Project: Cranchi XT36

After the announcement in 2016, the evolution of Cranchi and designer Christian Grande, is fully underlined by the new model that will debut in the 2017 season, the project of the XT36.  This new Cranchi stands out for its concept, an innovative design that the Italian boat builder says it deserves its own category. The XT36 combines the rationality of a trawler and the thrill of a sports-cruiser. A boat with lively performance and a comfortable experience that will amaze, considering a length of under ten meters.  On the main deck, the large area under the hard top is totally sheltered by a windscreen that offers comfort and protection, without any barriers to natural light and visibility. A sliding glass door closes this area making it pleasant to stay on board at any latitude, in hot and humid climates or in the colder winter months. Even with the door closed, there is a sense of continuity with the outdoor area; this sensation is emphasized when the doors are opened, creating a single spacious living area. The cockpit area, both inside and outside, develops on one level without any steps: everything with the XT36 confirms the idea of an immediate, easy and direct relationship with the sea.  The design of the exterior prefers prominent lines, both forward and aft, to extend the living spaces and give more dynamism and momentum.  In the cockpit there is a comfortable seat and along with a grill and a sink set into a furniture unit. Access to the swimming platform, generous in size, is very easy, as it is to safely move around, with a free obstacle passageway that runs around the entire perimeter of the boat. In the forward section there is the main sunbathing area, plus another one on the hard top, which can be used when the boat is moored. The covered cockpit area houses, in addition to the pilothouse, a lounge with a convertible sofa, and a kitchen.  On the lower deck, all the space is dedicated to the sleeping area, with truly astonishing solutions for a boat of this size. The XT36 will be available in two alternative layouts: with two cabins and two bathrooms, or three cabins and one bathroom.  This last option remarkable for a cruiser measuring just ten meters in length.

Engine: FNM 20 HPE 175hp

FNM 20HPE is a four cylinder engine based on the platform Family B GM, which equips a large number of small and medium cars in Europe. The engine uses a common-rail injection system electronically controlled by a proprietary control unit, configured specifically for this engine. The engine is compact and powerful, and its widespread use is a symbol of reliability and availability of spare parts.  Whether it is rated for recreational use, where the engine reaches up to 175hp, or to one of the rating for commercial use, where this engine is capable of performing up to 3000 hours per year, this unit provides performance in every operating condition.  The electronic control unit (ECU) is the result of a development lasted ten years by the electronic department of CMD and is expressly designed for marine application of HPE engines. The control unit controls the components of the Bosch common rail system. The ECU also includes unique control strategies, such as flame failure in gear engagement situations for high inertia installations or rapid gear changes, and in any case ensures high performance in emission limits.

New Model: Feadship 34.65m

Behind every Feadship is a great story and the recently launched all-aluminium 34.65 meter named M/Y CID is no exception. This plumb-bowed super yacht has been created for a gentleman who enjoys spending time on the water with his friends, many of whom also own motor yachts. The challenge was that their South American playground includes smaller bays and marinas that are out of bounds to larger Feadships, so the best solution was to have one built in a 35-metre size. It’s been a great experience for him and everyone involved in the build.  This new Feadship 34.65 meter was launched in the presence of the client, one of the many times he visited the yard in Aalsmeer. The launch party included a maiden tour of the local Dutch canals, and the client even took part in two days of sea trials in the North Sea and around the Wadden islands. This new Feadship will now spend a month in the Med before being transported to Acapulco where she’ll reconnect on Mexico’s west coast and the Baja California Peninsula. Her excellent sea keeping and top speed of 20 knots will allow swift movement between the various new adventures.  This cool and contemporary Feadship is a true marriage of function and form. Take the giant windows, as you can see, these huge slabs of glass look spectacular in the profile but they also mean that all on board get to view their surroundings in the best possible way. Because the client loves driving his boat, Feadship also placed a fixed bimini on the flybridge to give shade to the helm there.  The top deck is also the largest in length ratio seen on a Feadship and with its giant table, sun lounger areas and large pop-out TV will be the social hub.  The interior of the Feadship 35.65 meter is geared to a practical social use within a sophisticated jacket. Wooden floors are fitted throughout the main deck, there’s a giant TV and big screen projector in the main lounge so guests can watch two sports events simultaneously, and all the crockery is made from melamine for extra resilience. Fully custom build Feadship 34.65 meters was made for fun and social events.

New Model: Baglietto MV19

Baglietto launched the MV19 named M/Y Ridoc on Saturday June tenth in a ceremony attended by the owner and his friends. Fully custom build MV19 is one of the most original sport yacht designs not only from the Italian Baglietto and Francesco Paszkowski but in the World of yachting.  At 19.50 meters in length MV19 represents the natural evolution of the MV13 both in terms of the exterior lines and the interiors. The Baglietto technical office is responsible for the hull, plant and propulsion designs. The MV series draws its inspiration from the First and Second World War MAS, torpedo armed boats, which Baglietto built in that period as commissioned by the Italian government of the time and is part of the history of the Liguria-based brand.  So in simple words who better to reinterpret the peculiar MAS features and shapes in a modern style, matching them with architectural elements adapted to an open sport yacht, then someone who build them himself in that period. MV19 hull one features a metallic dark grey color which enhances the aggressive lines of the boat giving her a look of strength and power. The interior design, created in cooperation with architect Margherita Casprini, focuses on exploration of materials and finishes to combine a retro allure with contemporary comfort demands. Also, the most up-dated audio-visual systems with satellite TV are included on board: a feature which is unusual in boat of this size. The upholstery is in Canaletto nut together with white lacquered walls while all the floors are in dark oak. The result is a beautifully accessorized boat that still has a powerfully decisive character consistent with the sporty look of the exterior. The layout of the first MV19 presents the master cabin forward and two guests cabins with ensuite bathroom amidships. In between is a spacious open dinette with comfortable sofas and a fully equipped galley. According to following the owner wishes, a crew cabin for the captain with direct access from the exterior has been included. Outside the Baglietto MV19 offers a helm station to starboard, with behind it is a comfortable dinette with wet bar, while aft and on the fore deck are two large sun pad areas. The deep V-shaped keel along with aluminium construction allow the MV19 high performances and superb sea keeping as well as perfect maneuverability, which to be fair are typical trademarks of Baglietto. Powered by twin Man 1800hp engines Baglietto MV19 reaches a maximum speed of forty knots. After the summer cruising Baglietto MV19 will be presented worldwide at the upcoming 2017 Cannes boat show in early mid September.

Sam Newington - 2017

Sam Newington died peacefully at home, on 20th June 2017, surrounded by his family. Sam was a husband, a father, a grandfather, an entrepreneur, a fighter pilot, an intrepid navigator, a keen amateur historian, a wonderful present giver and unfailingly generous to family and friends.  Sam Newington managed Fairline, the company his father founded in 1963 from 1971 till 1996. Since taking over Fariline, Sam took the Oundle based firm to new heights first by working with John Bennett for over decade who designed its most over sold model the 32 Phantom with 600 plus units delivered in a thirteen year production run, then again in the eighties by going the next step with designer Bernard Olesinski, and introducing the Targa in 1985 and Squadron in 1990.  Both Targa and Squadron series are today an important back bone of the Fairline name. Never knowingly seen without a glass of wine or a pint of bitter, he will be missed by many, most of all by Briony, his wife of 51 years. Sam Newington taught the value of hard work, humility and good table manners. Sam's funeral will be held at All Saints Church in Elton, at 4 pm, on 30th June 2017.

Project: Raffaelli 50 Compass Rose Evo

Raffaelli updates one of its most successful models of the past 2000 to 2010 decade, the 50 Compass Rose presenting the project for a new Evo version currently under construction in Pesaro, on the Adriatic coast of Italy.  The project for the 50 Compass Rose Evo is designed by Antonello Lucio Pontevolpe from Classyacht Design Studio, already a designer of three other successful Raffaelli models the Shamal, Calima, and Meltemi, and the 25 meter Thaitan which so far has never been released.  Antonello the Italian designer and company boss Giampiero Raffaelli decided to make soft make up touches keeping the line simple to that of a modern Italian yacht without going into useless design excesses.  Therefore if you are someone looking for endless window surfaces this is not the yacht for you.  The 50 Compass Rose Evo will also feature a technical change as it can be powered by Volvo IPS pod drives propulsion, or a shaft system.  Hull one of the Raffaelli 50 Compass Rose Evo will be powered by twin Volvo 550hp units with IPS700 pod drives, which should see interesting performance gains considering the previous larger engine shaft set up was that of twin Cats 510hp.

Project: Kadey-Krogen 50 Open

Kadey-Krogen reveals the latest model on their drawing board, the 50 Open.  A true departure from any previous Kadey-Krogen model the 50 Open breaks the mold with an open and continuous saloon/galley/pilothouse main deck.  Entering the Kadey-Krogen 50 Open happens through one of five, full walk-through boarding doors for easy access, no matter if high fixed piers, low fixed piers or floating docks are present. Upon entering the saloon of the Krogen 50 Open from the cockpit, it is obvious this is not a typical raised pilothouse offshore trawler. An L-shaped settee to port with storage below and additional seating starboard, enhanced by four large picture windows, make up the spacious saloon. Moving forward is the galley is outfitted with all latest applicances including a Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, ample pantry and cabinet storage, and pullout trash and recycle bins. Exclusive to the Kadey-Krogen 50 Open, the pilothouse, elevated by a single step, is situated on the main deck, immediately forward of the saloon and galley. A retractable partition wall, designed to separate the galley from the pilothouse, can be raised for night running or privacy.  Below, the master stateroom and guest accommodations are available in either a midship master with VIP cabin forward, or a master-forward, three-cabin arrangement. Either layout can be customized to meet an owner’s desires, and both options have a master suite that entails a maximum-comfort queen island berth with drawer storage below, a private head and roomy his/her closets. Each design is also appointed with a guest head and luxurious washer and dryer closet. Also below, the stand-up engine room with an incredible six and a half feet of head room, houses either single or twin engines and the industry’s finest systems and equipment.  Out of doors, the Krogen 50’ Open is designed with a Portuguese bridge, port and starboard wing stations, and an uncluttered foredeck with waist-high bow railings. Additionally, she has an unprecedented flybridge modeled after the 58 EB entertaining area and large boat deck. The flybridge is available with an optional hardtop and summer kitchen.

Web: Tiara New Web Site

Tiara Yachts from the US of America presents a new global web showroom. Tiara yachts is the motor boat division of S2 which was founded in 1974 by Leon Slickers who came from a previous boat building experience which started in 1946 as a joinery maker with Chris Craft. This continued in 1950 first building 14 foot runabouts in his garage after work, and later on registering the Slickcraft name in 1954. This move made Slickers a year later to abandon his successful career with Chris Craft, sell his house and open a factory in Michigan. In the same year Slickers started experimenting with fiberglass and within three years Slickcraft had already produced a few boats with a switch to total production with the new material in 1963. In 1969 Leon sold to AMF, and was left to head three other AMF companies including Slickcraft. But after four years Slickers noticed that corporation business was not his way, and left the company. In 1974 Leon Slickers founded S2 Yachts first building sailboats, which in ten years time will become one of the top five builders in the US. A few years later to the founding of S2 a new motorboat series called Tiara is added. This will be joined by a second factory in 1977 at Florida building the Pursuit brand, and six years later to this Slickers purchases back again his Slickcraft from AMF. Today Tiara is a quality renowned cruiser and yacht builder with an offer which consists of thirteen models from 31 to 53 feet divided into a five range series; Q, Tiara, Convertible, Flybridge, and Coupe series. The line up starts with the 31, and goes up to the C53 Coupe flagship, with latest model being the F53 Flybridge.  Currently Tiara has also a project for a 36 LS which marks the return to an outboard powered model from Tiara. Tiara new website is available in nearly all languages and takes you around with the following buttons; Yachts, Tiara Soul, Tiara World, Find a Dealer, Tiara Collection, Tiara Events, and Connect. Tiara is also on social media with a link to its Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram, and Vimeo pages located at the bottom of the page.

New Model: Fraucher 1414 Demon

Considering that Fraucher has been around for ninety years it is interesting to note that its maximum size for a sport boat slash cruiser is of just over thirteen meters reached with this new 1414 Demon flagship. This in my opinion shows the focus this Austrian boat builder has had in building small size but luxury outfitted sport boats. This new Fraucher 1414 Demon follows the minimal styling which this builder has been following the past years.  Looking very aggressive outside the 1414 Demon offers interesting accommodation outside and interestingly inside. Outside offers a large aft sun-pad, C-shaped dinette, and a central console, and inside; spacious midships owners cabins, rather spacious galley, shower head, and a U-shaped dinette which can become an additional double berth.  The Fraucher 1414 Demon is standard powered by twin Volvo diesel 400hp with stern drive propulsion, with a higher performing 520hp fuel gas option being available.

Project: Tecnorib Pirelli 1900

Tecnorib has unveiled project details for a new Pirelli 1900, the flagship that completes the range of rigid inflatable boats.  Guests attending the most prestigious Formula One Grand Prix event in Montecarlo on Sunday May 28th, had the opportunity to view for the very first time a scale model in the exclusive Pirelli Suite at the Monaco Yacht Club. The audience of high-profile visitors attending were able to admire a scale model of the Tecnorib Pirelli 1900 for the first time showing the design features of much bigger yacht to the characteristic sportiness expressed by the range.  Tecnorib one of the leading companies in this sector and the licensee for Pirelli branded Ribs which was signed in 2005 has recently renewed the agreement, and will present the 1900 flagship at the next Cannes boat show. This new rib yacht draws on the legacy of previous models and benefits from the expertise, know-how and technology developed, but for the first time adds the live ability of a big yacht to their exquisitely sporty DNA.  The new Pirelli 1900 flagship completes Tecnorib’s now consolidated range of the branded ribs, which starting this year will have a unique and immediately recognizable design feature, with the tread pattern of the Pirelli wet tyre used by the brand in top track races appearing on the inflatable tubes, in a celebration of Pirelli’s expertise in the production of extremely wet conditions.  So far Tecnorib is being very quiet on technical and accommodation details for the Pirelli 1900 project, but expect fast performances coupled with a minimal accommodation layout.

Project: Sanlorezo SX88

Sanlorenzo outdone itself for the project launch of the SX88, with a social media marketing campaign giving hints of this new line starting in March 2017, confirmed by a press conference in Milan on 25 May. Sanlorenzo SX88 is a new cross-over type Super yacht design merging explorer and motor yacht styles coming from the hands of Mauro Micheli and Sergio Berretta of Officina Italiana design.  SX indeed means sport explorer.  Interiors for the SX88 are from Piero Lissoni and three different layouts will be available without moving any structural elements for this pocket size super yacht. Not much details are so far available on the interior, what we know is that the SX88 is available without an internal wheelhouse, and owners stateroom can be located on the main deck or at midships. The SX88 is to be launched in coming mid Summer and a further SX72 in 2018 and an SX104 in 2019 models will follow.  The Sanlorenzo SX88 had a test tanking done in Holland, with its hull reaching speeds up to 23 knots.  Engine and propulsion details are not advised by Sanlorenzo but the Viareggio Spezia builder said that this will be done in cooperation with Volvo.

Some boat show organizers and or stands seem to have a total wrong idea what a boating exhibition is about, making it not friendly for visitors to visit boats on show, or the show itself.  The question comes automatic, should this elitism in a boating exhibition open for everyone exist?
Case in point one is for the new Italian boat show Versilia in the Super Yacht capital of the Mediterranean Viareggio.  This was a very interesting first event, attended by some of Italy's most popular names as Azimut-Benetti, Ferretti Group, the Gavio Group and his Baglietto, Cerri and Bertram brands, Apreamare, and the British Princess.  The location was spot on and since the late eighties I have always asked why the Viareggio boat show project was abandoned.  But on social media the event was clouded by a bad publicity of elitism and for a 22 EURO ticket which did not allow a re-entry once you left the interesting but so far small boat show.
Point case two, Fairline and its impossible to view boats on show.  Now this has been going on for years and even after ownership and management changes at the British builder it does not know how to stop. It seems that unless you have some connection with any of the Fairline staff visiting one of there boats on a show is very hard.  I do not know the reason for this but at this stage the legit question is why Fairline bothers with boat shows.

CRN Art on Display

CRN, the Italian shipbuilder and brand, part of the Ferretti Group, specialising in the construction of fully-custom steel and aluminium pleasure vessels between 40 and 100 metres in length, will be among the leading brands in the spotlight at the Montenapoleone Yacht Club, to be held from 15 to 21 May.  In this exclusive setting, CRN’s mastery of naval art finds its ideal partner in the world-class bespoke craftsmanship of Sutor Mantellassi, the Florence-based handmade shoes brand established in 1912 and largely appreciated over the years by outstanding figures like Gabriele D’Annunzio, Henry Fonda and Marcello Mastroianni.  These two brands share a fascinating history and a tailor-made approach that is common to both the fashion brand’s artisans, who create bespoke shoes for their clients, and CRN’s specialists, who know how to turn their Owners’ dreams and wishes into true masterpieces of international yachting. Each and every shoe by Sutor Mantellassi, which is made-to-measure and has a unique identity just like every yacht built by CRN, is an ambassador of the successful partnership established by the two brands, who both stand out for their accurate selection of raw materials, their product quality, and a painstaking care for the tiniest details.  Through their excellence, CRN and Sutor Mantellassi have contributed to writing important pages in the history of Made-in-Italy production. Indeed, both companies have made innovation the essence of their tradition and are recognised all over the world as real trend-setters in their respective sectors.  Their partnership will be celebrated even more prestigiously thanks to a tasting session by La Scolca, a centuries-old wine-making company that has produced fine wines for five generations.

Ferretti Receives Two Awards

Ferretti 450 was named the Best Motor Yacht below 55ft at the Asia Marine and Boating Awards in Shanghai and claimed the top prize in the Motor Yacht over 41 up to 50 feet category at the Adriatic Boat of the Year Awards in Portoroz.  The success of the Ferretti Yachts 450 goes on, as it continues to grow in popularity among owners and the general public all over the globe. The Ferretti Yachts 450 was presented to the sailing world at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016 and made its debut in the Asia Pacific region and the United States in recent months. Now it has claimed two awards in a single month, in China and Slovenia.  In Asia, where Ferretti Yachts has been the leading name in luxury sailing since years, the accolade came at the Asia Marine and Boating Awards, which took place in late April at the 22nd China International Boat Show 2017 in Shanghai.  The Ferretti Yachts 450 was named the Best Motor Yacht below 55ft. The judges praised the qualities that make the new boat unique: graceful style, practical design, unparalleled on-board comfort and a dynamically versatile interior layout.  Another triumph came just a few days later in Europe. At the start of Internautica 2017 which took place in early May in Marina Portoroz, Slovenia - the Ferretti Yachts 450 came first in the Motor Yacht over 41 up to 50 feet category at the Adriatic Boat of the Year Awards.  “The Ferretti Yachts 450 is a very important model for us because it marks the return of Ferretti Yachts to the strategic 40 to 50 feet market. It is popular with owners in our traditional markets, such as Europe and the Americas, and it has also been an instant hit in the Middle East and Asia,” stated Stefano de Vivo, Chief Commercial Officer of the Ferretti Group.  “These two awards from two different continents underline the international nature of Ferretti Yachts and the value of a distinctive, innovative design philosophy. We are very pleased with the prize that we won in Shanghai because it comes from an extremely selective market that appreciates the most exclusive products that are made in Italy. We are also enormously satisfied with the award that we picked up at Internautica, because it is the top boat show on the Adriatic, where enthusiasts from a number of countries have always spent boating holidays on the waves with flybridge models by Ferretti Yachts.”

Jarrett Bay Lands a Massive Blue Fin Tuna

Hailing from Grand Isle, LA, the Jarrett Bay 58, Whoo Dat spotted a large fish chasing bait on a recent fishing trip and Capt. Chris Mowad trolled to his spot. The fish crashed into the center rigger but missed the lure so Capt. Mowad swung back around for another shot. "He came up behind the center like a submarine pushing a wake. He came half out of the water and inhaled the lure," Keith Richardson explains. Keith's son Kaleb was in the fighting chair and battled it out for 45 minutes before the crew was able to gaff the giant bluefin and work him into the cockpit through the tuna door. The fish measured out to 113" in length with an 86" girth. Once at the scales, this massive bluefin weighed in at 835 pounds and is among the top five largest ever landed in the state of Louisiana. Incredible work by the entire Whoo Dat team and angler Kaleb Richardson!

In front of the helm stand is the large pantry and the long saloon table.  Behind the helm is the large cockpit and a fold-able bathing platform. For those who would really like to relax, there is a large sun-pad on the bow.  The two cabins are generously laid out with their own bathrooms. Future owners can choose between a separate shower or an additional large storage space in the bow. The Bavaria E34 offers aft a complete small suite.  For the E34 Bavaria will offer single engine power choices which start from 60hp, and have 110 and 220hp optional choices.  The Bavaria E34 is also available with the environmentally-friendly Diesel-Electric-Hybriddrive as an option.  An E 34 Fly flybridge version is also available.

Improve-It = Pershing 74

The Pershing 74 is a recent success and now for 2017 it too has been given a substantial improvement which mostly concerns the interior decor. The new key features are the updated shades and the new Alpi wood and lacquer details, which provide a common thread running through the different rooms, appearing in everything from curtains to mirror frames and bathroom cabinets. The sophisticated finishes and fine details can be seen in the lounge, furnished with a large, L-shaped corner sofa towards the stern, a central table with a smooth leather top and a structural unit with a retractable flat screen TV. Ceilings and bulwarks are covered with Poltrona Frau leather in a light shade especially created to finish these decorative features. The leather on the helm station and seating is also made by Poltrona Frau. It marvelously complements the other finishes and the white oak flooring.  The galley is mid-level between the main deck and below deck. The units are coated with white gloss lacquer and once again there is a contrasting effect thanks to the dark Corian top.  The lower deck magnificently blends natural light with Led lighting, creating appealing effects that really bring out the ivory and dark grey hues of the interiors. In the full beam master suite, the paneling covered with Vescom wallpaper is masterfully broken up by “strips” of Led lighting. Two burnished mirrors make the space feel bigger and there is a king-size bed upholstered with Poltrona Frau leather, as well as two Artemide wall lights. Rounding off the furniture is a chaise lounge with textile upholstery by Zimmer + Rohde.  The style of the master suite is reproduced in both the fore VIP suite and the guest cabin, which comes with two parallel beds and can be fitted with a pull-man bed on request. They are all adorned with the same dark grey lacquer detailing, ceiling coverings, ice-colored bulwarks and Poltrona Frau leather upholstery. There are ivory carpets in all of the cabins. The basins in the bathrooms are made by Brera and the mixer taps by Ritmonio.  The Pershing 74 is equipped with twin MTU 1948hp which give a top speed of 44 knots and a cruising speed of 40 knots, while offering maximum comfort with the trim at all times.
