Ocean Yachts from the United States of America presents its new World wide web showroom. It's been a long time coming for Ocean Yachts to update its web showroom and this comes with the launch of the much awaited first Makaira model.  Ocean Yachts was launched in 1977, and its success formula was to create sportfish cruisers and yachts which further enhanced interior accommodation and luxury as designed by David Martin.  Today Ocean Yachts built a total of nine models from 37 to 73 feet separated into four different lines; Billfish, Express, Super Sport, and Makaira. It's latest new model is the 64 Makaira launched in the second half of 2014. Ocean Yachts new website takes you around with the following buttons; Home, About Us, Models, Service, Locate A Dealer, News, and Contact Us. New Model: Ocean Yachts 64 Makaira

Its been a long time coming for this new Ocean Yachts 64 Makaira, to be exact six years from the start of the concept down in New Jersey. Now Ocean has finally launched its first Makaira, what is to be at 64 feet the second size in the current Ocean Yachts line up between the 73 and 58 Super Sport models. Ocean Yachts 64 Makaira brings a breed of fresh air to the Sportfishing yacht sector thanks to a very aggressive super structure design as outlined by renowned custom sportfish designer Steve French from Applied Concepts Unleashed. It is indeed a whole different looks both inside and outside where modernity and curves are shown as never they have been on a sportfish boat. The 64 Makaira also surprises for its layout in this size offering three double guest cabins which include an owners stateroom at midships. The other two rooms will be a VIP to fore, and the third L-shaped bunk twin berth to port side. A two crew cabin with seperate entrance is also located at midships in between the cabins and engine room. The 64 Makaira will also have the option to be offered with in an enclosed bridge option. Performance wise back in construction stages Ocean Yachts and Applied Concepts made a lot of study for saving weight and give the 64 Makaira an edge in performance, and the result is a dry weight of just over 34 tons. Power is twin Cat engines of 1925hp.

Ocean Yachts finally debuts its new 37 Express a new open sportfish cruiser type built using the popular and proven hull of the Billfish model. The new design includes a new cabin arrangement, an express helm deck with engine room access and mezzanine seating with storage in the cockpit. The cabin boasts upper and lower bunks, a sofa with rod storage, a well-equipped galley and a full head with enclosed shower. The 37 Express features a helmsman’s seat, companion seating, molded-in electronics boxes and “plug-and-play” lounge seating so customers who order have the ability to customize their layout. The cockpit features all the amenities you would expect to find in an offshore sport fisherman including a rigging station, tackle storage, bait freezer, large fish boxes and transom door. The 37’ Express is offered with hard top or full tower packages.  Power is from standard twin Yanmars 480hp or optional Cummins with the same horse, or more powerful 530 Yanmar's.  Speed numbers have not been announced but I do expect mid thirty numbers as Billfish model.

Project: Ocean Yachts 37 Express

Ocean Yachts present the project for the 37 Express which is scheduled to launch for the coming Summer. Based on a hull which comes from the well received Billfish model the 37 Express will be an open style sportfish cruiser. Her interior will be of an open plan layout, which feature a double berth to fore, dinette, galley, and separate shower head. A split level aft cockpit deck with the aft being a game fisherman place with central fighting chair, and above having helm and two L-shaped settees relaxation lounging area. A center console style helm is to be featured. Power is three engine choices of twin Yanmar or Cummins from 480 up to 530hp. Interestingly pod drives are not offered as option, although this choice is available as optional for the Billfish. www.oceanyachtsinc.com

Project: Ocean Yachts 64 Makaira

Makaira is the Latin name for the Marlin fish, and this is how New Jersey boat builder Ocean Yachts names its new innovative Sportfish Yacht to fill the void between its 58 and 73 Super Sport models. A void left empty since the stop production of the 62 Super Sport a couple of years ago. Ocean Yachts has been one of the most successful builders of Sportfish cruisers and yachts thanks to a luxury interior which also gives the ladies a consensus on the choice of there mates. Designed by Applied Concepts Unleashed from Florida renowned for there work with most custom Sportfish Yachts names, the 64 Makaira by Ocean Yachts creates a new brand and wants to hit revolution in this size offering speeds close to the 50 knot mark, light weight but strong construction to challenge the cold molding method, and a superior eight berth four stateroom accommodation. The 64 Makaira shows also a lower windshield design! Will it be real or not? If real Ocean Yachts will be the second major US builder to take this route, although it did not present a wrap around concept as Bertram did, but went for an integrated look. Construction for the 64 Makaira is also different to the other Ocean Yachts models building its new branded Sportfish in a vacuum infused fully cored hull with Corecell, featuring also an infused stringer system which gives the desired finishing and strength. Ocean Yachts say this method will guarantee strength, and a huge saving in weight over the competition. Hull number one is nearly completed so now I think its up to see the new Ocean Yachts 64 Makaira for real, with an official presentation most probably taking place at the Miami show in February.

Improve-it = Ocean Yachts 37 Bill Fish

Ocean Yachts improves its 37 Bill Fish after two years since its introduction. Much appreciated since introduced in 2007 for its classic looks representing sportfish boats of days gone by, this smart sportfish cruiser entry level of the Ocean Yachts range gets added with a new Volvo IPS propulsion engine option. Following recent trends, the much acclaimed 37 Bill Fish now is available with twin Volvo IPS600 435hp each engines. This option replace the shafts, rudders and propeller pockets of the original version with Volvo's forward looking IPS pod drives, and with this adds the easy to use joystick too. Easy to say that the 37 Bill Fish looks classic outside but is all modern schematics inside, from the finishing touches of the cabin, engines, and to the control stations of both helms.

Boat Review: Ocean Yachts 37 Billfish

Presentation
Ocean Yachts 37 Billfish, is a stunning looking boat, presented by this 31 year old builder, last February during the Miami boat show. The new small Ocean revives the sixties when day sport fishers where common sight in any marina around the globe, coming from now famous legendary boat builders who created a myth in that era, which lives as at today. The 37 Billfish is revolved to those enthusiasts who want a classic looking sport fisher with amenities of the new millennium, such as modern diesel engines, luxury interiors, and the improving ride of modern hull shapes. The thinking is also that the new small Ocean Yacht is also an interesting sportfish cruiser for those owners wanting a classic, but have no time in refitting an old boat to there liking.
Accommodation
As rugged and minimal as it may look the 37 Bill Fish has a luxurious finished satin cherry wood lower deck, offering a comfortably spacious three berth two plus one forward cabin, a nice l-shaped galley and a head with enclosing shower stall. Ocean Yachts also offer an option B layout here, with the change in the forward cabin, in this case featuring a more luxurious double island berth.
The main deck of the 37 Bill Fish is what would you expect from a sport fisher with a free roomy aft cockpit for the fisherman, but also easy to organise a set of chairs and table to make this a nice entertaining area. Move more to fore, and you have to port a 6 person c-shaped dinette, a settee opposite, and to starboard we have the lower helm station. The fly for an 11 metre sport fisher also offers more then the usual comfort with a central single seated helm station, and 2 person settees on each side.
Performance
As most US built Sport fishers, the 37 Billfish has it all, good top end speed of 35 knots, and comfortable cruising of 30 knots with the smaller engine option of twin 480hp highly efficient Yanmar engines, propelled with stable shaft drives in propeller pockets. For that extra knot Ocean also offers a more powerful twin Cat C9 510hp option. Hull shape is a geometrical vee, with a deep forward entry of 32 degrees going to a moderate 12 degrees aft, for more stable low speed trawling. Last minute news also says the 37 Billfish to be also available with a Pod drive propulsion in the near future. We wait for more information about this.
Positive
Spacious Main Deck
2 layout option
Negative
Side Decks fore to aft movement
Competition
Ocean Yachts 37 Billfish is a unique affair and real competition is hard to come by. If you are looking for a Sport Fisher with classic looks and dual helm station, but an open cockpit no patio door main deck, it is your only relevant choice. Similar in concept but slightly bigger in size is the San Juan 40 FB, but in this case more of a traditional cruiser lobster design.
San Juan 40 FB - slightly bigger, lobster tradition design, similar layout
WILD CARD: Bertram 360 - entry level legend, no fly but tuna tower option gives 2nd helm
Conclusion
Ocean Yachts have been clever when they embarked in the project of the 37 Billfish, finding a niche in the market for a classic looking boat, with a unique flair. You can buy the 37 Billfish definitely to go fishing, which is its main job, but you can also purchase it as a classic looking boat with plenty of thoughtful features in its design, performance, great sea keeping and none the less the outstanding rugged good looks.
