Substance Versus Looks

The title of my monthly blogger is not about a recent boat show visit, but more about the web sites of some of the major boat and yacht builders. Having made the previous 1998 till 2008 in growth, the website of some boat builders do in fact look impressive, and extraordinary with some of them even out classing those of much bigger industries as is the car or fashion related brands industry.
So what's wrong with this one might tell me, being a luxury industry a yacht brand web showroom has to look and impress. The problem is that in recent times these websites do not see a lot of updates, and the more flashy they look the less it happens. Sometimes a new model photos, or project rendering do really take a lot to come by. We can say you are even lucky if they ever do. The reason here is cost cutting, as a flashy high profile website is also very expensive to run and maintain. Surely not informing of what's happening about your company and brand in this time and moment is not good, as being not active can mean to some buyers that things are not running well at the moment, or that you are in big trouble. Today having a well updated website does mean as much as attending to a major boat show.
A lesson to learn here is given by some US boat builders who actually have a blog to keep its customers, and brand followers on the loop of whats happening in the company. One such blog is that of Back Cove which is always updated and really follows whats happening inside the yard. You have posts from a weekly or monthly basis which shows the yard and new model renderings, and updates shown and discussed online. Without having a Back Cove by visiting there Blog you feel part of there family, which is always a good feeling if you are interested to purchase in a brand.
So if you are a boat builder I actually suggest to reduce the costly flashy stuff at the moment, and show to customers how a boat is build from project renderings to actual building stages and improvements. I think communicating that building a boat is totally different then producing a car would be important in the future to move forward for the yachting industry, showing the more natural man work process of construction that a yacht has, being it a ten or thirty meter plus super yacht.

Paolo Casani will take over many of the activities carried out up to now by Gianni Cucco, a manager with ten years' experience at the top of the Company, recently called back by the Chairman Paolo Vitelli to temporarily direct Azimut Yachts and help to select his successor among the company's internal resources. Having successfully completed this mission, and following a rationale of continuity, Gianni Cucco will remain with the Company to support the Azimut division and will continue to carry out some Corporate activities. At the same time the Group, in line with its production and commercial philosophy, has decided to split its activities into two main areas: boats up to 30 metres, headed by Paolo Casani, including Atlantis division headed by Luca Sburlati, and boats over 30 metres, which will be directed by Vincenzo Poerio, a historic company manager who has worked for eighteen years as CEO of Benetti, and will from now on also be responsible for the Grande Collection models branded Azimut Yachts.

Sanlorenzo Improve Ranking

The American magazine Showboats International published the annual world builders superyacht classification (yachts over 80 feet, 24 meters), called Global Order Book, based on the planned number of orders and constructions for every shipyard and the summed lengths of the yachts. Sanlorenzo improves his ranking to the 3rd place, behind Ferretti Group (with his 5 brands, Ferretti Yachts, Custom Line, Crn, Pershing, Riva) and Azimut-Benetti group (with his 2 brands Azimut Yachts and Benetti). It is important to notice, beside the positioning, that Sanlorenzo elencated in 2010 classification 38 hulls for a total length of 4.085 feet, while in 2011 maintain the same level of orders with 37 units and a total length of 3.898 feet. Sanlorenzo keeps maintaining the same level of orders for all its fleet. Very different is the scenario of the first and the second. In 2010 the first was the Azimut-Benetti group with 112 hulls for a total length of 13.063 feet and Ferretti Group was second with 109 hulls for 11.332 feet. In 2011 Ferretti Group orders, even though leader, fell down to 76 hulls for 7.877 feet, while Azimut-Benetti dropped to second place with 67 orders for 7.828 feet. Both cases dropped over the 30%. Even Sunseeker, that from the third place of the last year drops to fifth in 2011, from 52 orders for 4.912 feet to 31 orders for 3.248 feet, with a decrease of around 40%. As far as the other competitors are concerned, Rizzardi and Couach disappear. With so much surprise enters in the classification the new-born Overmarine Baglietto Pisa group that declares 25 hulls. It seems instead that the number of hulls for all the three brands is lower. The market will really face in the next months the real evolution of this situation. The important nothern shipyards keep their positions, as Lürssen with 9 hulls for 2.536 feet, instead of 9 hulls for 2.614 feet of the last year, Feadship with 12 hulls for 2.536 feet compared to 13 hulls for 2.523 feet of 2010, and the Italian Perini Navi with 9 hulls for 1.555 feet instead of 11 hulls for 1.816 feet of last year. Sanlorenzo proves itself as one of the most stable and strengthened operator in the superyacht field and can praise and extraordinary performance for the 2011 too. Sanlorenzo can be considered, as production solidity and for the high level of customization even for medium size yachts, comparable to the biggest and most famous shipyards of the northern Europe that builds giant superyachts and bucks for being, in the world scenario, the referential south Europe shipyard for quality, customization, market stability and reliability.

New Model: Dellapasqua DC18 Elite

Dellapasqua continues to upgrade its sport models line up with the introduction of the biggest DC18 Elite, presented in the last 2010 Genoa show. The new DC18 is the sixth Elite of the range, in the Dellapasqua model line up of fifteen models. Here Dellapasqua continue in its traditional modern cross over looks especially to what concerns the hull lines, but as is custom in the Elite range a look to the future comes from the upper structure. Comfort is also synonymous with the Dellapasqua and the bigger sized Elite models, with the 18 offering a comfortably spacious four double cabin interior, with three heads. More impressive in this arrangement is if you consider that the owners stateroom is a full beam affair, and no guest cabin is a bunk. For sleeping this is surely one of the most comfortable lower decks in this size of just two centimeters less to eighteen meters. A split level saloon, with three sofas, and a galley located behind the helm completes the very well planned living interior, which shows the genuinely of this new model from a family owned and run builder. Power to the traditional Hunt inspired deep Vee hull is twin engines of 1050hp each, with traditional line shafts as propulsion.

Owners who enjoy cruising with larger groups, or those with an eye on the charter market, can opt for the five cabin layout, with two double guest suites in place of the palatial midships VIP, as is the arrangement on hull number one. The 32M heralds the dawn of a new era for Princess Yachts, who continues its pursuit of larger sizes. Approval has now been gained to transform the company’s South Yard and create an industry leading manufacturing facility for a range of larger yachts, what is the the new M range of one hundred plus feet super yachts. The 32M is the current flagship of Princess although not for long as 2012 will see the arrival of the 40M, a 130 foot triple deck vessel with construction starting at the beginning of this year.

Arno Leopard New Web Site

Arno Leopard updates its website to a new platform. Arno Leopard starts in 1973 but the story starts in 1907 when Giuseppe Picchiotti and Sons is founded on the limits of the Arno River.  Picchiotti is according to historical data a family which is part of Italy and Tuscany's naval history since the sixteenth century when Grand Duke Cosimo I dei Medici develops the Navicelli canals in order to make transport of goods to Pisa and Livorno easier and faster, with a 1575 document showing Picchiotti as a shipwright on the Arno river.  Apart Arno Leopard, Picchiotti is an important name in the Italian yachting scene after World War Two, from the actual Picchiotti of Viareggio, to 1972 founded Tecnomarine of Filippo, and the eighties Bluemarine from Paolo.  In 1935 Raffaello, Alessandro, Lorenzo and Nello, the sons of Giuseppe Picchiotti rename the yard to Cantieri Navali Arno.  Up till the sixties Cantieri Navali Arno will help and be part of the Picchiotti family boat building linage helping out in the various internal and international governments commissioned builds. During World War Two Cantieri Arno suffers the total destruction of the yard, burned down to the ground by the German army.  Following the war and with help from the US Government Cantieri Navali Arno is rebuild.  In the sixties Cantieri Arno is part of the Picchiotti from Viareggio, helping in the building of some of the successful semi-production wood cruisers and yachts models which debuts in 1955 with the Versilia and will end twelve models later and the 68 in 1975.  Arno will become a separate entity from Picchiotti in 1973 when it presents its first Leopard 15mt model as designed by Paolo Caliari, which coincides with the shipyard signing an exclusive sales agreement with Gerard Rodriguez.  Paolo Caliari will go to design all the Leopard models till his retirement; totalling elven models and finishing with the 26 MY model which launched in 2000.  In 1984 Arno Leopard launches its first fiberglass yacht, the Sport 19, with the prototype of this model build in aluminium.  The Leopard Sport 19 along with it's evolutions the Sport 20 and Sport 21.50, will prove very important for Arno, also because when launched the 20 was the largest sport yacht ever produced. The new millennium sees the production yard move to a bigger nine covered sheds establishment, with easier sea connection for the bigger yachts, and Andrea Bacigalupo a Caliari pupil taking the task of continuing the family feeling in the Leopard designs from 2004. In 2008 after 28 years of cooperation, Arno cancels the exclusive sales agreement with South of France based Rodriguez Group.  Arno Leopard current range features two lines Composite and Steel, and starts from the 32 M up to the still in project 56 M. Its latest model is the 2010 launched 43 M. The new Arno website is available in Italian and English language and takes you around with the following buttons; Company, Shipyard, Yachts Range, Service, Preowned, Charter Club, and and Contacts.
