Rico). Barbagallo Marine is part of Barbagallo Group, a leading luxury car dealer on the Australian market. Established in 1967, it became a benchmark for customers of the world’s top car brands, including Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini and Aston Martin. Leveraging the extraordinary success of the luxury sector, the company went on to create a diversified portfolio and in 1997 set up Barbagallo Marine, which represents Sunseeker on the Australian and New Zealand markets and, since 2019, Sanlorenzo yachts. Barbagallo Marine will handle the distribution of the entire TecnoRib range and an outboard version of the new Pirelli 1250, with a deck layout specially designed for the Australian market, without aft sunbeds. The new model will be availble in outboard and inboard-outboard versions.

Viking Forty Year Club

Forty years ago Faye Pharo handed Al Uhl an application to be a carpenter during Viking's pivotal years. Al's reputation gained traction and soon he was installing interior furniture, galley components and headliners. During a downturn in the economy, Al feared for his job but instead was transferred to the R&D Department learning from Viking Pioneer, Bobby Walker. As the pace at Viking gained momentum, Al expanded his role. "I benefitted from constant mentoring from Bill Healey, Bruce Wilson, Rudy Dalinger and Bobby," says Al, now the Vice President of Manufacturing.  "There is a mindset around here that I picked up early. Bill Healey has always been about making things better. He's a problem solver. He said he didn't need to know everything but only how to get something done. To be part of this can-do attitude is how we make a better boat every day. It's the attitude I want in all the people I work with. Knowing that Bill had faith in me is why I see myself doing this for a long time to come."

Viking Be a Hero

Team Matt Uhl didn't let a little rain dampen their spirits at the 9th Annual Hero Walk and 5K Run in Ocean City, New Jersey. Matt, a Rowan University student was heart breakingly killed in 2013 after being hit by a drunk driver. His 32-strong support team proudly participated in the John R. Elliot Hero Campaign's event for designated drivers to prevent drunk driving tragedies. They raised almost $15,000, and for the 7th year in a row claimed the title of Top Fundraising Team. Honorary Marshalls of this year's walk were Matt's dad Al Uhl, Viking's Vice President of Manufacturing, along with Viking's President and CEO Pat Healey and wife Leanne.

Project: Maritimo M72 One

Maritimo One is the new custom program which involves three models M51, M72 and M78 of the down under Australian yacht builder.  In the M72 Sport Flybridge Motoryacht is the culmination of ideas from the Maritimo design department and a New Zealand based three-time client, who’s needs required a vessel capable of battling oceans in New Zealand’s North, in pursuit of prize fish.  The degree of customization Maritimo One has provided this customer incorporates over two hundred non-standard options with modifications to the hull’s running surface, transom, tank capacities and engineering, requiring fully customized weight studies and hydrostatic reports. These hull modifications have formed a craft ideal for backing up on fish in testing conditions, whilst still embracing Maritimo’s tried and tested hull and engineering design and expertise.  Modifications to the vessel did not stop at water level, as the extended water line incorporated a fully custom sport cockpit with live wells, bait tanks, mezzanine cockpit configuration, and other specialized fishing options.  Above deck in the flybridge, a modified hardtop has enhanced window openings and rear sight lines with a further customised helm pod and seating to the flybridge aft deck. The Maritimo M72 will feature a three double cabins lower deck with full beam midships master cabin.

Rizzardi New Web Site

Rizzardi presents its new web site.  Founded by Gianfranco Rizzardi in 1974 it started first as a boat support service structure in the central and South Tyrennian sea.  Still keeping its important service structures, Rizzardi eventually moved into construction in 1978 launching its first model the Rizzardi 40 in that year, with a range that expanded to include the 50 and 45 CR in both open Day and Fly flybridge models by the end of the eighties.  In 1993 Rizzardi was the first to start making group in Italy when he took over the then financially stuck Posillipo.  A legendary brand, Posillipo was founded in 1942, with its glorious legendary wooden story starting with the sport boat runabout models, moving to the fiberglass 42 Martinica and 47 Tobago flybridge cruisers, and then to the Technema series as designed by Zuccon which debuted in 1978 and put motor yachting into the future.  An important note is that the Rizzardi and Posillipo connection did exist before the yard became one in 1993, as even the hull shapes of the first Rizzardi models evolved from previous Posillipo Martinica and Tobago models.  Rizzardi currently features two brands; Posillipo and Rizzardi open; with the new web site currently focusing on two models from the Rizzardi line the 48 IN, and the new InSix.  Rizzardi new web site takes you around with the following buttons; InSix, 48 In, Made in Italy, Tradition, Custom Made, and Quality.
