Engine: Man V12X 2200hp

Man will present its new V12X engine series to a global audience at the Cannes 2022 boat show. With the newly developed V12 engine for yacht applications, Man Engines is for the first time offering its customers an output of 2200hp from 30 liters of displacement. The Man V12X achieves its output of 2200hp at 2300 rpm from a bore of 138 mm and a stroke of 165 mm. Compared with the previous most powerful yacht engine from Man, V12 2000hp the displacement of the V12X has been increased by more than five liters and the maximum torque from 6500 Nm to 7350 Nm. The MAN V12X is based on a completely new basic engine, incorporating many findings from the current V12 engine series, which continues to cover yacht outputs of up to 2000hp. As part of the new development of the next-generation yacht engine, the engineers at MAN Engines enlarged the bore of the MAN V12X to 138 mm and the stroke to 165 mm. Among other things, the wall thicknesses of the crankcase have been increased at significant points, its bolt connection between the upper and lower parts of the case has been optimized and a new crankshaft with larger bearing diameters has been installed. A great deal of attention is also paid to the findings from numerous test bench trials with correspondingly long running times and the experience gained from trials at customers on the water. In addition, findings from the E3872 stationary gas engine developed in parallel complement the development. This counterpart for power and heat generation is based on the same basic engine and was presented for the first time back at the end of 2021. The evolution to the next generation of yacht engines is reflected in the numerous further developments that the Man V12X features, which on the one hand are due to the significantly higher output, but on the other also play a major role in ensuring the durability of the product. For this reason, the Man V12X in the highest output for yachts is designed for a full-load share of up to 20%. A new coolant pump and a new thermostat housing provide the Man V12X with an optimized coolant supply for the usual long service life of the engine. The engine is also optionally available with an outer-skin cooling system instead of the closed coolant circuit. The new, distinctive cylinder head of the V12X, which has also been significantly optimized in terms of flow and cooling, is designed to meet the same development goal. In addition, the oil supply has also been modified by using new oil pumps and new oil coolers, as well as optimizing the flow. As an additional customer benefit, the V12X is the first marine engine using Man recently introduced Hydraulic Valve Lash adjustment as standard on marine engines for the first time, which eliminates the need for regularly checking and adjusting the valve lash. The new Common Rail injection system is another milestone that represents the excellence of this next generation of engines. With an impressive 2200 bar injection pressure, the basis is created for the low fuel consumptions and outstanding raw emissions typical of Man engines. The engine control unit is also new and opens up further possibilities for optimal engine design. In conjunction with the exhaust gas aftertreatment system, which has also been adapted, strict legal requirements such as IMO Tier III are met. The Man V12X is also available in combination with the hybrid system from MAN Engines, the "MAN Smart HYBRID Experience". The compact installation dimensions is almost identical to those of the Man V12 series with 24 litres, an advantage for new builds as well as for re-engine projects. Despite numerous measures to ensure the robustness of the new engine, the Man V12X with its 2720kg dry weight is positioned as a lightweight in the field of twelve and sixteen cylinder yacht engines over 2000hp, giving 0.81hp per kilogram of dry weight or 74.3 hp (54.6 kW) per liter of displacement. The V12X engine will be available from mid-2024.

Engine: MAN Smart Hybrid

MAN Engines present its Smart Hybrid Experience. This completely new hybrid system marks a turning point when it comes to modern marine drives, and underlines MAN Engines’ status as pioneers in this technology. The electric motor generator unit from the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience can produce a rated power of 184 kW or 368 kW, at an extremely high efficiency rating of up to 96 percent. The permanent-magnet synchronous motor/generator is 160 mm long at 184 kW, or 320 mm at 368 kW. Its diameter is 560 mm. It is positioned on the diesel engine in front of the marine drive and can be separated from the diesel engine by an electromagnetic clutch. This results in a clear advantage for the customer, in that the operating mode can be changed without stopping the engines. In fact, this changeover can be made during operation (including as an emergency function) without interrupting the power, making operation much more convenient. The MAN Smart Hybrid Experience can be combined with all the Man marine engines in the current line from 730hp to 2000hp series, and allows for enhanced power outputs. This enables overall system outputs for each driveline ranging from 474 kW to 1,838 kW (644hp to 2,500hp), from the smallest in-line six-cylinder series to the most powerful V12. Depending on how the components are assembled, the hybrid system can thus account for up to 56 percent of the vehicle’s overall power output. With the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience, MAN Engines is the first engine supplier to offer a complete hybrid system from a single source. MAN Engines supervises shipyards and boat designers from the planning and concept phase through development, consultation on installation and technical implementation including control software, to service and maintenance. This means that B2B partners benefit from more than just intensive consultation and simplified processes throughout all stages. An additional point in MAN Engines’ favour as a system supplier is the perfect coordination of complex components such as diesel engines and electric motors, batteries, power electronics and the on-board voltage system, both with one another and with the application itself. Maximum flexibility and attention to the customer’s needs that is the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience’s motto. Alongside power levels that can be scaled to almost any level thanks to the wide range of diesel engines, the degree of hybrid power can be tailored to the customer and expressed in the system design principles of performance, comfort and efficiency. To achieve this, MAN Engines makes use of a wide range of technically mature series components. All the possible drive configurations such as V-Drive, IV-Drive, parallel drives and down angle can also be connected to the MAN Smart Hybrid Experience. The performance, efficiency and comfort system design principles are tailored to specific applications on the basis of the Zero Emission, Diesel-Electric, Cross-Over, Hotel, Boost and Diesel operating modes. With the main diesel engines, on-board generator sets, high-voltage (HV) batteries and a land connection as power sources, the advantages of the MAN hybrid system (combined or in isolation) can be exploited in a targeted way. This enables, for example, highly economical operation, an increase in range, access to Emission Controlled Areas thanks to emission-free operation, or additional power as a power boost. In hotel mode, the battery capacity can also be used when the boat is docked. The plug-in hybrid’s HV battery is charged via the integrated land connection, and through the diesel engines or on-board generator sets when the boat is on the move. For its MAN Smart Hybrid Experience, MAN Engines uses battery systems from different manufacturers for specific applications, which are connected in series in modules. As high-energy cells, they are designed with a high energy density at a voltage > 600 V, enabling flexible battery operation between 500 V and 750 V in the intermediate circuit. This enables quick charging of the batteries, and provides the basis for major energy consumers such as the boost function. At the same time, the highest safety standards are guaranteed as the drive system has been approved by classification societies.

Engine: Man V12 2000hp

At the 2018 Cannes boat show, MAN Engines debuted the new V12-2000, which is the only twelve-cylinder V-engine with 2000hp to date, which generates enormous power from 24 litres of displacement.  The V12-2000 engine impresses with extremely high power densities of 61kw per litre of displacement. The minimal space requirement and low weight spell out a clear advantage in terms of ship design, when compared to similarly powerful engines with larger displacement and more cylinders. This is because the installation dimensions of the V12-1900 have been retained, as they were already compact. These dimensions are 2,159 x 1,153 x 1,272 mm and a dry weight of 2380kg has also remained the same; through a power increase of the engines, this also contributes to a noticeably lower power/weight ratio of 1.62 kg/kW.  Through a series of modifications, MAN engineers have managed a power increase of 100hp respectively, compared to the previously most powerful V12 engine from their range. The performance-oriented design is supported by an improved injection system and new turbo charger. This is aided by newly developed cylinder heads and an adjusted cooling system which noticeably provides thermal relief for the engine with its high performance. Additionally, a new crankcase which has been reinforced in significant areas, ensures high performance throughout the entirety of the engine’s long service life. Highly efficient combustion allows the V12-2000 to run quietly, as is typical for MAN Engines, and with low fuel consumption.  The V12-2000 offers customers the most powerful engine above the V12-1900, the previously most powerful engine, from the MAN engines range. The superior engine performance allows shipyards to access additional possibilities for equipping larger ship series of around 100 feet with MAN engines.

MAN presents its latest generation of six-cylinder engine designed to be used in yachts and trawlers up to seventeen meters in length, as well as in sport fishing boats. The basic six-cylinder engine has been tried and tested many hundreds of thousands of times in a wide range of on and off-road machinery since it was first introduced in 2007. Modified especially for the use in pleasure craft, the six-cylinder in-line engine 730hp i6-730 has a cylinder capacity of 12.4 l available for light duty operations. The future-proof i6-730 yacht engine is based on the D2676 model, also have a modern common rail system offering up to 1800 bar for high mean pressures and optimized combustion. This enables MAN engineers to achieve lower vibrations and noise emissions along with reduced fuel consumption. To ensure compliance with strict emissions legislation, MAN shares information and data on a regular basis with institutions including the US Environmental Protection Agency and the International Maritime Organization. The new yacht engine also offer the broad torque plateau that is characteristic for MAN marine engines generating 2450 Nm at between 1200 and 2100 rpm. This provides maximum torque over a broad engine speed range at the lowest specific fuel consumption, achieving consistent acceleration and a fast and efficient planing. MAN’s design engineers came up with an optional design cover for the six-cylinder engine, ensuring to fulfill the criteria of elegance and high performance. The sophisticated and timeless design of the perfectly shaped engine stays within the style of modern luxury yachts. For naval architects the new six-cylinder inline engines come in MAN’s typically compact 1800 x 922 x 1103 mm design and have an even more streamlined oil pan design. With a dry weight of 1200 kg, the new generation of engines also has an improved power to weight ratio. The the MAN marine diesel engines i6-730 is based on the D2676 and is set to replace the predecessor model R6-730 based on the D2876 in the medium term.

Engine: MAN V12 1900hp

MAN engines showcase their most powerful high-speed four-stroke diesel engine to date with the twelve-cylinder V engine with 1900hp bearing the distinctive name V12-1900 and was specifically designed for use in luxury yachts of over 100 feet. The complete redesign of the injection, power train and cooling system has allowed MAN to achieve an increase in output of 100hp compared to the established V12-1800. With installation dimensions of 2,139 mm x 1,153 mm x 1,265 mm; length x width x height, the V12-1900 comes in the MAN Engines customary compact size. At 2365kg dry weight and as a result of the increase in output to 1900hp, the most powerful series engine from MAN Truck & Bus has an outstanding power to weight ratio with a high power density and compact installation dimensions. This therefore gives architects and boat builders significant room in terms of design. A maximum torque of 6,220 Nm, at 1,200 to 2,100 rpm, makes the V12-1900 the most powerful engine to date in the MAN Engines portfolio, thus delivering ample output reserves for overtaking fun when piloting luxury yachts. The high-performance unit generates its power from 24.2 litre displacement ensuring high power development even at the lower end and right across a broad speed range. The even and constant acceleration delivers a pleasant and comfortable ride right through to the upper end of the speed range. The special design ensures very smooth running and thus provides a relaxed ride, adding to the comfort on board. At its optimum, the specific fuel consumption of the V12-1900 is at the same low level of 190 g/kWh as its heavier sister model, the V12-1800. The V12-1900 is MAN's response to the issue of increased performance for both planning and displacement hulls.

Engine: MAN D2868 LE421 600hp

In the D2868, MAN is offering the first eight-cylinder engine with common-rail technology for medium and heavy-duty operation. Thanks to the use of the latest common-rail technology, with its own internal measures the high-speed engine complies with the most important exhaust-gas standards worldwide. Moreover, this efficient diesel engine from MAN offers further improved fuel consumption with even lower noise emissions. Its full classification by the major societies expands the range of operating options that ship owners and captains have. The first product variant, the D2868 LE423 for light-duty operation, has already established itself on the market.  In heavy-duty operation, the efficient MAN D2868 LE421 marine diesel engine for applications requiring up to 100 percent full load over unlimited periods of time outputs 600hp at 1800 rpm. With the D2868 LE421, MAN has expanded its range of new-generation high-speed diesel engines towards the lower end of the power output spectrum and is thus able to offer attractive solutions particularly for applications in this part of the range. Engine: MAN V12 1650hp

MAN  presented its new  V12-1650hp marine engine for yachts and pleasure craft in the 50 to 100-foot class. With its 12 cylinders and 1,650hp or 1213kW it closes the gap in the upper power segment between the V12 rated at 1550hp and the top-rated 12-cylinder unit with 1800hp. At only 2400 kg the low weight of the V12-1650 ensures an excellent weight-to-power ratio of 1.45 kg per hp and thus maximum efficiency in marine operation. The V12-1650 is the ideal engine for yacht owners who are looking to cruise in comfort and above all to cover longer distances overnight. The reason for this is its maximum torque of 5,520 Nm, which is available at speeds even as low as 1,200 rpm. MAN yacht engines are also well known for their compact dimensions and thus give architects and boat-builders a good deal of room for manoeuvre. The V12-1650 merges well into the array of space-saving engines and features convincingly compact dimensions of 1,667 x 1,150 x 1,350 mm (length x width x height). MAN's engineers have achieved this by, among other things, using a weight and space-saving SAE1 flywheel housing. One advantage for installation of the engine at the boat-builders is the exhaust system, which has one central outlet. The water pump is driven by a gear instead of a V-belt, which considerably reduces the maintenance effort. Beside this all parts requiring servicing, such as fuel and oil filters, are so efficiently positioned in the V12-1650 that they are easily accessible from the centre gangway.

Engine: MAN V8 1200hp

MAN Engines & Components presents the new V8-1200 for yachts and pleasure craft in the 50 to 60 foot class. At the 40th boot in Düsseldorf the 1200hp diesel engine (882 kW) made its first public appearance. The appearance of the V8-1200 marks a logical addition to the selection of V-engines from the Engines & Components division of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG. With its 1200hp (882 kW) the 8-cylinder offers superb acceleration for yachts and pleasure craft in the 50 to 60 foot class. Maximum torque of 4000 Nm at as low as 1200 rpm sends a yacht into the planing phase fast, achieving high speeds in next to no time. Optimal design of the dynamic V8 engine enables it to maintain 1200 hp (882 kW) performance from 2100 through 2350 rpm. Here MAN engineers have demonstrated in unequalled fashion that a powerful engine can be both lightweight and compact. At 1.56 kilograms per horsepower, the new V8-1200 is even lighter in relation to power than existing MAN V-engines for virtually unaltered dimensions. Engines come with an SAE1 flywheel case to save space and weight. Cooling is by a plate heat exchanger, which allows flexible configuration of the cooling system. An advantage in engine installation by a boat builder is the modified exhaust system with a central gas outlet. All parts needing maintenance such as fuel and oil filters are arranged for ease of access. The water pump is driven by a gear instead of a belt.

Engine: MAN V12 1800hp

The new V12-1800 MAN Nutzfahrzeuge presents a genuine power package of a top performing diesel in its ­engine range generating a maximum torque of 6020 Nm even at 1200 rpm and accelerating at an impressive pace. The 12-cylinder brings yachts into the planing phase fast, achieving high speeds in next to no time. Common Rail direct injection enables fuel injection at very high pressure, producing optimally smooth running and the pleasant ride comfort of this V12. Two-stage ­turbocharging­ also features in the engine's technology. Compactly scaled at 2087 x 1153 x 1275 mm (L x W x H without gearbox), the V12-1800 leaves designers plenty of freedom and flexibility when planning their yachts. Weight is another advantage, in relation to performance the 12-cylinder at just 2365 kg weighs in at 1.31 kg per unit of horsepower. To achieve features like these, MAN's engineers further developed the V-series throughout, optimising engine components in the process. Cooling of the new V12 is by a plate heat exchanger, which allows flexible configuration of the cooling system. In addition to this the V12 comes with a space-saving and low-weight SAE1 flywheel housing. An advantage for engine installation by a boat builder is the modified exhaust system with a central gas outlet. All parts needing maintenance such as fuel and oil filters are arranged for ease of access. And the water pump is driven by a gear instead of a belt. Turning to the engine proper, here too the designers have made interesting modifications. The V12-1800 generates a constant 1800 hp (1324 kW) between 2100 and 2350 rpm. The use of extremely high-strength materials, such as steel pistons, permits gas pressures up to 240 bar and ignition pressures up to 1600 bar. Here a bedplate concept is implemented in a yacht engine for the first time to create the extra strength. This bedplate replaces the single bearing caps of the crankshaft, and plays a major part in reinforcing the crank case and minimising noise emission. Second-generation Common Rail injection plus an optimally conceived combustion process mean high performance together with exemplary emission figures. The V12-1800 naturally complies with current international exhaust directives.
